This study focused on the metal bioaccumulation of two aquatic insects (Ephoron virgo and Hydropsyche spp.) in order to evaluate the spatial distribution of metals, the interspecific differences between both filter-feeders and the bioaccumulation dynamics during E. virgo development stages. Hg, Cd, Ni, Cr, As, Pb, Cu, Ti, Zn and Mn were quantified in insects and in suspended particulate matter (SPM) sampled downstream and upstream of a chemical plant, where more than 300,000 t of polluted sediments are deposited. Hg concentrations were one order of magnitude higher downstream of the sediment dump, which showed that the Hg pollution originated in the chemical plant. Cd, Ni, Cr, Pb, Ti, Zn and Mn in invertebrates revealed that metal pollution was present upstream in other parts of the river. Interspecific differences were observed for all metals but Mn; significantly higher concentrations were observed in E. virgo over Hydropsyche exocellata, except for Cd, which showed 10-fold higher values. Hg and Cd increased until E. virgo nymphs reached 11 mm and decreased afterwards in late instars when nymphs were about to emerge. Cr, Pb, Ti and Mn decreased along early instars followed by a steady state in late instars. Similar values were obtained for Cu, As and Zn along all instars. Sexual differences between males and females of E. virgo were observed for Cd, Cu and Mn. Hg and Cd persistence was strong across developmental stages since high concentrations were found in eggs and emerging adults. Because the behavior of different metals varied for the two species and during the developmental stages of E. virgo, care should be taken in the interpretation of insect metal concentrations when analyzing the food chain transfer of metals in river ecosystems.  相似文献

The flow within a sewage screening chamber can be highly complex due to high-flow conditions and the geometrical constraints imposed by the screening chamber itself. This paper presents an application of a two-dimensional depth-averaged shallow flow model for flow simulations in a sewage screening chamber. For this purpose, the shallow flow model is improved by including a simple turbulence model. The improved model is able to reproduce the main features of the flow field, as confirmed by comparing with the measurements resulting from a scale-down laboratory model. The potential of numerical model for analysing the performance of the screening chamber is then demonstrated by testing a new design of including flow dissipating blocks to (i) re-distribute more evenly the flow through different flow passages installed with screens and (ii) reduce maximum mean flow velocity approaching the screens, so as to reduce the risk of damaging the screens during high-flow conditions.  相似文献

Strength of bearing connections in toughened glass plates for the structural use. In steel structures due to their “infinite'” ductility the bearing connections are standard components of joints. Their design rules are based on simple engineering models. However if analogous bearing connections are subject of glazing structures the requirements on the materials' ductility cannot be met. Therefore interlayers out of mortar etc. in the hole surrounding the bolt have to be introduced such that a ductile load deformation behaviour can be reached reducing stress peaks and avoiding steel‐glass‐contact. On this basis design rules are to be established to predict the load carrying capacity of bolts in glass bearings. The following investigations describe the experimental and theoretical works to derive an engineering model for this purpose.  相似文献

Three different NIR equipment were evaluated based on their ability to predict superficial water activity (a(w)) and moisture content in two types of fermented sausages (with and without moulds on surface), using partial least squares (PLS) regression models. The instruments differed mainly in wavelength range, resolution and measurement configuration. The most accurate equipment was used in a new experiment to achieve robust models in sausages with different salt contents and submitted to different drying conditions. The models developed showed determination coefficients (R(2)(P)) values of 0.990, 0.910 and 0.984, and RMSEP values of 1.560%, 0.220% and 0.007% for moisture, salt and a(w) respectively. It was demonstrated that NIR spectroscopy could be a suitable non-destructive method for on-line monitoring and control of the drying process in fermented sausages.  相似文献

