Myriophyllum spicatum is known to inhibit the growth of cyanobacteria such as Microcystis aeruginosa by releasing anti-cyanobacterial allelochemicals. The allelochemicals possibly responsible for the inhibition include five polyphenols and three fatty acids, but the extent to which these are indeed responsible for the anti-cyanobacterial effects is unclear. The goal of this research was to determine the contribution of these compounds to the allelopathic effect of M. spicatum on M. aeruginosa. We first collected information on the release rates of these compounds and then added the compounds to a cyanobacterial medium on the basis of their release rates so as to simulate their excretion by M. spicatum. Addition of the polyphenols and fatty acids inhibited the growth of M. aeruginosa, and the interaction of the polyphenols and fatty acids was additive. The EC50 of a polyphenol and fatty acid mixture was compared with that of M. spicatum itself as previously determined in a mixed culture system in which M. spicatum and M. aeruginosa were incubated. The former was about 1.9 times higher than that of the latter, the implication being that the inhibitory effect of the polyphenols and fatty acids contributed about 53% of the allelopathic effect of M. spicatum. A single-chip H.264 and MPEG-4 audio-visual LSI for mobile applications including terrestrial digital broadcasting system (ISDB-T / DVB-H) with a module-wise, dynamic voltage/frequency scaling architecture is presented for the first time. This LSI can keep operating even during the voltage/frequency transition, so there is no performance overhead. It is realized through a dynamic deskewing system and an on-chip voltage regulator with slew rate control. By the combination with traditional low power techniques such as embedded DRAM and clock gating, it consumes only 63 mW in decoding QVGA H.264 video at 15 frames/sec and MPEG-4 AAC LC audio simultaneously. 相似文献

Plastic deformation is an unlikely process by which to mould pristine silicon wafers into three-dimensional shapes owing to the inevitable detrimental impact that the resulting mechanically induced defects would have on their electrical properties. However, if one were to find a way of doing so without substantial degradation of these properties, a range of new applications might be opened up. Here we report on the successful plastic deformation of silicon crystal wafers for the preparation of wafers with various shapes. A silicon wafer was set between dies and pressed at high temperatures. One application of shaped wafers is as well-shaped concave silicon crystal lenses or mirrors. The lattice plane of such a crystal lens has a curvature exactly along the surface. A concave spheroidal X-ray lens, in the form of two-dimensional Johann and Johansson's monochromators, is proposed for an X-ray optical component system. We propose and demonstrate a new solar cell system with the concave silicon crystal mirror used as both a solar cell and a focused mirror. Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) have greatly exceeded their initial role of graphics accelerators and have taken a new role of co-processors for computation—heavy tasks. Both hardware and software ecosystems have now matured, with fully IEEE compliant double precision and memory correction being supported and a rich set of software tools and libraries being available. This in turn has lead to their increased adoption in a growing number of fields, both in academia and, more recently, in industry. In this review we investigate the adoption of GPUs as accelerators in the field of Finite Element Structural Analysis, a design tool that is now essential in many branches of engineering. We survey the work that has been done in accelerating the most time consuming steps of the analysis, indicate the speedup that has been achieved and, where available, highlight software libraries and packages that will enable the reader to take advantage of such acceleration. Glycosphingolipids (GSLs) are composed of a mono-, di-, or oligosaccharide and a ceramide and function as constituents of cell membranes. Various molecular species of GSLs have been identified in mammalian cells due to differences in the structures of oligosaccharides. The oligosaccharide structure can vary depending on cell lineage, differentiation stage, and pathology; this property can be used as a cell identification marker. Furthermore, GSLs are involved in various aspects of the immune response, such as cytokine production, immune signaling, migration of immune cells, and antibody production. GSLs containing certain structures exhibit strong immunogenicity in immunized animals and promote the production of anti-GSL antibodies. By exploiting this property, it is possible to generate antibodies that recognize the fine oligosaccharide structure of specific GSLs or glycoproteins. In our study using artificially synthesized GSLs (artGSLs), we found that several structural features are correlated with the antibody-inducing activity of GSLs. Based on these findings, we designed artGSLs that efficiently induce the production of antibodies accompanied by class switching and developed several antibodies that recognize not only certain glycan structures of GSLs but also those of glycoproteins. Neurotrophic factors play key roles in the development and survival of neurons. The potent neuroprotective effects of neurotrophic factors, including brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF), suggest that they are good therapeutic candidates for neurodegenerative diseases. Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease of the eye that causes irreversible blindness. It is characterized by damage to the optic nerve, usually due to high intraocular pressure (IOP), and progressive degeneration of retinal neurons called retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Current therapy for glaucoma focuses on reduction of IOP, but neuroprotection may also be beneficial. BDNF is a powerful neuroprotective agent especially for RGCs. Exogenous application of BDNF to the retina and increased BDNF expression in retinal neurons using viral vector systems are both effective in protecting RGCs from damage. Furthermore, induction of BDNF expression by agents such as valproic acid has also been beneficial in promoting RGC survival. In this review, we discuss the therapeutic potential of neurotrophic factors in retinal diseases and focus on the differential roles of glial and neuronal TrkB in neuroprotection. Four benzoic acid derivatives and three phenylpropanoids were tested for their ability to suppress oxidation of dichlorodihydrofluorescein (DCDHF) induced by 3-morpholinosydnonimine (SIN-1, a peroxynitrite donor). Ellagic acid was found to potently inhibit this oxidation and to inhibit oxidation of DCDHF induced by peroxynitrite itself. Moreover, this compound prevented peroxynitrite-induced oxidative single strand breaks in pTZ 18U plasmid DNA and nitration of tyrosyl residues in bovine serum albumin. These results show that ellagic acid protects biomolecules against oxidative and nitrative damage induced by peroxynitrite in vitro. 相似文献

