Strong correlations in two-dimensional quantum fluids of4He and3He adsorbed on hectorite

A theory for the high temperature superconductors is proposed. The dispersion of carriers in the 2D t-J model is calculated using numerical and analytical techniques, and compared with recent photoemission experimental results that reported a flat dispersion near the X and Y points. Good agreement is observed between theory and experiments. The density of states (DOS) of these dressed quasiparticles has a van Hove singularity. From the two carriers problem in an antiferromagnet, an effective Hamiltonian for holes is proposed. This effective model has superconductivity in the d_x ²–y² channel, a critical temperature T_c 100Kat the optimal hole density, x = 0.15, and a quasiparticle lifetime linearly dependent with energy. The appearance of an optimal concentration is a consequence of the van Hove singularity in the DOS. Other experimental results are also quantitatively reproduced by the theory. The present contribution is based on two recent papers by the authors (Phys. Rev. Lett.73, 728 (1994) and NHMFL preprint, July 1994).     

Broadband Tuning of a Continuous-Wave, Doubly Resonant, Lithium Triborate Optical Parametric Oscillator from 791 to 1620 nm

We report the use of extreme broadband, high reflectivity >99.5%, optical parametric oscillator (OPO) cavity mirrors. A continuous-wave, doubly resonant, OPO demonstrated tuning over a range of 791-1620 nm with a single mirror set. Wavelength tuning was performed by temperature tuning the nonlinear material of lithium triborate. Narrow linewidth oscillation was confirmed throughout the tuning range, and threshold pump power increased gradually from 50 mW near the degeneracy to 800 mW at the tuning band edge in a double-pass pumping configuration.     

Estimation of the surface velocity of debris flow with computer-based spatial filtering

A computer-based spatial-filtering velocimeter to measure the surface velocity of natural debris flow is described. This is a simple and interesting technique implemented with a spatial filter constructed as a software program that processes the video image of debris flow instead of a hardware implementation. The surface velocity of the debris flow at the Mt. Yakedake Volcano, Japan, was estimated by this computer-based spatial-filtering method, and the results were compared with those obtained by a hardware-based spatial-filtering method. Computer-based spatial filtering has the important advantage of a capability for tuning the spatial-filter parameters to the target flow.     

Use of the inferior epigastric artery for coronary artery bypass grafting: preoperative digital subtraction angiography

Between September 1994 and January 1995, the inferior epigastric artery (IEA) was used as a free graft for direct coronary artery bypass grafting in 4 patients. The IEA is excised from its origin from the external iliac artery as a pedicle with an "oval cuff" of 3 mm in diameter to facilitate the direct anastomosis with the aorta. The 4-week postoperative angiographic study showed that the IEA grafts were patent in all patients. We found that the IEA varies in length, diameter, and the pattern of branching between patients and between the right and left sides in the same patient. The preoperative digital subtraction angiography was useful for evaluating the suitability of IEA.     

Anisotropy in the resistive superconducting transition under magnetic fields in single crystal Pb2Sr2Ho0.5Ca0.5Cu3O8

Anisotropie properties of the single crystal Pb₂Sr₂Ho_0.5Ca_0.5Cu₃O₈ have been investigated by measuring the electrical resistivity in theab-planeρ _ab (H, θ,T), which depends on the angleθ between theab-plane and the magnetic-field direction, in various constant fieldsH perpendicular to the current direction. All the angle-dependent values ofρ _ab (H, θ,T) at a constant temperature are scaled to be on one curve as a function of reduced field. The anisotropic parameter γ≡(m _c ^* /m _ab ^* )^1/2 is estimated as 12–13, which is larger than that of YBa₂Cu₃O₇ and much smaller than that of Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O₈. It has been concluded that the anisotropy does not always depend on the thickness of the blocking layer but seems to depend on the overlap of the electronic wave functions along thec-axis. Anisotropy in the pinning potential has also been discussed from the resistive tail in the temperature dependence ofρ _ab (H,θ,T).     

