The showup, or presentation of a single suspect to an eyewitness, is widely believed to be a more biased and suggestive identification procedure than the lineup even though there has been no empirical work on this issue. Results suggest, however, that witnesses at a lineup are less likely to say "not there" than are witnesses at a showup. This tendency is seen in both live and photographic identification procedures, in both laboratory studies and real-world identifications. Showups in the lab resulted in no more mistaken identifications than lineups. Results also suggest that a showup is not equivalent to a poor lineup (i.e., a lineup with a functional size of 1). It is hypothesized that a showup leads to an absolute judgment, whereas a lineup leads to a relative judgment, and that the police pressures on witnesses are unlikely to be any greater for showup than for lineup identifications. Neurons located in the trigeminal sensory complex (TSC) and the lateral pontine tegmentum (LPT) have been reported to project to both the accessory abducens and the facial nuclei, which innervate the retractor bulbi and orbicularis oculi muscles respectively, in order to control the nictitating membrane (NM) and eyelid defensive reflex. Since muscles innervated by the oculomotor nucleus (OCM) also appear to be involved in this reflex, retrograde and anterograde tracers were used in this study to determine whether there are projections from the TSC and LPT to the OCM in the rabbit. Injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in the OCM nucleus labeled neurons in the LPT surrounding the trigeminal motor nucleus dorsally, laterally and ventrally. Only a few scattered neurons were found in the principal and spinal trigeminal nuclei. Injection of biocytin in the LPT area containing most of the HRP-labeled neurons caused anterograde labeling of fibers that crossed the midline and ascended just dorsal to the contralateral medial lemniscus. A proportion of these fibers coursed in a dorsal direction to enter and terminate within the OCM contralateral to the injection site. The location of the motoneuronal groups innervating the different extraocular muscles was studied by retrograde transport of HRP, and compared with the distribution of biocytin-labeled terminals. It was found that the terminals were located in the superior rectus and the levator palpebrae zone of the nucleus. We discuss the functional significance of this projection for the eyelid and NM response.  相似文献

The launch of the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) instrument onboard the Meteostat 8 allows a diurnal sampling of the Earth's Radiation Budget for the first time, providing a unique and important addition to polar-orbiting measurements. However, preliminary data from the GERB instrument exhibit systematic asymmetry in the short-wave (SW) flux diurnal variation. Such asymmetries are not found in the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System angular distribution models used to convert the directional broad-band GERB SW radiances to fluxes. Comparison between angularly matched estimations of reflected SW flux at the top of the atmosphere from the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infra Red Imager (SEVIRI) and GERB data indicates that the SEVIRI spectral modeling could be a major issue. In addition, the results indicate that other factors such as the GERB SW geolocation, the GERB detector spectral response functions, the GERB nominal footprint resolution, and cloud cover could also potentially have an influence on the diurnal evolution of the GERB SW fluxes, as they can erroneously impact on the GERB SW correction factor  相似文献

Kinetic equations derived from surface renewal and eddy diffusivity theories for fast and instantaneous kinetic regimes of absorption have been applied to the results of the ozonation of 1,3-cyclohexanedione (CYC) in water. This has allowed the determination of the rate constant of the direct reaction of ozone with CYC and the liquid phase volumetric mass transfer coefficient of the system. The results obtained are close to those reported in the preceding paper (SOTELO et al., 1991) when using the film theory. However, the ozone partial pressure necessary to reach the instantaneous kinetic regime is higher for the case of the theories applied in this work.  相似文献

The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values were compared for six methods of collecting or culturing milk samples for the diagnosis of chronic Streptococcus agalactiae intramammary infection. Cows in four dairy herds were cultured three times in 2 wk to determine infection status. At the second sample period, individual quarter and composite milk samples were taken before and immediately after milking, and two volumes of milk from the composite samples were streaked on culture plates. The sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values for these cultures ranged between 95 and 100% for all diagnostic methods, and no significant differences were found between methods. The results indicate that when either quarter or composite samples are collected before or immediately after milking, 95 to 100% of S. agalactiae culture-positive cows will be infected with S. agalactiae in herds with a prevalence of S. agalactiae between 35 and 55%. A similar proportion of culture-negative cows will be uninfected.  相似文献
