The photosynthesis, transfer, and storage of starch are the most important biogenic processes occurring in plants. In order to observe the colorless and transparent starch granules in a plant, a chemical pretreatment such as staining of the starch is currently required, which seriously damages the tissue cells in the plant. We demonstrate that nondestructive chemical analysis of starch granules in a plant can be performed by using optical second-harmonic and sum-frequency microscopy. These techniques for in vivo analysis will provide extremely useful information about saccharides in a plant and can be extended to the analysis of many other materials, from living tissue to semiconductors.  相似文献

A new fossil‐fuel‐utilized high‐performance combined power generation system with liquefaction recovery of carbon dioxide is proposed. In the system, pure oxygen is used as the oxidant gas to prevent the mixture of nitrogen in the exhaust gas and to make the liquefaction recovery of carbon dioxide possible. Solid oxide fuel cell is selected as the topping cycle. The exhaust fuel gas of the solid oxide fuel cell is afterburned with its exhaust oxidant gas of pure oxygen and the heat of the combustion gas is utilized in the bottoming cycle. Nonequilibrium MHD/noble gas turbine cycle is selected as the bottoming cycle because the temperature of the combustion gas reaches about 2300 K. It is made clear through detailed examination of energy balance that the total thermal efficiency of the system using natural gas (methane) as the fuel reaches 63.24% (HHV) or 70.18% (LHV). This efficiency is very high as for the system with carbon dioxide recovery. The proposed system, therefore, has excellent performance, and further research and development is warranted. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This review focuses on the enzymes involved in two microbial carbon dioxide fixation pathways, the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle and the reductive tricarboxylic acid cycle. The function, structural features, and gene regulation of microbial ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), a key enzyme of the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle, is described. Some recent findings on Rubisco from archaea and Rubisco-like proteins are also outlined. In the final section, biochemical features of the key enzymes in the reductive tricarboxylic acid cycle are reviewed.  相似文献

Inverse gas chromatography (i.g.c.) of columns prepared with a polymer blend of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and polystyrene (PS) in the presence of pulverized porous inorganic materials has been studied. Information on the inorganics-polymer interaction was obtained from the change in the Z-shaped curve observed in the retention diagram. Inorganic materials except active carbon selectively incorporated PEO into their pores. The incorporation ability increased with increasing surface area of inorganic material. Molecular sieve 5A was scarcely able to incorporate PEO into its pores in spite of its large surface area, and this was ascribed to its small pore diameter. Active carbon selectively incorporated PS into its pores. Irreversible adsorption of a solute on active carbon was a dominant process in i.g.c. measurement for the column prepared with polymer and active carbon.  相似文献

Microcrystalline α-aluminas (hexagonal plates, ∼0.1 μm wide and ∼0.025 μm thick) were prepared by treating fineparticle gibbsite in glycol at 300°C under the spontaneous vapor pressure of glycol (glycothermal treatment). The crystal and defect structures of coarse-grained crystals of La(2/3-x)Li(3x)TiO3 grown from the melt by the Tammann-St?ber method were studied by transmission electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. The as-grown crystals of La(2/3-x)Li(3x)TiO3 have a Li-poor composition of La(0.57)Li(0.29)TiO3 and a diagonal-type unit cell of 2(1/2)a(p) x 2(1/2)a(p) x 2a(p) with the tetragonal symmetry [space group: P4/nbm (#125)] due to both the La-cation ordering and the tilting of TiO6 octahedra. The secondary La2Ti2O7 phase precipitates in the form of plates in the La(2/3-x)Li(3x)TiO3 phase with the orientation relationships of 001(p)//[100](La2Ti2O7) and {110}(p)//(001)(La2Ti2O7), which may cause detrimental effects to ionic conductivity.  相似文献

We investigated the planar covariation of lower limb segment elevation angles during bipedal walking in macaques to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the origin and evolution of the planar law in human walking. Two Japanese macaques and four adult humans walking on a treadmill were recorded, and the time course of the elevation angles at the thigh, shank and foot segments relative to the vertical axis were calculated. Our analyses indicated that the planar law also applies to macaque bipedal walking. However, planarity was much lower in macaques, and orientations of the plane differed between the two species because of differences in the foot elevation angle. The human foot is rigidly structured to form a longitudinal arch, whereas the macaque''s foot is more flexible and bends at the midtarsal region in the stance phase. This difference in midfoot flexibility between the two species studied was the main source of the difference in the planar law. Thus, the evolution of a stable midfoot in early hominins may have preceded the acquisition of the strong planar intersegmental coordination and possibly facilitated the subsequent emergence of habitual bipedal walking in the human lineage.  相似文献
