Characterization of emissions from burning incense 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The primary objective of this study was to improve the characterization of particulate matter emissions from burning incense. Emissions of particulate matter were measured for 23 different types of incense using a cyclone/filter method. Emission rates for PM2.5 (particulate matter less than 2.5 microm in aerodynamic diameter) ranged from 7 to 202 mg/h, and PM2.5 emission factors ranged from 5 to 56 mg/g of incense burned. Emission rates were also determined using an electrical low pressure impactor (ELPI) and a small electrostatic precipitator (ESP), and emission rates were compared to those determined using the cyclone/filter method. Emission rates determined by the ELPI method were consistently lower than those determined by the cyclone/filter method, and a linear regression correlation was found between emission rates determined by the two methods. Emission rates determined by the ESP method were consistently higher than those determined by the cyclone/filter method, indicating that the ESP may be a more effective method for measuring semivolatile particle emissions. A linear regression correlation was also found between emission rates determined by the ESP and cyclone/filter methods. Particle size distributions were measured with the ELPI, and distributions were found to be similar for most types of incense that were tested. Size distributions by mass typically ranged from approximately 0.06 to 2.5 microm in aerodynamic diameter, with peak values between 0.26 and 0.65 microm. Results indicated that burning incense emits fine particulate matter in large quantities compared to other indoor sources. An indoor air quality model showed that indoor concentrations of PM25 can far exceed the outdoor concentrations specified by the US EPA's National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), so incense smoke can pose a health risk to people due to inhalation exposure of particulate matter. Emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) were also measured for seven types of incense. Emission rates of the gaseous pollutants were sufficient to cause indoor concentrations, estimated using the indoor air quality model, to exceed the outdoor concentrations specified by the NAAQS under certain conditions. Although well-established textbook arguments suggest that static electric susceptibility χ(0) must be positive in “all bodies,” it has been pointed out that materials that are not in thermodynamic equilibrium are not necessarily subject to this restriction. Media with inverted populations of atomic and molecular energy levels have been predicted theoretically to exhibit a χ(0) < 0 state, however the systems envisioned require reduced temperature, reduced pressure, and an external pump laser to maintain the population inversion. Further, the existence of χ(0) < 0 has never been confirmed experimentally. Here, a completely different approach is taken to the question of χ(0) < 0 and a design concept to achieve “true” χ(0) < 0 is proposed based on active metamaterials with internal power sources. Two active metamaterial structures are fabricated that, despite still having their power sources implemented externally for reasons of practical convenience, provide evidence in support of the general concept. Effective values are readily achieved at room temperature and pressure and are tunable throughout the range of stability −1 < χ(0) < 0, resulting in experimentally-determined magnitudes that are over one thousand times greater than those predicted previously. Since χ(0) < 0 is the missing electric analog of diamagnetism, this work opens the door to new technological capabilities such as stable electrostatic levitation. 相似文献

We report a simple model describing the solubility of rods in solvents, expressing the final result explicitly in terms of the surface entropy and the enthalpy of mixing. This model can be combined with any expression for the mixing enthalpy depending on the requirements. For example, in one instance it predicts the dispersed concentration of rods to decrease exponentially with the Flory-Huggins parameter of the dispersion. Using a different enthalpy function, it predicts a Gaussian peak when concentration is plotted versus solvent surface energy. The model also suggests specific solvent-rod interactions to be important and shows the dispersed concentration to be very sensitive to ordering at the solvent-rod interface. We have used this model to describe experimental results for the concentration of dispersed nanotubes in various solvents. Qualitative agreement with these predictions is observed experimentally. However, we suggest that the fact that quantitative agreement is not found may be explained by solvent ordering at the nanotube surface. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To propose a definition for stage IA1 cervical adenocarcinoma, based on the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging system, and to determine if patients meeting criteria might be candidates for conservative surgery. METHODS: Two hundred women were diagnosed with early-stage cervical adenocarcinoma from 1982 to 1996. Histopathologic sections were reviewed by a gynecologic pathologist. Medical records were reviewed, and patients included in this study had microscopically identifiable lesions, up to 3 mm invasive depth, up to 7 mm tumor width, and negative margins if cone biopsy was performed. RESULTS: Twenty-one patients with microinvasive adenocarcinoma met criteria for FIGO stage IA1 carcinoma of the cervix. The median (range) follow-up was 76 (30-172) months and median (range) patient age was 38 (24-75) years. Definitive treatment included type II or III radical hysterectomy in 16 cases, simple abdominal or vaginal hysterectomy in four cases, and loop electrosurgical excision procedure in one case; one patient received adjuvant pelvic radiation. The histologic subtypes were endocervical adenocarcinoma in 18 cases, adenosquamous carcinoma in two cases, and clear-cell adenocarcinoma in one case. There was no evidence of parametrial invasion or lymph node metastases in any patient who had radical surgery, and there were no disease recurrences. CONCLUSION: Patients with microinvasive adenocarcinoma who met criteria for FIGO stage IA1 cervical carcinoma had disease limited to the cervix, and conservative surgery, such as cone biopsy or simple hysterectomy, might offer them definitive treatment. 相似文献

Ordinal knowledge is a fundamental aspect of advanced cognition. It is self-evident that humans represent ordinal knowledge, and over the past 20 years it has become clear that nonhuman primates share this ability. In contrast, evidence that nonprimate species represent ordinal knowledge is missing from the comparative literature. To address this issue, in the present experiment we trained pigeons on three 4-item lists and then tested them with derived lists in which, relative to the training lists, the ordinal position of the items was either maintained or changed. Similar to the findings with human and nonhuman primates, our pigeons performed markedly better on the maintained lists compared to the changed lists, and displayed errors consistent with the view that they used their knowledge of ordinal position to guide responding on the derived lists. Watta and Hassoun (1996) proposed a coupled gradient neural network for mixed integer programming. In this network continuous neurons were used to represent discrete variables. For the larger temporal problem they attempted many of the solutions found were infeasible. This paper proposes an augmented Hopfield network which is similar to the coupled gradient network proposed by Watta and Hassoun. However, in this network truly discrete neurons are used. It is shown that this network can be applied to mixed integer programming. Results illustrate that feasible solutions are now obtained for the larger temporal problem. 相似文献

This case of ectopic pancreas found in the pre-pyloric channel of a 2-day-old infant is unique. A review of the literature reveals no other cases of symptomatic ectopic pancreas in an infant of this age. In this patient, signs and symptoms were consistent with pyloric stenosis. This study investigated (1) whether a characterization of the macroscopic architecture within the vertebral centrum would improve predictions of vertebral strength, (2) if regions in the centrum where least bone loss with age occurs are more predictive of vertebral strength, and (3) whether different patterns of the macroscopic architecture are predictive of static as compared to fatigue strength. To characterize the vertebral macroscopic architecture, a regional bone mineral density (rBMD) technique was used that estimated the cancellous density distribution (in 18 specific regions of the vertebral centrum) for vertebrae T7-L4, from spines of 20 female cadavers. Static and fatigue failure properties of whole vertebrae were obtained, and predictive models of static and fatigue failure properties of whole vertebrae were examined. We found that (1) vertebral failure properties were better predicted by combinations of vertebral regional cancellous density (multiple linear regressions) rather than by any individual region of cancellous density alone (simple linear regressions); (2) models using regions of density that demonstrated minimum decline with age [from the data of Flynn and Cody (Calcif. Tissue Int. 53, S170-S175 (1993))] resulted in better correlations with ex vivo vertebral static failure properties than models using density regions that showed maximum decline with age, and (3) static and fatigue characteristics required different density regions to reach significance.