We developed a simple method for quantification of the peroxide value (PV) in colored lipids on the basis of the reaction
between triphenylphosphine (TPP) and oxidized oil to afford triphenylphosphineoxide (TPPO). Diphenylphosphineoxide (DPPO)
was employed as internal standard. The formed TPPO was analyzed by high-pressure liquid chromatography–UV spectroscopy with
absorption at 260 nm. The conditions that gave the highest correlative calibration curve between the peak area on the chromatogram
and peroxide value were identified: the optimum TPP–oxidized oil mix ratio, reaction temperature, and reaction time were found
to be 2:1, 40 °C, and 30 min, respectively. Linear calibration curves, passing through the origin, were obtained for PV versus
TPPO and TPPO versus DPPO. The quantification limit for this method was 2.01 pmol hydroperoxyl group, which corresponds to
a PV value of 0.2 meq/kg in a 10-mg oil sample. This method was used to measure the PV in colored fats and oils or lipids
extracted from dark meat and processed food containing a coloring agent. Though the official method could not measure the
PVs in the colored lipids, the method proposed here, which uses an inexpensive chemical reagent and machine, could. The developed

Using the pH-jump (neutral to above 11) for Tyr-OH ionization as a probe, two glucoamylases from Rhizopus niveus and Rhizopus delemar were found to be caused the change in conformation, which is in a kinetically single step. The pH titration at pHs below 12 was carried out on a multidimensional correlation spectrophotometer. Correlations among the spectrophotometric properties: fluorescence, absorption and circular dichroism are almost identical for the two enzymes. These results suggest that conformational characteristics of the niveus enzyme is almost the same as that of the delemar one. 相似文献

A micro-space cell culture system was recently developed in which cells such as hepatocytes can be cultured and formed into a multicellular three-dimensional (3D) architecture. In this study, we assessed the performance of HepG2 cells cultured in this micro-space cell culture system in a drug toxicity test, and evaluated the effects of micro-space culture on their hepatocyte-specific functions. The micro-space cell culture facilitated the formation of 3D HepG2 cell architecture. HepG2 cells cultured in a micro-space culture plate exhibited increased albumin secretion and enhanced mRNA expression levels of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme compared to those cultured in a monolayer culture. When the cells were exposed to acetaminophen, a hepatotoxic drug, the damage to the HepG2 cells grown in micro-space culture was greater than the damage to the HepG2 cells grown in monolayer culture. In addition, human primary hepatocytes grown in micro-space culture also exhibited increased albumin secretion, enhanced CYP mRNA expression levels and increased sensitivity to acetaminophen compared to those grown in monolayer culture. These results suggest that this micro-space culture method enhances the hepatocyte-specific functions of hepatocytes, including drug-metabolizing enzyme activities, making hepatocytes grown in the micro-space culture system a useful tool for evaluating drug toxicity in vitro. 相似文献
