On examination of the thumbs of 20 dissected preparations of ligaments and joints, of ten dry skeletons and of a number of living hands, apoposition (from apo = away from) was distinguished as a position in which the first carpometacarpal joint is fully abducted and laterally rotated and in which one or both distal joints of the thumb are flexed. Apoposition is commonly used in writing and it has a specific osteoligamentous basis for its stability: (1) a Y-shaped intermetacarpal ligament is attached by two crura to the base of the second metacarpal bone and by a common stem to the first metacarpal. Together with the palmar and dorsal oblique ligaments it becomes taut at abduction and establishes thereby a fixed center for the circumduction. Stability is enhanced as the circumduction takes place in the radial flat part of the joint away from the center; (2) of the two palmar prominences of the head of the first metacarpal bone the radial is the larger. At 25-30 degrees flexion in the metacarpophalangeal joint the prominence fits into an excavation on the base of the proximal phalanx in a manner which together with the ulnar collateral ligament locks the joint against mutual abduction and lateral rotation, and (3) the radial part of the trochlea of the interphalangeal joint is larger than the ulnar and secures, together with the ulnar collateral ligament, the joint against a radial luxation. Apoposition does not require activity of the thumb muscles; it is brought about by applying an external force to the ulnar side of the thumb and it is checked by ligaments and the shape of the joints.  相似文献

A small, low-cost, highly sensitive system to record geomagnetic fluctuations on the ocean floor is described. The technique employed is to amplify the effective sensitivity of the Cs-vapor magnetometer with an intermediate stage discriminator amplifier voltagecontrolled oscillator prior to magnetic recording. The resultant overall electronic system noise level obtained is well below the inherent noise level of the sensor, permitting accurate measurement of undersea magnetic fluctuations up to 5 Hz.  相似文献

From October 1988 to January 1992, nine isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa carrying transferable plasmids encoding imipenem-hydrolyzing beta-lactamase (pI = c. 9.5) were recovered from nine different patients in a neurosurgical ward of a hospital in Japan. The beta-lactamase activities of the sonicated extracts from the transconjugants were inhibited by EDTA and this was partially reversible by the addition of zinc cation. The substrate specificity and pI of the beta-lactamase were similar to those of the metallo beta-lactamases from P. aeruginosa and Serratia marcescens TN9106. All strains were resistant to imipenem, carbenicillin and antipseudomonal cephems including ceftazidime, cefsulodin, cefpirome, while four and five strains were susceptible to piperacillin and aztreonam, respectively. Both low level imipenem resistance and high level cephem resistance were co-transferred with the production of metallo beta-lactamase, while resistance to piperacillin, aztreonam, and high level imipenem-resistance were not selected. Production of chromosomal cephalosporinase in piperacillin resistant strains was derepressed, and production of outer membrane protein of D2 was diminished in highly imipenem resistant strains. Six strains were isolated in 1991, and the amounts of antipseudomonal agents, especially imipenem, used in the neurosurgical ward increased markedly in this year. Only three of the nine isolates had the same serotype, pyocin type and phage type. Our results suggest that the repeated isolation of imipenem and cephem-resistant P. aeruginosa producing metallo beta-lactamase was related to the high usage of antipseudomonal beta-lactam antibiotics such as imipenem, and was exacerbated by the dissemination of a plasmid.  相似文献

Recently, we found that different low molecular weight compounds, all known to stabilize proteins in their native conformation, are effective in correcting the temperature-sensitive protein folding defect associated with the deltaF508 cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) protein. Here we examined whether the folding of other proteins which exhibit temperature-sensitive folding defects also could be corrected via a similar strategy. Cell lines expressing temperature-sensitive mutants of the tumor suppressor protein p53, the viral oncogene protein pp60src, or a ubiquitin activating enzyme E1, were incubated at the nonpermissive temperature (39.5 degrees C) in the presence of glycerol, trimethylamine N-oxide or deuterated water. In each case, the cells exhibited phenotypes similar to those observed when the cells were incubated at the permissive temperature (32.5 degrees C), indicative that the particular protein folding defect had been corrected. These observations, coupled with our earlier work and much older studies in yeast and bacteria, indicate that protein stabilizing agents are effective in vivo for correcting protein folding abnormalities. We suggest that this type of approach may prove to be useful for correcting certain protein folding abnormalities associated with human diseases.  相似文献