Peroxiredoxin 2 as a chemotherapy responsiveness biomarker candidate in osteosarcoma revealed by proteomics

Purpose : We aimed to identify novel chemotherapy responsiveness biomarkers for osteosarcoma (OS) by investigating the global protein expression profile of 12 biopsy samples from OS patients. Experimental design : Six patients were classified as good responders and six as poor responders, according to the Huvos grading system. The protein expression profiles obtained by 2‐D DIGE consisted of 2250 protein spots. Results : Among them, we identified 55 protein spots whose intensity was significantly different (Bonferroni adjusted p‐value<0.01) between the two patient groups. Mass spectrometric protein identification demonstrated that the 55 spots corresponded to 38 distinct gene products including peroxiredoxin 2 (PRDX 2). Use of a specific antibody against PRDX 2 confirmed the differential expression of PRDX 2 between good and poor responders, while PRDX 2 levels as measured by Western blotting correlated highly with their corresponding 2‐D DIGE values. The predictive value of PRDX 2 expression was further confirmed by examining an additional four OS cases using Western blotting. Conclusions and clinical relevance : These results establish PRDX 2 as a candidate for chemotherapy responsiveness marker in OS. Measuring PRDX 2 in biopsy samples before treatment may contribute to more effective management of OS.     

ProcDef: Local‐to‐global Deformation for Skeleton‐free Character Animation

Animations of characters with flexible bodies such as jellyfish, snails, and, hearts are difficult to design using traditional skeleton‐based approaches. A standard approach is keyframing, but adjusting the shape of the flexible body for each key frame is tedious. In addition, the character cannot dynamically adjust its motion to respond to the environment or user input. This paper introduces a new procedural deformation framework (ProcDef) for designing and driving animations of such flexible objects. Our approach is to synthesize global motions procedurally by integrating local deformations. ProcDef provides an efficient design scheme for local deformation patterns; the user can control the orientation and magnitude of local deformations as well as the propagation of deformation signals by specifying line charts and volumetric fields. We also present a fast and robust deformation algorithm based on shape‐matching dynamics and show some example animations to illustrate the feasibility of our framework.     

Local dimming light‐guiding plate type backlight system using alignment‐controlled polymer‐dispersed liquid crystals

A new technology which enables a local brightness control according to the displayed images has been expected in the thin and lightweight backlight systems to improve a contrast ratio and power consumption of the liquid crystal displays (LCDs). In this paper, we have proposed a novel local‐dimming backlight system using alignment‐controlled polymer‐dispersed liquid crystals as a light‐guiding plate and investigated the forming conditions of polymer‐dispersed liquid crystals to achieve both a high‐luminance ratio and a fast response speed. As a result, we found that a luminance ratio and response speed of the backlight system can be improved by using bifunctional LC monomer materials and forming fine and rigid polymer network in the LCs, and achieved high luminance ratio of 16:1 and fast response time less than 0.5 ms. In addition, we fabricated the twisted nematic‐mode LCD using the local dimming light‐guiding plate‐type backlight based on this design, and successfully realized eight times higher contrast ratio than that of the traditional twisted nematic‐mode LCD.     

Interval Evaluations in the Analytic Hierarchy Process By Possibility Analysis

Since a pairwise comparison matrix in the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is based on human intuition, the given matrix will always include inconsistent elements violating the transitivity property. We propose the Interval AHP by which interval weights can be obtained. The widths of the estimated interval weights represent inconsistency in judging data. Since interval weights can be obtained from inconsistent data, the proposed Interval AHP is more appropriate to human judgment. Assuming crisp values in a pairwise comparison matrix, the interval comparisons including the given crisp comparisons can be obtained by applying the Linear Programming (LP) approach. Using an interval preference relation, the Interval AHP for crisp data can be extended to an approach for interval data allowing to express the uncertainty of human judgment in pairwise comparisons.
