Mathematically, skewed symmetry is a nonaccidental property because it can be interpreted as bilateral symmetry in depth viewed from a nonorthogonal angle. To find out whether this is a useful property in the perception of visual forms, 4 experiments were designed in which the Ss had to determine whether 2 symmetric or random patterns were the same regardless of possible affine transformations between them. The results provided mixed evidence: Although there was always a large symmetry advantage, skewed symmetry was only perceived as bilateral symmetry in depth for dot patterns with higher order types of symmetry (Exp 1), when the dots were connected to form closed polygons (Exp 2 and 4), or when they were surrounded by a frame to enhance their planarity (Exp 3). A method for finding all matches in a pre‐processed dictionary for a query string q and with at most k differences is presented. A very fast constant‐time estimate using hashes is presented. A tree structure is used to minimize the number of estimates made. Practical tests are performed, showing that the estimate can filter out 99% of the full comparisons for 40% error rates and dictionaries of up to four million words. BACKGROUND: At the present time, late graft loss is the major cause of kidney failure after transplantation. However, the influence of metabolic factors on this process is ill-defined. METHODS: To identify the impact of lipid metabolism, glucose metabolism, and blood pressure and their prognostic value for graft survival, data for all recipients of a kidney allograft with a potential graft survival of >15 years and a minimum graft survival of 1 month were analyzed retrospectively. Recipients of kidney grafts functioning more than 15 years (n=32) were compared with those with a graft function of less than 10 years (n=152, controls) and evaluated in a multivariate analysis. RESULTS: Low levels of serum cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose, before and after transplantation, were accompanied by a prolonged graft survival. Prognostic factors for early graft failure included serum triglycerides >300 mg/dl, cholesterol >250 mg/dl before transplantation, serum creatinine >4.0 mg/dl 1 month after transplantation, and donor age above 45 or less than 10 years. Additionally, systolic and, particularly, diastolic blood pressure was lower in the group with a prolonged graft function as compared with controls immediately before and after transplantation. In addition, the incidence of primary graft function was lower and the incidence of acute rejection episodes higher in controls. Cold and warm ischemic time, body mass index, recipient age, and gender did not differ significantly. To test the hypothesis that only an adaptive algorithm would guarantee optimal feedback control of glycemia in insulin-dependent diabetes, fasting chronically diabetic dogs at rest were subjected to short-term artificial beta cell treatment. Insulin was applied intravenously and an oral glucose load was given during the experiment. Employing the same dosing algorithm, three different control strategies were employed in a random order on different days: adaptive control (minimum variance controller, Test A), fixed command control using on-line parameter estimates (Test B), and fixed command control using off-line individually optimized dosage constants (Test C). Comparison was made to nondiabetic control animals. The glycemic profiles were entirely normal in Test A and C, but were distinctly elevated in Test B. The peripheral hyperinsulinaemia could, however, not be avoided by adaptive control. It is concluded that the restoration of physiological blood glucose control in insulin-dependent diabetes requires dosage parameters which are either continually adapted to the actual situation (adaptive control) or are optimized to meet the individual's needs. In the latter case, fixed command control may be employed. Peripheral hyperinsulinaemia cannot be avoided as long as insulin is administered by a posthepatic route. 相似文献

This paper presents several randomised algorithms for generating paths in large models according to a given coverage criterion.
Using methods for counting combinatorial structures, these algorithms can efficiently explore very large models, based on
a graphical representation by an automaton or by a product of several automata. This new approach can be applied to random
exploration in order to optimise path coverage and can be generalised to take into account other coverage criteria, via the
definition of a notion of randomised coverage satisfaction. Our main contributions are a method for drawing paths uniformly
at random in composed models, i.e. models that are given as products of automata, first without and then with synchronisation;
a new efficient approach to draw paths at random taking into account some other coverage criterion. Experimental results show
promising agreement with theoretical predictions and significant improvement over previous randomised approaches. This work
opens new perspectives for future studies of statistical testing and model checking, mainly to fight the combinatorial explosion

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmental pollutants produced by incomplete combustion of organic matter. They induce their own metabolism by upregulating xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes such as cytochrome P450 monooxygenase 1A1 (CYP1A1) by activating the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR). However, previous studies showed that individual PAHs may also interact with the constitutive androstane receptor (CAR). Here, we studied ten PAHs, different in carcinogenicity classification, for their potential to activate AHR- and CAR-dependent luciferase reporter genes in human liver cells. The majority of investigated PAHs activated AHR, while non-carcinogenic PAHs tended to activate CAR. We further characterized gene expression, protein abundancies and activities of the AHR targets CYP1A1 and 1A2, and the CAR target CYP2B6 in human HepaRG hepatoma cells. Enzyme induction patterns strongly resembled the profiles obtained at the receptor level, with AHR-activating PAHs inducing CYP1A1/1A2 and CAR-activating PAHs inducing CYP2B6. In summary, this study provides evidence that beside well-known activation of AHR, some PAHs also activate CAR, followed by subsequent expression of respective target genes. Furthermore, we found that an increased PAH ring number is associated with AHR activation as well as the induction of DNA double-strand breaks, whereas smaller PAHs activated CAR but showed no DNA-damaging potential. 相似文献

Brugada syndrome (BrS) is an inherited cardiac arrhythmia that predisposes to ventricular fibrillation and sudden cardiac death. It originates from oligogenic alterations that affect cardiac ion channels or their accessory proteins. The main hurdle for the study of the functional effects of those variants is the need for a specific model that mimics the complex environment of human cardiomyocytes. Traditionally, animal models or transient heterologous expression systems are applied for electrophysiological investigations, each of these models having their limitations. The ability to create induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs), providing a source of human patient-specific cells, offers new opportunities in the field of cardiac disease modelling. Contemporary iPSC-CMs constitute the best possible in vitro model to study complex cardiac arrhythmia syndromes such as BrS. To date, thirteen reports on iPSC-CM models for BrS have been published and with this review we provide an overview of the current findings, with a focus on the electrophysiological parameters. We also discuss the methods that are used for cell derivation and data acquisition. In the end, we critically evaluate the knowledge gained by the use of these iPSC-CM models and discuss challenges and future perspectives for iPSC-CMs in the study of BrS and other arrhythmias. 相似文献
