SO2-removal using ammonia solution in a packed column

The effect of variables on efficiency of SO₂ removal from a simulated waste gas by use of ammonia solution was studied. The variables were gas, feed solution and recirculation flow rate, SO₂ concentration in the gas phase, NH₃ concentration in the ammonia solution, and pH in scrubber effluent solutions. The scrubber was 3“ — OD methyl metacrylate column packed with 1 •4” — plastic Rasching rings in 90 cm packed height. Solution analysis was performed by Palmrose method and pH meter. The following empirical equations were obtained by regression analysis; EFF = 33.52 G^0.0552 F^0.118 R^0.772 EFF = 64.10 S^0.143 N^0.0153 k_G = 3.51 x 10^-6 G^1.160 L_0.647     

A re-examination of seasonal variation in suicides in Australia and New Zealand

BACKGROUND: To examine the seasonality of suicides in Australia and New Zealand during the period 1981 to 1993. METHODS: A chi-square test and a harmonic analysis were used to detect the seasonality of the suicide data. RESULTS: The reduced amplitude and a smaller proportion of variance accounted for by seasonality suggested the seasonal effect on suicide is greatly diminished. The absence of biseasonal distribution of female suicides was also consistently found in the two countries. The finding was contrary to the reported results in seventies in many Western countries. CONCLUSIONS: The change in living condition, roles of males and females and communication pattern resulted in the reduction of climatic and environment effect in the seasonality of suicides were suggested. LIMITATIONS: The results would be better if a longer series of suicide date were available.

A type-merging algorithm for extracting an isosurface from volumetric data

A new approach for reducing the number of triangles representing an isosurface in volumetric data is presented. The basic idea is to classify the configurations of the marching cubes approach into types. Surface patches traversing neighboring cubes of the same type can be merged into patches, which can be approximated with fewer and larger triangles. Experimental results show that the number of triangles is about 50% of that obtained with the marching cubes algorithm, with comparable image quality. The execution time is somewhat longer than that of the marching cubes algorithm.     

Rituximab chimeric anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody therapy for relapsed indolent lymphoma: half of patients respond to a four-dose treatment program

PURPOSE: The CD20 antigen is expressed on more than 90% of B-cell lymphomas. It is appealing for targeted therapy, because it does not shed or modulate. A chimeric monoclonal antibody more effectively mediates host effector functions and is itself less immunogenic than are murine antibodies. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a multiinstitutional trial of the chimeric anti-CD20 antibody, IDEC-C2B8. Patients with relapsed low grade or follicular lymphoma received an outpatient treatment course of IDEC-C2B8 375 mg/m2 intravenously weekly for four doses. RESULTS: From 31 centers, 166 patients were entered. Of this intent-to-treat group, 48% responded. With a median follow-up duration of 11.8 months, the projected median time to progression for responders is 13.0 months. Serum antibody levels were sustained longer after the fourth infusion than after the first, and were higher in responders and in patients with lower tumor burden. The majority of adverse events occurred during the first infusion and were grade 1 or 2; fever and chills were the most common events. Only 12% of patients had grade 3 and 3% grade 4 toxicities. A human antichimeric antibody was detected in only one patient. CONCLUSION: The response rate of 48% with IDEC-C2B8 is comparable to results with single-agent cytotoxic chemotherapy. Toxicity was mild. Attention needs to be paid to the rate of antibody infusion, with titration according to toxicity. Further investigation of this agent is warranted, including its use in conjunction with standard chemotherapy.     

Transduction of full-length TAT fusion proteins into mammalian cells: TAT-p27Kip1 induces cell migration

Human procathepsin L has been expressed in E. coli in the form of inclusion bodies. The recombinant protein was isolated, refolded and processed at pH 5.5 by the addition of dextran sulfate which increased the overall yield of cathepsin L almost 10-fold. After the auto-activation of the 38 kDa procathepsin L at least three processing sites were determined by N-terminal amino acid sequencing. After replacing the Ala205 residue by glutamic acid, cathepsin B-like specificity was introduced into cathepsin L. This mutation resulted in a 15-fold increased activity toward the substrate Z-Arg-Arg-AMC and in a 29-fold decreased activity toward Z-Phe-Arg-AMC. Residue 205 is thereby confirmed experimentally to be critical for the specificity of cathepsins B and L.     

Induction of feline acquired immune deficiency syndrome by feline leukemia virus: immuno- and neuroendocrine dysfunctions

Young cats, when chronically infected with feline leukemia virus (FeLV), developed feline acquired immune deficiency syndrome (FAIDS). The syndrome was associated with a sequence of dysfunctions in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) and the immune system, manifested in the reduction of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and testosterone in blood plasma. The average FSH and LH (in plasma or lymphocyte), testosterone, and LHRH concentrations in the 20 FeLV-infected cats were measured by radioimmunoassay. The results were compared with those of the 12 control cats that were not FeLV-infected. Four weeks after infection, the plasma LHRH concentration in the infected cats showed a 43% reduction. Five to six weeks after infection, the content of FSH and LH in lymphocyte was reduced by 50% and 28%, respectively, whereas, the plasma FSH and LH was reduced by 52% and 42%, respectively. A significant reduction in testosterone content was detected at Week 11 of infection. The onset of the immuno- and neuroendocrine dysfunctions in FAIDs cats followed this sequence: hypothalamus, lymphocyte, pituitary, adrenal gland, and gonads. Indirect immunofluorescence assay showed the presence of FeLV cytoplasmic antigens in the fibers of the hypothalamic preoptic region and the Leydig cells. The possible causal relationship between the dysfunction of the lymphocyte and HPG systems and the presence of FeLV was discussed.

Aristolochic acids, aristolactam alkaloids and amides from Aristolochia kankauensis

Fourteen aristolochic acid derivatives: ariskanins A-E, 3-hydroxy-4-methoxy-10-nitrophenanthrene-1-carboxylic acid methyl ester, aristolochic acid-II methyl ester, aristolochic acid-IV methyl ester, aristolochic acid-C, -I, -II, -III, -IV, -IVa; nine aristolactam alkaloids: aristolactam, aristolactam-AII, -BIII, -AIII, -III, cepharanone-A, 9-methoxy-aristolactam-I, aristolactam-N-beta-D-glucoside and aristolactam-C-N-beta-D-glucoside; a 4,5-dioxoaporphine alkaloid: cepharadione-A, together with 12 other compounds: methyl-p-coumarate, N-trans-feruloyltyramine, N-cis-feruloyltyramine, methyl vanillate, methyl paraben, allantoin, an octadecyl- and eicosyl ferulate mixture, cis- and trans-p-coumaric acid, N-p-coumaroyltyramine, N-p-cis-coumaroyltyramine, methyl ferulate and isorhamnetin-3-O-rutinoside were isolated and characterized from the fresh root and stem of Aristolochia kankauensis. Their structures were elucidated by spectral and chemical methods. Among them, ariskanins-A-E and N-p-cis-coumaroyltyramine are reported for the first time from a natural source. The cytotoxicity and antiplatelet activity of the compounds isolated are also discussed.     

An event domain formalism for sample path perturbation analysis of discrete event dynamic systems

We present a state-space representation of a general discrete event dynamic system (DEDS) model on the basis of a natural event domain, which replaces time. Perturbation analysis of a sample path Of a DEDS is then formalized using some fundamental concepts introduced to establish conditions for its validity. A set of simple perturbation equations is then derived under these conditions, so that performance gradients with respect to parameters are estimated from observation of real or simulated data on a single sample path.
