Fractionation of asphalt materials by using supercritical cyclohexane and pentane has been successfully conducted. Each of three asphalts was fractionated into ten fractions. These asphalts and their fractions were then characterized by a variety of analyses including Corbett chromatographic separation, infrared analysis, refractive index- and intrinsic viscosity-size exclusion chromatography (gel permeation chromatography), and elemental analysis by atomic absorption. The fractions were then reblended to produce materials of typical asphalt consistency. These blends were then subjected to oxidative aging in a pressure oxidation vessel and were found, in some cases, to have improved aging characteristics in the sense that they did not harden in response to a given carbonyl formation (oxidation) as much as normal asphalt materials. Hence, the supercritical fractionation technique is considered to have great potential for producing improved asphalt materials.  相似文献

A method for generating olfactory stimuli for humans within a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experimental design is described. The system incorporates a nasal-mask in which the change from odorant to no-odorant conditions occurs in less than 500 ms and is not accompanied by visual, auditory, tactile, or thermal cues. The mask provides an ordorant-free environment following prolonged ordorant presence. Specific imaging parameters that are conducive to the study of the human olfactory system are described. In a pilot study performed using these methods, the specific patterns of activation observed converged with published experimental and clinical findings.  相似文献

Two methods of endotracheal intubation of patients lying on the ground were compared for ease and speed of intubation and minimization of complications in a crossover study of prehospital-oriented emergency physicians. Intubation of a mannequin was attempted by the physicians in either a left lateral decubitus (LLD) position or a kneeling (K) position, followed by the alternate position. The LLD position afforded more rapid intubation, better glottic visualization, and less dental trauma. Eighty-seven percent of physicians completely visualized the glottis in the LLD position, versus 33% of the K position group. Intubation times were 10.5 versus 14.6 seconds in the LLD and K positions, respectively (P < .001). The LLD position is a more effective position (in a mannequin model) than the K position for intubation of patients found lying on the ground, a frequent situation in prehospital care.  相似文献

The design and operating characteristics of a dye laser pumped by a 3-W copper-vapor laser (CVL) and injection seeded by low-power (1-5 mW) He-Ne lasers at 633 nm are reported. An extremely simple optical arrangement is used wherein the output mirror of the He-Ne laser and a third mirror form the dye laser cavity. Laser efficiency in fixed-wavelength operation has been investigated for variable CVL pump power, He-Ne injection power and polarization, and cavity output coupling for a standard Rhodamine 590/Rhodamine 640 dye solution. Over 90% of free-running (unseeded) laser power is obtained in fixed-wavelength (seeded) operation at low CVL pump powers (≤1 W), dropping to approximately 60% at 3-W pump power. Maximum CVL pump to dye laser optical conversion efficiency in narrow-band, fixed-wavelength operation at 633 nm was 12%.  相似文献

Scatter search and genetic algorithms have originated from somewhat different traditions and perspectives, yet exhibit features that are strongly complementary. Links between the approaches have increased in recent years as variants of genetic algorithms have been introduced that embody themes in closer harmony with those of scatter search. Some researchers are now beginning to take advantage of these connections by identifying additional ways to incorporate elements of scatter search into genetic algorithm approaches. There remain aspects of the scatter approach that have not been exploited in conjunction with genetic algorithms, yet that provide ways to achieve goals that are basic to the genetic algorithm design. Part of the gap in implementing hybrids of these procedures may derive from relying too literally on the genetic metaphor, which in its narrower interpretation does not readily accommodate the strategic elements underlying scatter search. The theme of this paper is to show there are benefits to be gained by going beyond a perspective constrained too tightly by the connotations of the term genetic. We show that the scatter search framework directly leads to processes for combining solutions that exhibit special properties for exploiting combinatorial optimization problems. In the setting of zero-one integer programming, we identify a mapping that gives new ways to create combined solutions, producing constructions calledstar-paths for exploring the zero-one solution space. Star-path trajectories have the special property of lying within regions assured to include optimal solutions. They also can be exploited in association with both cutting plane and extreme point solution approaches. These outcomes motivate a deeper look into current conceptions of appropriate ways to combine solutions, and disclose there are more powerful methods to derive information from these combinations than those traditionally applied.This research is supported in part by the Joint Air Force Office of Scientific Research and Office of Naval Research Contract No. F49620-90-C-0033 at the University of Colorado  相似文献

The estimation of orientation distribution functions (ODFs) from discrete orientation data, as produced by electron backscatter diffraction or crystal plasticity micromechanical simulations, is typically achieved via techniques such as the Williams–Imhof–Matthies–Vinel (WIMV) algorithm or generalized spherical harmonic expansions, which were originally developed for computing an ODF from pole figures measured by X-ray or neutron diffraction. These techniques rely on ad-hoc methods for choosing parameters, such as smoothing half-width and bandwidth, and for enforcing positivity constraints and appropriate normalization. In general, such approaches provide little or no information-theoretic guarantees as to their optimality in describing the given dataset. In the current study, an unsupervised learning algorithm is proposed which uses a finite mixture of Bingham distributions for the estimation of ODFs from discrete orientation data. The Bingham distribution is an antipodally-symmetric, max-entropy distribution on the unit quaternion hypersphere. The proposed algorithm also introduces a minimum message length criterion, a common tool in information theory for balancing data likelihood with model complexity, to determine the number of components in the Bingham mixture. This criterion leads to ODFs which are less likely to overfit (or underfit) the data, eliminating the need for a priori parameter choices.  相似文献

The construction industry relies on skilled craft workers supplied through various training programs. Based on a nationwide survey of industry experts regarding craft training programs, this paper examines the current state and effectiveness of construction craft training via 93 respondents from a wide range of U.S. industrial and commercial construction firms and associated craft training centers. The study’s survey data allowed the writers to examine the major issues regarding craft training, such as the relative importance of basic core topics, training completion rates, the relation between trades’ engagement and training, and the barriers of advancing craft training in construction. The paper also uses the experts’ responses to estimate the benefits of craft training on productivity, turnover, absenteeism, safety, and rework. Various statistical methods are used to support the analysis. Problems are identified in craft training among the training programs examined and potential solutions for improving craft training effectiveness are suggested.  相似文献

The "testing" phenomenon refers to the finding that students who take a test on material between the time they first study and the time they take a final test remember more of the material than students who do not take an intervening test. 4 experiments examined the testing phenomenon in student's memory for brief passages and labels for parts of flowers. Experiments 1a and 1b demonstrated the generality of the phenomenon to the methods and materials used in the current study. Experiment 2 ruled out an "amount of processing" hypothesis as a way of accounting for the testing phenomenon. The results of Experiment 3 seemed to indicate that the testing phenomenon resided in the number of complete retrieval events. Experiments 4a, 4b, and 4c focused on the completeness of retrieval events and indicated that the influence of retrieval on later memory performance was determined, at least in part, by the completeness of the initial retrieval event.
