A critical analysis of a tensile test is presented through a probabilistic model describing the random behavior of heterogeneous materials. Simulations of experimental tests are in aggrement with the experimental results and show that the hypothesis of homogeneity of the strain field within the specimen is not correct all over the load history. Strain localization appears producing a first macrocrack, just followed by a second one and in some cases by a third one. This paper summarises an internationally funded assessment of the low temperature fracture toughness requirements of the British Standards Institution Document BS5500:1976, ‘Specification for unfired fusion welded pressure vessels’. The assessment was based on an analysis of wide plate brittle fracture tests, supporting chemical compositions and small-scale mechanical test data from worldwide sources, all these data having been collated in a programme of work involving The Welding Institute (UK), Gent University Research Centre of Welding (Belgium) and Delft University of Technology Metallurgical Department (Netherlands).The assessment showed that the BS5500 requirements are generally safe. In Exp I, when previously isolated male CD-1 mice (n?=?26) were paired and given a female, they fought before beginning to mount, and the more aggressive male ejaculated somewhat more frequently. Males housed together (n?=?26) for several days showed little aggression when jointly given a female, but those that were more aggressive in the home cage clearly ejaculated more frequently. In Exp II, with 144 Ss, males were paired for 4 days after a period of isolation. More aggressive males showed more ejaculations when subsequently tested individually with females, but not when pair members conjointly encountered females. In Exp III, 60 males were paired for several weeks before encountering females. In cases in which home cage dominance was constant, the more aggressive males ejaculated more frequently both when tested individually and when tested as pairs. Findings indicate that success in reproductive behavior in mice is contingent on dominance in intermale aggressive encounters. The susceptibility of major plasma lipoproteins to lipoperoxidation was studied in relation to the FA composition of their
neutral and polar lipids in steers given PUFA-rich diets. Two trials used, respectively, 18 (“sunflower” experiment, S) or
24 (“linseed” experiment, L) crossbred Salers x Charolais steers. Each involved three dietary treatments over a 70-d period:
a control diet (CS or CL diets) consisting of hay and concentrate, or the same diet supplemented with oilseeds (4% diet dry
matter) fed either as seeds (SS or LS diets) or continuously infused into the duodenum (ISO or ILO diets). Compared with control
diets, ISO and ILO treatments tended to decrease the resistance time of LDL and HDL classes to peroxidation, mainly owing
to the enrichment of their polar and neutral lipids with PUFA. With diets SS and LS, sensitivity of major lipoprotein classes
(LDL, light and heavy HDL) was not affected because ruminal hydrogenation of dietary PUFA decreased their incorporation into
lipoparticles. ISO and ILO treatments induced a more important production of conjugated dienes and hydroperoxides generated
by peroxidation in the three lipoprotein classes due to the higher amounts of PUFA esterified in lipids of the core and the
hydrophilic envelope of particles. The production of malondialdehyde (MDA) increased in steers fed linseed supplements, indicating
that MDA production did not occur with linoleic acid provided by sunflower oil supplements. Thus, plasma peroxidation of PUFA
generates toxic products in steers fed diets supplemented with PUFA and can be deleterious for the health of the animal during

Crystals melt when thermal excitations or the concentration of defects in the lattice is sufficiently high. Upon melting, the crystalline long‐range order vanishes, turning the solid to a fluid. In contrast to this classical scenario of solid melting, here a counter‐intuitive behavior of the occurrence of crystalline long‐range order in an initially disordered matrix is demonstrated. This unusual solidification is demonstrated in a system of passive colloidal particles accommodating chemically active defects—photocatalytic Janus particles. The observed crystallization occurs when the amount of active‐defect‐induced fluctuations (which is the measure of the effective temperature) reaches critical value. The driving mechanism behind this unusual behavior is purely internal and resembles a blast‐induced solidification. Here, the role of “internal micro‐blasts” is played by the photochemical activity of defects residing in the colloidal matrix. The defect‐induced solidification occurs under non‐equilibrium conditions: the resulting solid exists as long as a constant supply of energy in the form of ion flow is provided by the catalytic photochemical reaction at the surface of active Janus particle defects. The findings could be useful for the understanding of the phase transitions of matter under extreme conditions far from thermodynamic equilibrium. 相似文献
