The post-implementation evaluation of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, multimedia or parallel computing systems which are in operation is a much neglected problem. There is a lack of methods, techniques and tools for the practitioner to analyze the performance such systems. In earlier work, we have presented a framework and methodology that described a socio-technical approach for evaluating expert systems. In short, we determined the features and characteristics of expert systems that are most critical for their “implementation success”. This was the result of empirical evidence from a first-ever field study of expert systems in production. In this paper, specifically tailored to an audience of generalists, we retrospectively put our work into the framework of performance measurement and analysis. In this paper, we have proposed some new numerical and semi-analytical methods for developing an equivalent three-layer model of an MQW waveguide. The waveguiding properties like effective index, field distribution, and fractional power within the core of the waveguide of these equivalent structures are compared with those of previously reported equivalent methods. These results are also compared with the results obtained from the exact multilayer analysis of the MQW waveguide. The waveguiding properties are accurately predicted by the semi-analytical method using variational analysis, and the computational effort is significantly reduced. Variable rate speech coding is now recognized as an important system component for high-capacity cellular networks because it exploits speech statistics to reduce the average bit rate, which results in reduced interference and increased capacity. Once a variable rate capability is available, an additional capacity enhancement can be achieved by introducing network control of the user bit rate in response to changing traffic levels. We introduce the concept of network control of rate and propose a particular network-control method for code-division multiple access (CDMA) systems. Based on an M/M/∞//M queueing model applied to a cell under heavy traffic conditions and a new performance measure called averaged speech quality, we obtain simulation results to demonstrate how network control of rate can achieve improved speech quality or increased capacity for a given quality objective 相似文献

A simple, accurate MOSFET substrate current model suitable for a circuit simulator is presented. The effect of substrate bias on substrate current is modeled without introducing additional parameters. The accuracy of this model is demonstrated by its ability to fit the experimental data for both standard and LDD devices with average errors of less than 6%. The new model is compared with the substrate current models reported in the literature. In addition, the temperature dependence of the substrate current in the range of 0-120°C is also modeled. To develop an all organic active matrix light emitting display required for large area thin display, electronic paper and electronic paints, Si-based thin film transistor has to be replaced with organic thin film transistor (OTFT). The most important issues in OTFT are the low charge carrier mobility and poor stability under ambient conditions, which critically depend on how organic thin films are grown on different substrates. Here we show that both these issues are correlated and can be overcome by certain surface morphology which can only be achieved through anisotropic growth. Careful control of different growth parameters can lead to unprecedented control on thin film morphology which has been shown to be engineered reversibly and reproducibly. High temperature and low evaporation rate increase the diffusive mobility of molecules, which are responsible for the stacking of molecules to higher length scales. By carefully choosing a temperature and evaporation rate, elongated rod-like grains were grown for achieving high performance and stable thin film transistors. 相似文献

High-power highly strained InxGa1-xAs quantum-well lasers operating at 1.2 μm are demonstrated. The edge emitting broad area (BA) laser diode structures are grown by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy at low growth temperatures using trimethylgallium, trimethylindium, and arsine sources. In the laser structure, an InGaAs QW is sandwiched between the GaAs waveguide and AlGaAs cladding layers. The operating wavelength for the laser diode at room temperature (20°C) is about 1206 nm, which redshifts to 1219 nm at 46°C. The transparency current density for the BA laser diodes is as low as 52 A/cm2 and the characteristic temperature value is 76 K.
