Broadcasting System Compliant with MPEG‐2/4 IPMPX

In this paper, we present an intellectual property management and protection (IPMP) system in a broadcasting environment to provide mechanisms for copyright and contents protection that are compliant with the MPEG‐2 and MPEG‐4 IPMP Extension (IPMPX) specifications. The technology for processing IPMP related information was exploited, and a terminal model has been successfully designed and implemented. In addition, interoperability, which is the main objective of MPEG‐2/4 IPMPX, has been addressed in detail. The experimental results show that the implemented system performs the IPMP process well, meeting the requirements of a broadcasting environment.     

A 2-Gbaud 0.7-V swing voltage-mode driver and on-chip terminatorfor high-speed NRZ data transmission

A large-swing, voltage-mode driver and an on-chip termination circuit are presented for high-speed nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) data transmission through a copper cable. The proposed driver with active pull-up and pull-down can generate a 700-mV signal to deliver a 2 Gbaud serial NRZ data stream. Low output impedance offered by simple negative-feedback resistors alleviates the detrimental effect of the parasitic capacitance by supplying fast current impulses. A proposed on-chip termination circuit provides termination impedance to a mid-supply termination voltage with the benefit of reduced parasitic capacitance and better termination characteristics compared with off-chip termination. The driver and termination circuits have been incorporated in a 2 Gbaud transceiver chip and fabricated in 0.35 μm CMOS technology. Measurements show a 1.4 V differential swing with a slew rate of 2.5 V/ns at the receiver output and a 65% reduction of reflection by the on-chip termination circuit with power consumption of 191 mW at 3.3 V supply     

2.4 GHz continuously variable ferroelectric phase shifters using all-pass networks

Continuously variable ferroelectric (BST on sapphire) phase shifters based on all-pass networks are presented. An all-pass network phase shifter consists of only lumped LC elements, and thus the total size of the phase shifter is kept to less than 2.2 mm /spl times/ 2.6 mm at 2.4 GHz. The tunability (C/sub max//C/sub min/) of a BST interdigital capacitor is over 2.9 with a bias voltage of 140 V. The phase shifter provides more than 121/spl deg/ phase shift with the maximum insertion loss of 1.8 dB and the worst case return loss of 12.5 dB from 2.4 GHz to 2.5 GHz. By cascading two identical phase shifters, more than 255/spl deg/ phase shift is obtained with the maximum insertion loss of 3.75 dB. The loss figure-of-merit of both the single- and double-section phase shifters is over 65/spl deg//dB from 2.4 GHz to 2.5 GHz.     

Efficient dc-free RLL codes for optical recording

We report on new dc-free runlength-limited codes (DCRLL) intended for the next generation of DVD. The efficiency of the newly developed DCRLL schemes is extremely close to the theoretical maximum, and as a result, significant density gains can be obtained with respect to prior art coding schemes. With a newly developed DCRLL (d=2) code we can achieve a 9% higher overall rate than that of DVD's EFMPlus.     

Full constellation phase detector for carrier recovery in high-order QAM systems

A full constellation phase detector that improves carrier acquisition performance in high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is proposed. The weighting function of the phase detector is mathematically derived, and simulated phase detector characteristics are presented for 256QAM. The results of an experimental evaluation are also reported, which show that the carrier recovery loop based on the proposed phase detector has a large frequency acquisition range and low phase tracking error in high-order QAM.

An Efficient Rerouting Scheme for MPLS-Based Recovery and Its Performance Evaluation

The path recovery in MPLS is the technique to reroute traffic around a failure or congestion in a LSP. Currently, there are two kinds of model for path recovery: rerouting and protection switching. The existing schemes based on rerouting model have the disadvantage of more difficulty in handling node failures or concurrent node faults. Similarly, the existing schemes based on protection switching model have some difficulty in solving problem such as resource utilization and protection of recovery path. This paper proposes an efficient rerouting scheme to establish a LSP along the least-cost recovery path of all possible alternative paths that can be found on a working path, which is calculated by the upstream LSR that has detected a failure. The proposed scheme can increase resource utilization, establish a recovery path relatively fast, support almost all failure types such as link failures, node failures, failures on both a working path and its recovery path, and concurrent faults. Through simulation, the performance of the proposed scheme is measured and compared with the existing schemes.     

Integrated optical waveguide polarizer based on photobleaching-induced birefringence in an electrooptic polymer

A TE-pass waveguide polarizer is fabricated by utilizing the photobleaching-induced birefringence at room temperature in an electrooptic polymer. The polarizer consists of the photobleached waveguide supporting only TE mode, which is integrated in the middle of the etched rib waveguide supporting both TE and TM modes. It has a simple structure and requires no high temperature process like poling. The measured polarization extinction ratio is about 21 dB at the wavelengths of 1.3 and 1.55 /spl mu/m, and the estimated excess loss is about 0.4 dB.
