The urban air pollution is a very complicated problem. The exhaust emissions from internal-combustion engines account for a major portion of this problem. It is realized that the content and concentrations of the exhaust emissions depend on various parameters. These parameters include engine design parameters, operational parameters, exhaust gas aftertreatment, fuel types, fuel additives and lubricants. The present review paper discusses the effect of some parameters on the emission level and characteristics from internal-combustion engines. The paper begins with an introduction of general information on the nature of emissions of exhaust gases, including the toxicity and causes of emissions for both spark-ignition and diesel engines. The paper then shifts to an up-to-date information of the published research work on the subject matter. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Abstract: In this paper, the constitutive models involving two active intersecting yield surfaces, such as Lade's model, are considered and a new integration algorithm is formulated. The formulation introduces a new class of the return mapping algorithm within the framework of the operator splitting methodology. The proposed algorithm is applicable to a general class of elastoplastic constitutive models exhibiting associative or nonassociative flow rule, arbitrary yield criteria and hardening laws. The algorithm can handle one or two active yield surfaces at a time. The development leads to a relatively simple, straightforward algorithm for updating the stresses at Gauss point.
Finally, the new algorithm is implemented in a generalized nonlinear finite element computer program incorporating Lade's model. The results of a number of boundary value problems are presented and compared with available experimental data and theoretical formulas. The comparisons indicate that incorporating the new class of return mapping algorithm gives reasonable solutions.  相似文献

In view of the recent demonstration that obesity in animals and humans is associated with an increase in tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha) expression, that this expression falls with weight loss, and that TNFalpha may specifically inhibit insulin action, the possibility that TNFalpha may be a mediator of insulin resistance has been raised. We have undertaken this study to investigate whether serum TNFalpha concentrations are elevated in obese subjects, whether they fall after weight loss, and whether this fall parallels the fall in insulin release after glucose challenge. Obese patients (age range: 25-54, weight mean +/- SD: 96.4 +/- 13.8 kg, body mass index: 35.7 +/- 5.6 kg/m2) were started on a diet program. The mean weight fell to 84.5 +/- 11.3 (P < 0.0001) and body mass index to 31.3 +/- 4.9 (P < 0.0001). Plasma TNFalpha concentrations were markedly elevated in the obese (3.45 +/- 0.16 pg/mL), when compared with controls (0.72 +/- 0.28 pg/mL), and fell significantly (2.63 +/- 1.40 pg/mL) after weight loss (P < 0.02). The magnitude of insulin release after glucose (75 g) challenge (area under the curve) also fell significantly (P < 0.01) after weight loss. The magnitude of weight loss and fall in TNFalpha were related to basal body weight (r = 0.57, P < 0.001) and basal TNFalpha (r = 0.55, P < 0.001) concentrations, respectively, but not to each other or to the glucose-induced insulin release (area under the curve). We conclude that obesity is associated with increased plasma TNFalpha concentrations, which fall with weight loss. Because circulating TNFalpha may mediate insulin resistance in the obese, a fall in TNFalpha concentrations may contribute to the restoration of insulin resistance after weight loss, Thus, TNFalpha may be an important circulating cytokine, which may provide a potentially reversible mechanism for mediating insulin resistance.  相似文献

Coatings of CuO and Co3O4 on polished nickel, silver, and platinum have high absorptivity for solar radiation and low emissivity in the infrared when heated. The ability of bifidobacteria isolated from infant feces to inhibit enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli serotype O157:H7 in vitro and reduce its adhesion to human enterocyte-like Caco-2 cells was evaluated in comparison to American Type Culture Collection bifidobacterial reference strains. Five Bifidobacterium isolates from infant feces were identified and characterized by morphology, fructose-6-phosphate phosphoketolase (F6PPK) assay, polymerase chain reaction using bifidobacterial 16S rDNA specific primers, carbohydrate fermentation patterns, resistance to lysozyme, acid, bile and hydrogen peroxide as well as their ability to inhibit E. coli O157:H7 using the agar spot technique. Infant isolates showed greater resistance to bile, acid, lysozyme and more antimicrobial activity against E. coli O157:H7 than ATCC strains. Two infant isolates identified as B. bifidum RBL 71 and B. bifidum RBL 460 showed good adhesion and significant potential for reducing adhesion of E. coli O157:H7 to Caco-2 cells. This effect was dependent on bifidobacterial cell concentration. These results show that bifidobacteria isolated from infants may be useful for improving probiotic formulae with respect to protection against E. coli O157:H7 infection.  相似文献

Eccentrically loaded concrete encased steel composite columns   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper presents a nonlinear 3-D finite element model for eccentrically loaded concrete encased steel composite columns. The columns were pin-ended subjected to an eccentric load acting along the major axis, with eccentricity varied from 0.125 to 0.375 of the overall depth (D) of the column sections. The model accounted for the inelastic behaviour of steel, concrete, longitudinal and transverse reinforcement bars as well as the effect of concrete confinement of the concrete encased steel composite columns. The interface between the steel section and concrete, the longitudinal and transverse reinforcement bars, and the reinforcement bars and concrete were also considered allowing the bond behaviour to be modelled and the different components to retain its profile during the deformation of the column. The initial overall geometric imperfection was carefully incorporated in the model. The finite element model has been validated against existing test results. The concrete strengths varied from normal to high strength (30–110 MPa). The steel section yield stresses also varied from normal to high strength (275–690 MPa). Furthermore, the variables that influence the eccentrically loaded composite column behaviour and strength comprising different eccentricities, different column dimensions, different structural steel sizes, different concrete strengths, and different structural steel yield stresses were investigated in a parametric study. Generally, it is shown that the effect on the composite column strength owing to the increase in structural steel yield stress is significant for eccentrically loaded columns with small eccentricity of 0.125D. On the other hand, for columns with higher eccentricity 0.375D, the effect on the composite column strength due to the increase in structural steel yield stress is significant for columns with concrete strengths lower than 70 MPa. The strength of composite columns obtained from the finite element analysis were compared with the design strengths calculated using the Eurocode 4 for composite columns. Generally, it is shown that the EC4 accurately predicted the eccentrically loaded composite columns, while overestimated the moment.  相似文献

Continuous concrete beams are structural elements commonly used in structures that might be exposed to extreme weather conditions and the application of deicing salts, such as bridge overpasses and parking garages. In such structures, reinforcing continuous concrete beams with the noncorrodible fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars is beneficial to avoid steel corrosion. However, the linear-elastic behavior of FRP materials makes the ability of continuous beams to redistribute loads and moments questionable. A total of seven full-scale continuous concrete beams were tested to failure. Six beams were reinforced with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) longitudinal bars, whereas one was reinforced with steel as control. The specimens have rectangular cross section of 200×300??mm and are continuous over two spans of 2,800?mm each. Both steel and GFRP stirrups were used as transverse reinforcement. The material, spacing, and amount of transverse reinforcement were the primary investigated parameters in this study. In addition, the experimental results were compared with the code equations to calculate the ultimate capacity. The experimental results showed that moment redistribution in FRP-reinforced continuous concrete beams is possible and is improved by increasing the amount of transverse reinforcement. Also, beams reinforced with GFRP stirrups illustrated similar performance compared with their steel-reinforced counterparts.  相似文献
