Aerodynamic effect on natural frequency and flutter instability in rotating optical disks

 Experimental studies on the aerodynamic coupling effect on natural frequencies and flutter instability of rotating disks are investigated in this paper. The experiments performed using a vacuum chamber and optical disks give two main results. One is that the aerodynamic effect by surrounding air reduces the natural frequencies and critical speeds of the vibration modes in pre-flutter regions. The other is that the natural frequency of the disk rotating at ambient atmospheric pressure is equal to that in vacuum at the flutter onset speed where the disk experiences aero-induced flutter. In post-flutter regions, the aerodynamic coupling between the disk and surrounding air increases the natural frequencies of the disk. On the current delivery limit of semiconducting carbon nanotubes

The current carrying capacity of single-walled semiconducting carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is studied by self-consistent quantum simulations using the non-equilibrium Green’s function formalism with the self-consistent Born approximation. The simulation shows that the current carrying capacity depends on the bias regime and is drastically different from that of metallic tubes. For long CNTs (with a length much longer than zone boundary and optical phonon scattering mean free path), the current saturates around 20 μA in the forward bias regime with unipolar transport due to phonon scattering. In ambipolar transport regime, the current delivery limit is still about 20 μA due to recombination of electron and hole currents. In contrast, for short semiconducting CNTs, the current delivery capacity can be above 25 μA in the unipolar transport regime and further double in the ambipolar transport regime. In reverse bias regime, the current of a long CNT can exceed 20 μA due to the second subband conduction and increased electron injection from the drain. The simulation provides a coherent explanation to the dependence of current delivery limit on bias regime and channel length, which is consistent with recent experiments.     

Effects of free convection and mass transfer on the flow past an impulsively moving infinite vertical circular cylinder

The effects of free convection and mass transfer are taken into account for the Stokes' problem of the flow near an impulsively moving infinite vertical circular cylinder. Expressions of the velocity, temperature, concentration and skin friction of the fluid in closed form are obtained by the Laplace transform technique. The results based on various values of the parameters Gr (Grashof number), Gm (modified Grashof number), Sc (Schmidt number) and Pr (Prandtl number) are given in graphical form. It will be seen that there is a rise in the velocity due to the presence of a foreign mass. But higher Sc yields the lower velocity and skin friction. As the radius of the circular cylinder approaches to infinite, the results presented in this paper agree with those of V.M. Soundalgekar's and C.K. Chen's etc. for the flow past an impulsively moving infinite vertical plate.     

An experimental investigation of electrically thick rectangular microstrip antennas

The electromagnetic properties of electrically thick rectangular microstrip antennas were investigated experimentally. Antennas were fabricated with different patch sizes and with electrical thicknesses ranging from 0.03 to 0.23 wavelengths in the dielectric substrate. The resonant frequencies were measured and compared to existing formulas. The bandwidth was calculated as a function of electrical thickness and the antenna radiation patterns were measured.     

Noninterfering optical method of HBT circuit evaluation

The authors report a novel noninterfering and simple approach for evaluation of circuits implemented with AlGaAs/GaAs heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs). This method makes use of radiative recombination in the base region of current-carrying HBTs. The infrared radiation emitted is 'visible' to the closed-circuit TV (CCTV) cameras. Therefore, one can view the operation of the HBT circuit under test at normal biases with a TV monitor. This method can be used to determine logic states of gates, as well as collector current of individual HBTs within integrated circuits.<>     

Eigen filter to detect volitional EMG signals in autogenic EMG-controlled FES

Presented is an eigen filter to remove autogenic electrical stimulation artefacts and M-waves while preserving the volitional electromyographic signal. The optimality of the eigen filter is shown, along with simulated and measured data to indicate its superior performance over conventional prediction error filters.     

Polarization independent isolator using spatial walkoff polarizers

A novel type of polarization-independent optical isolator is described which utilizes the polarization walkoff provided by birefringent crystals. Isolation of 44 dB is measured at a wavelength of 1.3 mu m with single-mode fiber insertion loss of 1.5 dB. A temperature-independent scheme is also described that provides at least 39 dB of isolation over the temperature range of 25-75 degrees C.<>     

High performance liquid chromatographic separation of stereoisomeric bile acids as their UV-sensitive esters

High performance liquid chromatographic separation of a series of mono-, di- and trihydroxylated 5β-cholanic acids which differ only in position and configuration of hydroxyl groups at positions C-3, C-7 and/or C-12, is reported. The C-24 free acids were derivatized to four different classes of UV-sensitive esters, i.e.,p-bromophenacyl (BP),m-methoxyphenacyl (MP), 4-nitrophthalimidemethyl (NPM) and 9-anthrylmethyl (AM) esters, and chromatographed on two, variants of C₁₈ reversed-phase columns (Nova-Pak C₁₈ and Zorbax ODS) with methanol-water systems as mobile phase. Separation efficiency and elution order of some isomeric pairs were influenced by both the structure of the C-24 ester groups and the nature of the columns used. Excellent chromatographic properties were found for those derivatives, particularly for the NPM esters.

China Likely to Resume Oil Futures Soon

China is likely to resume operation of its oil futures this year, according to reports from the media about a futures conference organized by the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) in late May. "As China has become an important oil producer and consumer,the demand for our own oil futures market emerges,which will help China oil-related enterprises hedge risks," said Li Ruisheng, vice president of PetroChina's refining and marketing company.
