This article presents an experimental investigation of a ductile rubber-modified polypropylene. The behaviour of the material is investigated by performing tension, shear and compression tests at quasi-static and dynamic strain rates. Subsequently, scanning electron microscopy is used to analyse the fracture surfaces of the tension test samples, and to relate the observed mechanical response to the evolution of the microstructure. The experimental study shows that the material is highly pressure and strain-rate sensitive. It also exhibits significant volume change, which is mainly ascribed to a cavitation process which appears during tensile deformation. Assuming matrix-particle debonding immediately after yielding, the rubber particles might play the role of initial cavities. It is further found that the flow stress level is highly dependent on the strain rate, and that the rate sensitivity seems to be slightly more pronounced in shear than in tension and compression. From the study of the fracture surfaces it appears that the fracture process is less ductile at high strain rates than under quasi-static conditions.  相似文献

Iron containing-antigen bound specifically to antibody immobilized on a surface is analyzed by nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS). This technique is well adapted compared with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy, which do not allow the detection of iron. The obtained Fe(+) map gives a good representation of the antigen repartition on the surface. NanoSIMS analysis of competition experiments performed with albumin and iron-free antigen are in good accordance with results obtained by a classical fluorescence microscopy approach. These results underline the interest of imaging NanoSIMS as a label-free method, allowing the localization and quantitative analysis of antigen-antibody binding with better spatial resolution than imaging ellipsometry and SPR.  相似文献

This paper examines the effects of replacing current fuel taxes by a system of taxes that account better for all the different external costs of the different transport modes. One of the important implications of this reform is that current fuel taxes are decreased to a level of 80 euro/ton of CO2 but that the mileage related taxes on car and truck use increase. Using the TREMOVE model for the transport sector of 31 European countries, one finds that the volume of transport will decrease because current taxes on transport are too low compared to overall external costs. Overall CO2 emissions will decrease slightly. Using the MARKAL–TIMES model for the Belgian energy sector, putting all sectors and technologies on equal footing shows that a fuel tax reform makes that it is not cost efficient to require large CO2 emission reductions in the transport sector and that traditional car technologies will continue to dominate the car market in 2020–2030.  相似文献

Purpose

To report the on-eye breakage of a mini-scleral contact lens in a healthy cornea after being hit by a speeding object, without causing any severe corneal damage.

Case report

A 24-year-old Caucasian male involved in a clinical study reported the in situ breakage of a mini-scleral contact lens during motorbike maintenance. The patient reported eye redness and irritation that significantly decreased after all the pieces of the lens were recovered from the eye. Ocular examinations within 48?h showed absence of corneal damage other than superficial punctate keratitis inferiorly and no fragments of the lens were found in the conjunctival sac. The patient was wearing a 15.2?mm mini-scleral lens in a high Dk material. The evolution of rigid materials towards higher Dk values has resulted in a decreased hardness and modulus values, so these materials are more elastic when subjected to mechanical stress, which could be a beneficial aspect in absorbing the energy of an impact before breaking in pieces.

Conclusion

This case report shows that ScCL could have a protective effect to the corneal surface from the direct impact of a high-speed object. Mechanical material properties, wide supporting area and post-lens tear volume acted as protective factors helping to absorb and distribute the kinetic energy of the impacting object.  相似文献

The influence of the tool dimensions and of the welding parameters on the fracture and lap shear properties of friction stir spot welds is investigated. Interrupted lap shear tests allow to follow the mechanisms leading to weld fracture. A triangular cavity opens at the hook during lap shear testing. The distance between this triangular cavity and the hole left by the pin is the main parameter controlling the type of fracture. A too short distance favors a fracture through the weld nugget and hence should be avoided. In particular, this happens when the tool pin diameter is too small and when the plunge rate is too large. Fracture initiating at the triangular cavity and following the thermomechanically affected zone, i.e., by the pullout of the weld nugget, is preferred. This fracture type leads to significant plastic deformation and generally favors a large ultimate force during lap shear testing. Large ultimate forces are observed when the welds are cooler (large plunge rates and low rotation speeds), but the welding conditions should be chosen so as not to lead to fracture trough the weld nugget.  相似文献

Background/PurposeAlthough scleral contact lenses are prescribed with increasing frequency, little is known about their long-term effects on ocular physiology. The main goal of this paper is to predict values of oxygen transmissibility of scleral lens systems by applying the concept of resistors in series to parameters characteristic of current scleral lenses. A second aim is to find the maximal lens and post-lens tear layer thickness combinations above which hypoxia-induced corneal swelling would be found.MethodsTheoretical calculations were used to predict the oxygen transmissibility of scleral lens systems, considering several material permeabilities (Dks 100–170), varying lens thicknesses (250–500 μm), the known tear permeability (Dk of 80) and expected post-lens tear layer thicknesses (100–400 μm). The Holden–Mertz Dk/t criteria of 24 Fatt units for the central cornea and the Harvitt–Bonanno criteria of 35 Fatt units for the limbal area were used as reference points.ResultsOur calculations of oxygen transmissibility, with varying tear layer and lens thicknesses, ranged from 10 to 36.7 at the scleral lens centers and from 17.4 to 62.6 at the peripheries. Our calculations of maximum central lens thicknesses show a practical range of 250–495 μm, in conjunction with a post-lens tear layer thickness of 100–250 μm.ConclusionOur computations show that most modern scleral lenses, with recommended fitting techniques, should lead to some level of hypoxia-induced corneal swelling. Recommendations are made to minimize hypoxia-induced corneal swelling: highest Dk available (>150) lens with a maximal central thickness of 250 μm and fitted with a clearance that does not exceed 200 μm.  相似文献

The tryptophan contents of 20 samples of various feedstuffs, determined by using assay procedures which were proved to give quantitative results, were compared with those predicted from the relationships between nitrogen and tryptophan published by three laboratories. The ratio of predicted tryptophan to the observed tryptophan, expressed as percentage, ranged from 65% (pea) to 137% (fishmeal). These differences were shown to be related to a systematic underestimation of tryptophan regarding data from two laboratories associated with a variability of tryptophan content for a given nitrogen content and a given type of feedstuff.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To analyse, retrospectively, the effect of fitting characteristics on comfort of wear and the role that 3D topographic data can play in attaining an optimal lens fit with rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses in normal eyes. METHODS: Included were 60 normal myopic eyes (1.00-5.00 D) with astigmatism limited to 2.00 D. Lenses were ordered empirically, based on traditional fitting rules. RESULTS: The initial fit based on traditional computation was accepted in 40% of the eyes. To achieve an acceptable fit, 15% of the eyes needed an adaptation of the back optic zone radius, in 28% switching from a multicurve to an aspheric lens design was indicated and in 17% a non-rotational symmetric lens design was favoured. The reason for changing the lens parameters could in 88% be attributed to mid-peripheral differences between corneal shape as found with 3D corneal topography. Average comfort of wear improved statistically significantly (chi(2), P<0.05) from 5.2 initially to 7.7 after 3 months in the group with optimal lens fits, while comfort slightly decreased (not significant) in the group with sub-optimal fits. Switching to a non-rotational symmetric lens design, when indicated, improved comfort significantly (chi(2), P<0.05) from 5.0 to 7.3. CONCLUSION: In normal eyes, the measurement of corneal shape, especially in the mid-peripheral regions, is of importance to optimise RGP lens fit. Optimised lens fits increases comfort of wear.  相似文献