In a world with an increasing urban population, analysing the construction impacts of sanitation infrastructures through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is necessary for defining the best environmental management strategies. In this study, the environmental impacts of one linear meter of sewer constructive solution were analysed for different pipe materials and diameters used in Southern Europe; a unit of different sewer appurtenances (pump, manhole and inspection chamber) was also considered. The impacts of the pipe materials were compared considering different lifespan periods and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) turned out to be the worst option, being polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and concrete the most favourable ones. Few data are available on the material and energy flows in the installation stage; therefore, a comparative analysis of trenches with sand and concrete bedding was conducted. The results show that the installation stage represents up to 80 % of the total life-cycle impact of the constructive solutions. Concrete pipes with half-concrete/half-sand bedding are the best option and produce 20–30 % of the impact of HDPE pipes with concrete bedding. Hence, designers should focus not only on the pipe but also on the trench model. A methodology was presented to enable the impact aggregation of the different sewer elements, and Betanzos (Spain) was selected to conduct a pilot study in small cities. In the future, studies will need to incorporate the use and maintenance stage, as it is not standard and varies according to the physical features of the cities. Finally, this study provides basic concepts for developing eco-efficiency indicators.  相似文献

A detailed reliability assessment was made of electricity generation systems in Spain that are based on Brassica carinata cultivation. The assessment considers the following chain of energy generation: biomass cultivation and harvesting, transportation and electricity generation in biomass power plants (10, 25 and 50 MW). Flue gas desulphurisation systems have been included for larger plants following the criteria of the Spanish legislative framework. Six scenarios were analysed in accordance with the following aspects: two crop distributions around the power plant and three power plant sizes. The results show that the cost of biomass delivered at the power plants ranges from 107.81 to 112.54 € Mg−1 dry basis.Sensibility analysis shows that variation in biomass production in the field demonstrates that biomass cost delivered at the plant is notably affected and consequently so is the system's feasibility.Furthermore, the increase of the price of CO2 emission credits, also considered in sensibility analysis, can help to improve the reliability of systems because of the increase of gross profit for each scenario.This study clears up the Economic uncertainty of B. carinata biomass energy systems based on the single use of this renewable energy resource. Higher crop productivities are needed to ensure an economic reliability of the analysed systems. On the other hand biomass mix can solve SO2 emission cleaning cost for large power plants, improving the reliability of B. carinata application as fuel.  相似文献

The poplar bioenergy system has been analysed applying life cycle assessment (LCA) to compare its environmental performance to: Ethiopian mustard bioenergy system and natural gas. The life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) shows that the use of fertilizers is the highest impact in four of the 10 environmental categories, representing between 39% and 67% of the impact in them. The diesel used in transport vehicles and agricultural tractors also has a significant impact in another five of the 10 analysed categories 40–85%. The poplar bioenergy system contributes to global warming with 1.90–1.98 g CO2 eq MJ?1 biomass produced. The production and transport as far as the thermoelectric plant of the poplar biomass consumes 0.02 MJ of primary energy per 1 MJ of biomass stored. In comparison with Ethiopian mustard and natural gas, it reduces primary energy consumption by 83% and 89% and the greenhouse gas emission by 84% and 89%, respectively. The results of the analysis support that the poplar bioenergy system is viable from an energy balance and environmental perspective for producing energy in southern Europe, as long as it is cultivated in areas where water is available. This latter point and the better environmental performance of both crops in comparison to natural gas allows us to affirm that the combination of several crops adapted to the local agro-climatic conditions of the territory will be the most suitable strategy in Mediterranean areas that wish to reach the global energy production targets in terms of biomass established by the European Union (EU).  相似文献

Non-invasive techniques such as magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) are often required for assisting the diagnosis of tumours. Radiologists are not always accustomed to make sense of the biochemical information provided by MRS and they may benefit from computer-based support in their decision making. The high dimensionality of the MR spectra obscures atypical aspects of the data that may jeopardize their classification. In this study, we describe a method to overcome this problem that combines nonlinear dimensionality reduction, outlier detection, and expert opinion. MR spectra subsequently undergo a feature selection process followed by classification. The impact of outlier removal on classification performance is assessed.  相似文献
