Molecular structure and stereoelectronic properties of sarmazenil--a weak inverse agonist at the omega modulatory sites (benzodiazepine receptors): comparison with bretazenil and flumazenil

X-ray diffraction and ab initio MO theoretical calculations were used in order to investigate the structural and electronic properties of sarmazenil, a weak inverse agonist at the omega modulatory sites (benzodiazepine receptors). This compound was compared to bretazenil, a partial agonist, and to the antagonist flumazenil on the basis of structural and electronic data. The conformational and theoretical properties (interatomic pi overlap populations, molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), the topology of frontier orbitals, and proton affinity) of these three imidazobenzodiazepinones were determined in order to analyse the stereoelectronic properties in relation with their distinct intrinsic efficacies at the omega modulatory sites.     

Candida fungemia in neonates treated with fluconazole: report of forty cases, including eight with meningitis

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To assess efficacy and safety of fluconazole in neonates with Candida fungemia. STUDY DESIGN: Multicenter prospective protocol of all fungemias appearing between January 1, 1993, and December 31, 1997, in four major university hospitals. RESULTS: Forty neonates, 28 of them with very low birth weight (<1500 g; 30.5 median gestation week), with documented Candida albicans fungemia were treated with intravenous fluconazole in a daily dosage of 6 mg/kg once daily for 6 to 48 days. Thirty-four received fluconazole as monotherapy and 6 received it in combination with amphotericin B. Thirty-two (80%) were cured; 4 of them relapsed despite at least 14 days of therapy, but they were ultimately cured without sequelae. Eight other neonates died, 4 because of fungal infection and 4 because of prematurity or hemorrhage or lung failure, with fungemia (20% overall and 10% attributable mortality). Two neonates had elevated liver enzymes during fluconazole therapy and 2 others had elevated serum creatinine during fluconazole monotherapy. In none of them did these abnormalities necessitate discontinuation of antifungal therapy. In 8 neonates fungal meningitis developed as a complication of fungemia. All but 3 fungemias were C. albicans; 3 were Candida parapsilosis. CONCLUSIONS: Fluconazole was safe and effective antifungal therapy even in complicated or Candida fungemia in neonates and in infants with very low birth weight.     

Healon GV versus Healon in demanding cataract surgery

Spontaneous nasal tumors are rare in mice, and only one adenocarcinoma and two more primary neoplasms of the nose have been observed in our files of long-term feeding studies, which are composed of 3,419 male and 3,521 female CD-1 (Crl:CD-1 (ICR)BR) mice. This adenocarcinoma was a 1-cm-diameter mass observed grossly in the right nasal cavity of a 454-day-old, male CD-1 mouse from a treated group in a bioassay study conducted with 340 males and 340 females. The neoplastic epithelial cells affected the normal nasal architecture on the right side of the nose. Roughly, tumor neoplastic cells of the outer, lateral portion occurred as cuboidal to low columnar cells with basilarily located nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm. These cells were arranged in cylindrical profiles and frequently entrapped acini of the glands of the maxillary sinus. Neoplastic epithelial cells of the inner, medial portion appeared as serous acinar or ductular structures circumscribed by multiple lagers of myoepithelial-like cells. Staining failed to demonstrate mucous secretion. The site of origin of this neoplasm appeared to be the serous glands of the maxillary sinus. The adenocarcinoma was believed to be spontaneous.     

Limits of the output power in Er3+:ZBLAN singlemodefibre lasers

The saturation of the 2.71 μm laser output has been measured in erbium-doped ZBLAN singlemode fibres with Er³⁺ concentrations of 1000, 5000 and 10000 ppm mol. Limits of the single-mode-laser output are discussed     

Determination and interpretation of fractal properties of the sandstone pore system

A knowledge of fractal properties of the pore system is extremely useful with regard to the interrelationships between moisture transport and pore structure. The fractal dimension characterises the egree of resolutiondependence of a property. Given a completely interlaced pore system such as that of sandstone, the fractal dimension of the pore volume, or the porosity, quantifies the cross-sectional variability of the pore channels and is thus of great relevance with regard to transport processes. The fractal dimension of the pore surface describes the surface roughness. A newly-developed measuing technique is presented for the simultaneous determination of fractal dimensions of porosity and pore surface and for establishing fraction radii distributions in order to derive relevant parameters for moisture transport.     

Surgery of primary sphincter incontinence

A thorough functional analysis of the anorectal continence organ and the pelvic floor is a prerequisite for adequate treatment of incontinence. If conservative therapy has failed, corrective surgery on the basis of careful patient selection may well lead to improvement of continence. In our experience, plastic surgery of both the anterior levator ani muscle and the sphincter ani externus muscle is the treatment of choice for idiopathic incontinence.     

Exchange and oxidation of CO on O-predosed Rh---Al2O3 and Rh---CeO2 catalysts

Exchange and oxidation of C¹⁶O were investigated at 450°C on ¹⁸O-predosed Rh and Pt catalysts supported on A1₂O₃, CeO₂ and CeO₂-Al₂O₃. In all cases, a rapid exchange of C¹⁶O with the surface can be observed. CO oxidation leads to C¹⁶O₂, C¹⁶O¹⁸O and C¹⁸O₂. Significant formation of C¹⁶O₂ is due to the relatively high ¹⁶O coverage in reaction resulting from the C¹⁶O exchange and from an exchange between O surface species and ¹⁶O internal atoms. Hydrogen is also formed via a water-gas shift reaction (CO + surface OH) in higher proportion on CeO₂-containing catalysts than on A1₂O₃. Chlorine inhibits all the reactions (exchange, oxidation and WGS) and particularly the internal exchange.     

Effect of pressure gradient on MHD boundary layer over a flat plate

Summary The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) boundary layer flow over a flat plate is examined here for two cases, viz. a uniform free-stream velocity and a uniform hydrostatic pressure. The nonlinear boundary layer equations are solved using a reliable finite-difference method. The boundary layer physical parameters such as skin-friction coefficient, displacement, momentum and energy thicknesses of the boundary layer are determined. It is found that the normal surface velocity gradient decreases with the local magnetic interaction parameter for the cases of a uniform hydrostatic pressure, whereas in the case of a uniform free-stream volocity it increases with the interaction parameter.     

COMMENTS ON THE DETERMINATION OF FRIABILITY AND UNMODIFIED GRAINS

The Analysis Committee of the European Brewery Convention is aware that the Friabilimeter sometimes is used on samples that do not comply with the field of application. The precision of the method is also overlooked by some users. The field of application, precision of the method as well as the need for frequent testing of the instrument is therefore stressed in more detail than in the earlier published method by the EBC Analysis Committee.
