The three methods of determining the quasi‐static Mode I fracture toughness (KIc) (surface crack in flexure—SC, single‐edge precracked beam—PB, and chevron‐notched beam—VB) found in ASTM C1421 were applied to a variety of advanced ceramic materials. All three methods produced valid and comparable KIc values for the Al2O3, SiC, Si3N4, and SiAlON ceramics examined. However, not all methods could successfully be applied to B4C, ZrO2, and WC ceramics due to a variety of material factors. The coarse‐grained microstructure of one B4C hindered the ability to observe and measure the precracks generated in the SC and PB methods while the transformation toughening in the ZrO2 prevented the formation of the SC and PB precracks and thus made it impossible to use either method on this ceramic. The high strength and elastic modulus of the WC made it impossible to achieve stable crack growth using the VB method because the specimen stored a tremendous amount of energy prior to fracture. Even though these methods have passed the rigors of the standardization process there are still some issues to be resolved when the methods are applied to certain classes of ceramics. It is recommended that, when appropriate, at least two of these methods be employed to determine the KIc, especially when a new or unfamiliar ceramic is being evaluated.  相似文献

Explosive properties of KClO4/Al-mixtures (60/40) were studied using 15 different types of Al powders. The explosions were photographed and the propagation speed was measured. The detonation and detonation isentrope properties of the mixtures were calculated and the results compared to the measured data. A condensed phase detonation was not detected but shock waves were most likely present in the gas phase. The results indicate that aluminium powder is not able to sustain detonation at all. Additionally, powder with a surface area less than 5 m2/g will not even deflagrate reliably as a mixture with potassium perchlorate.  相似文献

Thanks to their high energy density and thermal conductivity, metallic Phase Change Materials (mPCM) have shown great potential to improve the performance of thermal energy storage systems. However, the commercial application of mPCM is still limited due to their corrosion behavior with conventional container materials. This work first addresses on a fundamental level, whether carbon-based composite-ceramics are suitable for corrosion critical components in a thermal storage system. The compatibility between the mPCM AlSi12 and the Liquid Silicon Infiltration (LSI)-based carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide (C/C-SiC) composite is then investigated via contact angle measurements, microstructure analysis, and mechanical testing after exposure. The results reveal that the C/C-SiC composite maintains its mechanical properties and microstructure after exposure in the strongly corrosive mPCM. Based on these results, efforts were made to design and manufacture a container out of C/C-SiC for the housing of mPCM in vehicle application. The stability of the component filled with mPCM was proven nondestructively via computer tomography (CT). Successful thermal input- and output as well as thermal storage ability were demonstrated using a system calorimeter under conditions similar to the application. The investigated C/C-SiC composite has significant application potential as a structural material for thermal energy storage systems with mPCM.  相似文献

We investigated the etiology of decreased cone-driven vision in a light damage (LD) model of retinal degeneration. To induce slow, moderate degeneration, albino rats underwent low-intensity light exposure for 10 days. Electroretinography was utilized to assess physiologic function of the rod- and cone-driven retinal function in LD and control rats. Immunohistochemistry targeting cone arrestin allowed for quantification of cone density and for comparison of the decline in function. Photoreceptor loss was quantified by outer nuclear layer thickness decreases, as observed by optical coherence tomography and histology. The LD rats showed decreased rod- and cone-driven function with partial recovery 30 days after cessation of light exposure. In addition, LD rats showed decreased cone photoreceptor densities in the central retinal region compared to control rats. Our results demonstrate that the loss of cone-driven visual function induced by light damage is at least partially due to the death of cone photoreceptors.  相似文献

The Catalysis of the Co-Oxidation of cis-Oct-4-ene and n-Butyric Aldehyde The co-oxidation of cis-oct-4-ene and n-butyric aldehyde in the absence of catalysts, or in the presence of molybdenum and Co(acac)3, resp., was studied in dependence on the aldehyde/olefin ratio, on the temperature and other reaction conditions. Under the same conditions, the noncatalyzed co-oxidation converted 50%, the MoO2(acac)2-catalyzed one 68%, and the Co(acac)3-catalyzed one 40% of the reacted olefin into the epoxide. The cis/trans-epoxide ratio in the molybdenum-catalyzed co-oxidation was nearly 2 independent of the aldehyde/olefin ratio. In the non-catalyzed co-oxidation the cis/trans-epoxide ratio depends linearly on the aldehyde/olefin ratio (cis/trans E. = 0,58 + 0,90 n/n). From these dependences we can conclude that the homolytic mechanism of epoxide formation decreases and the polar mechanism (Priležaev-reaction) increases with increasing aldehyde/olefin ratio. Optimization of the epoxide yields according to a Box-Hunter experimental plan gave the following reaction conditions to yield 95% epoxide based on reacted olefin: 70°C, ΔnS/n = 0,49, n/n = 3,5 · 10−3, n/n = 0,53. The co-oxidation in the presence of other molybdenum catalysts of the chloro-nitrosyl-complex type and of the carbonyl-complex type as well as the co-oxidation with other aldehydes were studied, too.  相似文献

Amylomaltase-treated starch (ATS) is an excellent creaminess enhancer in yoghurt. Small amounts of ATS raised the creaminess perception of low-fat yoghurt (1.5%) to that of full-fat yoghurt (5%). In this way, a reduction in fat-related energy value could be achieved from 45 to 21.5 kcal/100 g product. The functionality of ATS in set yoghurt resulted from discrete domains of ATS that resemble the microstructural behaviour of fat particles. The microstructure of the yoghurt is dominated by the protein and the ATS domains are enclosed in or bound to this protein network. The perceived creaminess resulted from in-mouth melting of these ATS domains due to a combined effect of their physical melting and hydrolysis by amylase present in the saliva.  相似文献

A methodology that carries experimental uncertainties into model predictions is studied and applied to a multidimensional population balance model for granulation processes. This complex model contains 27 parameters. A portion of them such as material constants can be measured or estimated, whereas some of the model parameters need to be established through granulation experiments and subsequent fitting to the model. As uncertainties are associated with every measurement, these are used in the presented methodology for the computation of uncertainties in the model predictions. This allows one to assess the quality of a model and to identify outliers in the experimental observations. As the evaluation of the complex model framework is computationally expensive, the granulation process is approximated with response surfaces in the studied example, allowing the quick computation of the model response in the optimisation procedure. Using eight sets of experimental observations, model-specific rate constants for particle coalescence, compaction, breakage, and reaction are calculated. Additionally, uncertainties of these parameters are estimated, allowing for the calculation of the model prediction and its uncertainty. Whereas the a priori uncertainties are relatively large, the uncertainties are significantly reduced by the method proposed. In addition to this, a possible mismatch between the model and the experimental observations is identified, giving hints for further investigations.  相似文献

An extracorporeal bioartificial liver (BAL) device containing viable hepatocytes has the potential to provide temporary hepatic support to liver failure patients, serving as a bridge to transplantation while awaiting a suitable donor. In some patients, providing temporary hepatic support may be sufficient to allow adequate regeneration of the host liver, thereby eliminating the need for a liver transplant. Although the BAL device is a promising technology for the treatment of liver failure, there are several technical challenges that must be overcome in order to develop systems with sufficient processing capacity and of manageable size. In this study, the authors describe the critical issues involved in developing a BAL device. They also discuss their experiences in hepatocyte culture optimization within the context of a microchannel flat-plate BAL device.  相似文献
