In previous work, we have shown that a set of characteristics, defined as (code frequency) pairs, can be derived from a protein family by the use of a signal-processing method. This method enables the location and extraction of sequence patterns by taking into account each (code frequency) pair individually. In the present paper, we propose to extend this method in order to detect and visualize patterns by taking into account several pairs simultaneously. Two 'multifrequency' methods are described. The first one is based on a rewriting of the sequences with new symbols which summarize the frequency information. The second method is based on a clustering of the patterns associated with each pair. Both methods lead to the definition of significant consensus sequences. Some results obtained with calcium-binding proteins and serine proteases are also discussed. 相似文献

The performance of step index up-tapers subjected to certain index perturbations in investigated by computer simulation. Concentric symmetric and asymmetric index profile perturbations as well as localized spherical, called regions bubbles, having a different index are studied. It is found that some low-valued perturbations of small scale size (less than a wavelength) do not alter the optical fiber performance. However, the amount of beam expansion in the up-taper may be ultimately limited by such perturbations. Excessive magnification in the presence of perturbations can cause a distortion of the quasi-Gaussian shape and symmetry of the pure step-index fundamental mode as well as increase the excess loss and degrade the lateral and axial displacement tolerance improvements of the up-tapers. For example, an index variation of Δn ≈10-5 in conjunction with a perturbation scale size of 40 μm can be detrimental. Bubble-type perturbations could also cause similar problems. A single 12.8-μm-diameter bubble with a relative index of -0.02, embedded in a 128-μm-diameter step index core with relative index of 0.5%, produced a 0.3-dB excess loss 相似文献

A model concept for prediction of sulfide buildup in sewer networks is presented. The model concept is an extension to--and a further development of--the WATS model (Wastewater Aerobic-anaerobic Transformations in Sewers), which has been developed by Hvitved-Jacobsen and co-workers at Aalborg University. In addition to the sulfur cycle, the WATS model simulates changes in dissolved oxygen and carbon fractions of different biodegradability. The sulfur cycle was introduced via six processes: 1. sulfide production taking place in the biofilm covering the permanently wetted sewer walls; 2. biological sulfide oxidation in the permanently wetted biofilm; 3. chemical and biological sulfide oxidation in the water phase; 4. sulfide precipitation with metals present in the wastewater; 5. emission of hydrogen sulfide to the sewer atmosphere and 6. adsorption and oxidation of hydrogen sulfide on the moist sewer walls where concrete corrosion may take place. 相似文献

This paper describes a highly digitized direct conversion receiver of a single-chip quadruple-band RF transceiver that meets GSM/GPRS and EDGE requirements. The chip uses an advanced 0.25-/spl mu/m BiCMOS technology. The I and Q on-chip fifth-order single-bit continuous-time sigma-delta (/spl Sigma//spl Delta/) ADC has 84-dB dynamic range over a total bandwidth of /spl plusmn/135 kHz for an active area of 0.4 mm/sup 2/. Hence, most of the channel filtering is realized in a CMOS IC where digital processing is achieved at a lower cost. The systematic analysis of dc offset at each stage of the design enables to perform the dc offset cancellation loop in the digital domain as well. The receiver operates at 2.7 V with a current consumption of 75 mA. A first-order substrate coupling analysis enables to optimize the floor plan strategy. Measuring the noise generated by a pulsed RF amplifier is not a simple task [1]. One method of making this measurement converts the RF pulse to video with a phase detector and uses a spectrum analyzer to measure the noise between the lines of the pulse spectrum. The measurement includes the combined effects of timing jitter, power-supply modulation, and amplifier noise. An alternate method, described in this note, requires less test equipment by using an RF spectrum analyzer to measure the noise at a point outside the pulse spectrum. This measurement responds only to amplifier noise and is valid if the noise density is the same both inside and outside the pulse spectrum. Since this situation tends to be true of broad-band amplifiers such as TWT's and CFA's, the second method is preferable because of its relative simplicity. This note describes the procedure for measuring pulsed amplifier noise using an RF spectrum analyzer. The test setup and measurement procedure are described, as well as the conversion of the measured spectral-density ratio to an equivalent CW signal-to-noise ratio. 相似文献

Physical principles governing mine ventilation systems and state of the art ventilation modeling are initially outlined. Several computer programs for modeling the mine ventilation-mine fire interaction, which were developed during the last decade, are then described. An older program considers fires and ventilation systems as going through a sequence of steady state conditions. Airflow rates, pressure losses, temperatures, fume and methane concentrations can be determined. Newer programs allow transient state fume concentration calculations under the assumption of constant airflow rates as well as the determination of fume exposures of escaping miners. It is well known that giant magnetoresistive (GMR) heads used for hard disk drives (HDD) are very sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). In this paper, we describe a method of categorizing ESD damage modes from a standpoint of magnetic influences on the heads as observed by quasi-static test (QST) characteristics as well as electromagnetic characteristics like off-track profiles. In addition, we report an example of GMR stack interlayer diffusion which is one type of hard ESD damage.
