The complexity of new information technologies (IT) may limit the access of elderly people to the information society, exacerbating what is known as “the digital divide,” as they appear to be too challenging for elderly citizens regardless of the integrity of their cognitive status. This study is an attempt to clarify how some cognitive functions (such as attention or verbal memory) may determine the interaction of cognitively impaired elderly people with technology. Twenty participants ranging from mild cognitive impairment to moderate Alzheimer’s disease were assessed by means of a neuropsychological and functional battery and were asked to follow simple commands from an avatar appearing on a TV by means of a remote control, such as asking the participant to confirm their presence or to respond Yes/No to a proposal to see a TV program. The number of correct answers and command repetitions required for the user to respond were registered. The results show that participants with a better cognitive and functional state in specific tests show a significantly better performance in the TV task. The derived conclusion is that neuropsychological assessment may be used as a useful complementary tool for assistive technology developers in the adaptation of IT to the elderly with different cognitive and functional profiles. Further studies with larger samples are required to determine to what extent cognitive functions can actually predict older users’ interaction with technology.  相似文献

Self-sustained oscillations obtained during the catalytic oxidation of CO and H2 were studied over Rh/SiO2 by an FTIR-mass spectrometric technique. An average oscillatory period of 7.1±0.5 minutes was obtained for the CO/O2 reaction at 348 K. For the H2/O2 oscillatory reaction the period was observed to be 1.3±0.8 minutes. When the oscillations were coupled at the same temperature, the period for both the CO/O2 and the H2/O2 reactions was observed to be 7.9±0.8 minutes. The kinetic coupling of the reaction rates is explained by considering the periodic fluctuations in surface temperature which occur as a result of the more exothermic CO/O2 reaction.  相似文献

While search engines have been a successful tool to search text information, image search systems still face challenges. The keyword-based query paradigm used to search in image collection systems, which has been successful in text retrieval, may not be useful in scenarios where the user does not have the precise way to express a visual query. Image collection exploration is a new paradigm where users interact with the image collection to discover useful and relevant pictures. This paper proposes a framework for the construction of an image collection exploration system based on kernel methods, which offers a mathematically strong basis to address each stage of an image collection exploration system: image representation, summarization, visualization and interaction. In particular, our approach emphasizes a semantic representation of images using kernel functions, which can be seamlessly harnessed across all system components. Experiments were conducted with real users to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed strategy.  相似文献

A submersible microbial fuel cell (SMFC) was utilized to treat sewage sludge and simultaneously generate electricity. Stable power generation (145 +/- 5 mW/m2, 470 omega) was produced continuously from raw sewage sludge for 5.5 days. The maximum power density reached 190 +/- 5 mW/m2. The corresponding total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) removal efficiency was 78.1 +/- 0.2% with initial TCOD of 49.7 g/L. The power generation of SMFC was depended on the sludge concentration, while dilution of the raw sludge resulted in higher power density. The maximum power density was saturated at sludge concentration of 17 g-TCOD/L, where 290 mw/m2 was achieved. When effluents from an anaerobic digester that was fed with raw sludge were used as substrate in the SMFC, a maximum power density of 318 mW/m2, and a final TCOD removal of 71.9 +/- 0.2% were achieved. These results have practical implications for development of an effective system to treat sewage sludge and simultaneously recover energy.  相似文献

With the use of in vivo fluorescence microscopy we have analyzed microvascular reperfusion injury of small bowel isograft transplants in rats. Following 1 hr cold storage in University of Wisconsin solution, the small bowel was transplanted heterotopically, and the intestinal microcirculation was quantitatively analyzed 20-60 min after onset of reperfusion. The intestinal grafts' capillary perfusion of both the mucosa and the circular and longitudinal muscles was not found altered when compared with the intestinal capillary perfusion of sham-operated controls. In contrast, leukocyte-endothelial cell interaction, including leukocyte rolling (40 +/- 5%) and sticking (280 +/- 100 mm-2) in submucosal postcapillary venules, was significantly increased when compared with nontransplanted controls (12 +/- 8% and 20 +/- 10 mm-2, P < 0.01 and P < 0.05, respectively). Leukocyte-endothelial cell interaction was associated with a marked alteration of lymphatic capillary drainage, as indicated by the low functional density of lymphatic microvessels of 10.2 +/- 6.1 cm-1 (P < 0.01 vs. sham-operated controls (39.2 +/- 6.1 cm-1)). From these results we propose that leukocyte-endothelial cell interaction, not capillary "no-reflow," is the primary step in the manifestation of microvascular reperfusion injury following a short period of cold ischemia in small bowel grafts.  相似文献

