The resonant-mass gravitational wave detector NAUTILUS has recently recorded signals due to cosmic rays crossing. Very large signals have been observed in the superconductive state of the antenna. In order to investigate this anomalous response at low temperatures, the Rivelazione Acustica di Particelle experiment has been approved. Its purpose is the measurement of the mechanical vibrations in a superconducting (T100 mK) cylindrical aluminium bar when hit by 105 electrons at 510 MeV from the DAΦNE Beam Test Facility, corresponding to the energies released by extensive air showers in the NAUTILUS antenna. The results of this measurement are crucial to understand the interaction of ionizing particles with bulk superconductors and to confirm the results on the thermo-acoustic model of the past experiments. 相似文献

The aim of the study was to assess the seasonal variability of non-specific bronchial reactivity (NSBR) evaluated with methacholine in asthmatic farmers allergic to pollens. Twenty farmers (16 male and four female) with allergy to pollens, e.g. 'Graminae' and 'Parietaria', entered the study. None of the patients had been previously treated with specific immunotherapy. Patients underwent a methacholine challenge at the first visit and then in the subsequent seasons. Four groups of tests were obtained according to the period when the challenge was performed. Group 1: challenges performed in December, January and February; group 2 in March, April and May; group 3 in June, July and August; group 4 in September, October and November. PD20 values were expressed as the natural logarithm of the cumulative dose of methacholine causing at least a 20% fall in FEV1. Bronchial hyperreactivity was highest in summer, followed by spring and autumn; in winter it was much lower. Multiple group analysis (ANOVA) showed statistically significant differences between the groups (P < 0.01). When the groups were compared individually, statistically significant differences existed only between group 1 (winter) and each of the other groups, respectively 2 (spring) (P = 0.02), 3 (summer) (P = 0.004) and 4 (autumn) (P = 0.02). The results underlined the importance of allergic inflammation in determining changes in NSBR. In the region where the study was carried out (central Italy), the grass and Paretaria pollination lasts from March to November. Therefore, farmers had a progressive increase in NSBR from spring to summer and a decrease in fall as a consequence of the varying pollen concentration in different seasons. The level of allergen exposure is, in fact, the main factor that determines the severity of bronchial inflammation, thus affecting NSBR. 相似文献

As proximal nerves are relatively spared in length-dependent, axonal polyneuropathy, we theorized that a sural/radial amplitude ratio (SRAR) might be a sensitive indicator of mild polyneuropathy. In this study, sural amplitudes and SRARs in patients with signs of mild axonal polyneuropathy were compared to those of normal, age-matched control subjects. Sural and radial sensory responses were measured in a standard fashion in all subjects. Thirty polyneuropathy patients had an average SRAR of 0.29 as compared to 0.71 for the 30 normal subjects. An SRAR of less than 0.40 was a strong predictor of axonal polyneuropathy, with 90% sensitivity and 90% specificity, as compared to an absolute sural amplitude of less than 6.0 microV, which had sensitivity of only 66%. Additionally, unlike the sural amplitude, the ratio did not vary significantly with age. We conclude that the SRAR is a sensitive, specific, age-independent electrodiagnostic test for mild axonal polyneuropathy. 相似文献

Acrylate functionalities were grafted at the surface of carbon fibers in order to improve the adhesion strength with an acrylate matrix cured by electron beam. An isocyanate bearing aliphatic urethane acrylate was used as a coupling agent. As revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the isocyanate groups reacted with carboxylic acids and hydroxyl groups located at the surface of the fiber, leading to a covalent bonding of the acrylate groups. The adhesion strength was measured by a micromechanical test derived from the pull-out test. A significant improvement of the interfacial shear strength was obtained (+91%) with an electron beam curing. For comparison, an isothermal cure by UV was also investigated and led to the same level of adhesion strength. The improvement was also proved by an increase in the 90° flexural strength of unidirectional composites (+38%). Grafting functionalities that were compatible with the radical mechanism of the polymerization of the matrix appeared to be a promising strategy for the improvement of the mechanical properties of carbon fiber–acrylate composites cured by electron beam. 相似文献

A new farm economic typology has recently been introduced in the EU. This study compares the economic performance of wine-grape growers in four important quality wine areas of Sicily taking into account the different EU economic typology standards of standard gross margin (the old method) and standard output (the new method). The objective of this study is to identify the differences between the two methods and to ascertain the potential implications for small wine-grape growers’ profitability and their access to public support. We seek to determine whether restrictions can be identified that limit the potential benefits from rural development policies.
For this purpose, we applied the economic criteria of the EU to a representative sample of Sicilian wine-grape growers in order to compare the economic profitability of wine-grape farms in protected designation of origin areas. This comparative approach has allowed us to categorize the economic size of the sample in accordance with recent EU modifications and discuss the possible impacts that the adoption of the new economic criteria would have on access to the Rural Development Programme measures for wine-grape growers. 相似文献

Connexin (Cx) hemichannels (HCs) are large pore hexameric structures that allow the exchange of ions, metabolites and a variety of other molecules between the cell cytoplasm and extracellular milieu. HC inhibitors are attracting growing interest as drug candidates because deregulated fluxes through HCs have been implicated in a plethora of genetic conditions and other diseases. HC activity has been mainly investigated by electrophysiological methods and/or using HC-permeable dye uptake measurements. Here, we present an all-optical assay based on fluorometric measurements of ionized calcium (Ca2+) uptake with a Ca2+-selective genetically encoded indicator (GCaMP6s) that permits the optical tracking of cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]cyt) changes with high sensitivity. We exemplify use of the assay in stable pools of HaCaT cells overexpressing human Cx26, Cx46, or the pathological mutant Cx26G45E, under control of a tetracycline (Tet) responsive element (TRE) promoter (Tet-on). We demonstrate the usefulness of the assay for the characterization of new monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) targeting the extracellular domain of the HCs. Although we developed the assay on a spinning disk confocal fluorescence microscope, the same methodology can be extended seamlessly to high-throughput high-content platforms to screen other kinds of inhibitors and/or to probe HCs expressed in primary cells and microtissues. 相似文献