Greenhouse gas inventories and emissions reduction programs require robust methods to quantify carbon sequestration in forests. We compare forest carbon estimates from Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar) data and QuickBird high-resolution satellite images, calibrated and validated by field measurements of individual trees. We conducted the tests at two sites in California: (1) 59 km2 of secondary and old-growth coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) forest (Garcia-Mailliard area) and (2) 58 km2 of old-growth Sierra Nevada forest (North Yuba area). Regression of aboveground live tree carbon density, calculated from field measurements, against Lidar height metrics and against QuickBird-derived tree crown diameter generated equations of carbon density as a function of the remote sensing parameters. Employing Monte Carlo methods, we quantified uncertainties of forest carbon estimates from uncertainties in field measurements, remote sensing accuracy, biomass regression equations, and spatial autocorrelation. Validation of QuickBird crown diameters against field measurements of the same trees showed significant correlation (r = 0.82, P < 0.05). Comparison of stand-level Lidar height metrics with field-derived Lorey's mean height showed significant correlation (Garcia-Mailliard r = 0.94, P < 0.0001; North Yuba R = 0.89, P < 0.0001). Field measurements of five aboveground carbon pools (live trees, dead trees, shrubs, coarse woody debris, and litter) yielded aboveground carbon densities (mean ± standard error without Monte Carlo) as high as 320 ± 35 Mg ha− 1 (old-growth coast redwood) and 510 ± 120 Mg ha− 1 (red fir [Abies magnifica] forest), as great or greater than tropical rainforest. Lidar and QuickBird detected aboveground carbon in live trees, 70-97% of the total. Large sample sizes in the Monte Carlo analyses of remote sensing data generated low estimates of uncertainty. Lidar showed lower uncertainty and higher accuracy than QuickBird, due to high correlation of biomass to height and undercounting of trees by the crown detection algorithm. Lidar achieved uncertainties of < 1%, providing estimates of aboveground live tree carbon density (mean ± 95% confidence interval with Monte Carlo) of 82 ± 0.7 Mg ha− 1 in Garcia-Mailliard and 140 ± 0.9 Mg ha− 1 in North Yuba. The method that we tested, combining field measurements, Lidar, and Monte Carlo, can produce robust wall-to-wall spatial data on forest carbon.  相似文献

Three-dimensional (3D) representations of complex geometric shapes, especially when they are reconstructed from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) data, often result in large polygon meshes which require substantial storage for their handling, and normally have only one fixed level of detail (LOD). This can often be an obstacle for efficient data exchange and interactive work with such objects. We propose to replace such large polygon meshes with a relatively small set of coefficients of the patchwise partial differential equation (PDE) function representation. With this model, the approximations of the original shapes can be rendered with any desired resolution at interactive rates. Our approach can directly work with any common 3D reconstruction pipeline, which we demonstrate by applying it to a large reconstructed medical data set with irregular geometry.  相似文献

This paper shows that breaking the barrier of 1 triangle/clock rasterization rate for microtriangles in modern GPU architectures in an efficient way is possible. The fixed throughput of the special purpose culling and triangle setup stages of the classic pipeline limits the GPU scalability to rasterize many triangles in parallel when these cover very few pixels. In contrast, the shader core counts and increasing GFLOPs in modern GPUs clearly suggests parallelizing this computation entirely across multiple shader threads, making use of the powerful wide-ALU instructions. In this paper, we present a very efficient SIMD-like rasterization code targeted at very small triangles that scales very well with the number of shader cores and has higher performance than traditional edge equation based algorithms. We have extended the ATTILA GPU shader ISA (del Barrioet al. in IEEE International Symposium on Performance Analysis of Systems and Software, pp. 231–241, 2006) with two fixed point instructions to meet the rasterization precision requirement. This paper also introduces a novel subpixel Bounding Box size optimization that adjusts the bounds much more finely, which is critical for small triangles, and doubles the 2×2-pixel stamp test efficiency. The proposed shader rasterization program can run on top of the original pixel shader program in such a way that selected fragments are rasterized, attribute interpolated and pixel shaded in the same pass. Our results show that our technique yields better performance than a classic rasterizer at 8 or more shader cores, with speedups as high as 4× for 16 shader cores.  相似文献

Autonomous robots are leaving the laboratories to master new outdoor applications, and walking robots in particular have already shown their potential advantages in these environments, especially on a natural terrain. Gait generation is the key to success in the negotiation of natural terrain with legged robots; however, most of the algorithms devised for hexapods have been tested under laboratory conditions. This paper presents the development of crab and turning gaits for hexapod robots on a natural terrain characterized by containing uneven ground and forbidden zones. The gaits we have developed rely on two empirical rules that derive three control modules that have been tested both under simulation and by experiment. The geometrical model of the SILO-6 walking robot has been used for simulation purposes, while the real SILO-6 walking robot has been used in the experiments. This robot was built as a mobile platform for a sensory system to detect and locate antipersonnel landmines in humanitarian demining missions.  相似文献
