The critical velocity of rebound was determined for spherical ammonium fluorescein particles in the size range of 0.44–7.3 μm. The method was based on measurements with a variable nozzle area impactor (VNAI) and numerical simulations. A comparison to previous results with spherical silver particles obtained with the same method showed that the critical velocity was approximately two orders of magnitude higher for ammonium fluorescein than for silver at the same size range. Among the hard test materials, including steel, aluminium, molybdenum, and Tedlar, the surface material had no significant effect on the critical velocity of rebound within the accuracy of the method. On the contrary, the critical velocity was observed to be highly dependent on the obliquity of the impact at the onset of rebound. While the ratio of the maximum tangential and normal velocities was defined as a measure for the obliquity, the critical velocity was found to be more than a magnitude smaller for very oblique impacts with the velocity ratio above 9 than for close-to-normal impacts with the velocity ratio below 1.5. The results of this study can be considered as a link between the recently published critical velocity results for nanoparticles and the older results for micron-sized particles.

Detailed chemical characterization of exhaust particles from 23 individual city buses was performed in Helsinki, Finland. Investigated buses represented different technologies in terms of engines, exhaust after-treatment systems (e.g., diesel particulate filter, selective catalytic reduction, and three-way catalyst) and fuels (diesel, diesel-electric (hybrid), ethanol, and compressed natural gas). Regarding emission standards, the buses operated at EURO III, EURO IV, and EEV (enhanced environmentally friendly vehicle) emission levels. The chemical composition of exhaust particles was determined by using a soot particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SP-AMS). Based on the SP-AMS results, the bus emission particles were dominated by organics and refractory black carbon (rBC). The mass spectra of organics consisted mostly of hydrocarbon fragments (54–86% of total organics), the pattern of hydrocarbon fragments being rather similar regardless of the bus type. Regarding oxygenated organic fragments, ethanol-fueled buses had unique mass-to-charge ratios (m/z) of 45, 73, 87, and 89 (mass fragments of C2H5O+, C3H5O2+, C4H7O2+, and C4H9O2+, respectively) that were not detected for the other bus types at the same level. For rBC, there was a small difference in the ratio of C4+ and C5+ to C3+ for different bus types but also for the individual buses of the same type. In addition to organics and rBC, the presence of trace metals in the bus emission particles was investigated.

This study presents a CMOS receiver chip realized in 0.18 µm High-Voltage CMOS (HV-CMOS) technology and intended for high precision pulsed time-of-flight laser range finding utilizing high-energy sub-ns laser pulses. The IC chip includes a trans-impedance preamplifier, a post-amplifier and a timing comparator. Timing discrimination is based on leading edge detection and the trailing edge is also discriminated for measuring the width of the pulse. The transimpedance of the channel is 25 kΩ, the uncompensated walk error is 470 ps in the dynamic range of 1:21,000 and the input referred equivalent noise current 450 nA (rms).  相似文献

During recent decades the amounts of nutrients discharged to Finnish surface waters have markedly decreased. This has been achieved by considerable investments in water protection, which were made mainly to improve municipal and industrial wastewater purification. We investigated whether these water protection measures have decreased phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations in Finnish rivers and lakes. In addition, possible trends in chlorophyll a concentrations in lakes were studied. The data consisted of a total of over 68 000 monitoring results of 22 rivers and 173 lakes (or sub-basins of lakes) with different types of catchment areas. The study period covered the years 1975–2000 and the non-parametric Kendall Tau b and Seasonal Kendall tests were applied for detecting trends. Decreasing nutrient concentration trends were typical in many lakes and rivers earlier polluted by municipal and industrial wastewaters. Increasing nutrient concentration trends were common in smaller rivers and lakes receiving diffuse loading from agriculture. The results show that the investments directed towards wastewater purification have effectively improved the quality of Finnish inland waters. However, no clear effects of decreasing non-point loading were found. Thus, more effective measures should be directed towards decreasing non-point source loading.  相似文献

In osteoporosis, total bone mass decreases and the thickness of the cortical layer diminishes in the shafts of the long bones. In this study, a simple ultrasonic in vivo method for determining the thickness of the cortical bone layer was applied, and the suitability of two different signal analysis techniques, i.e., envelope and cepstral methods, for measuring cortical thickness was compared. The values of cortical thickness, as determined with both techniques, showed high linear correlations (r ges 0.95) with the thickness values obtained from in vitro measurements with a caliper or in vivo measurements by peripheral quantitative CT (pQCT). No systematic errors that could be related to the cortical thickness were found. The in vivo accuracy of the measurements was 6.6% and 7.0% for the envelope and cepstral methods, respectively. Further, the in vivo precision for the envelope and cepstral methods was 0.26 mm and 0.28 mm, respectively. Although the results are similar for both of the techniques, the simplicity of the envelope method makes it more attractive for clinical applications. In conclusion, a simple ultrasound measurement provides an accurate estimate of the cortical bone thickness. The techniques investigated may have clinical potential for osteoporosis screening and therefore warrant more extensive clinical investigations with healthy and osteoporotic individuals.  相似文献

Knowledge of the structure-property-function relationships of dermal scales of armoured fish could enable pathways to improved bioinspired human body armour, and may provide clues to the evolutionary origins of mineralized tissues. Here, we present a multiscale experimental and computational approach that reveals the materials design principles present within individual ganoid scales from the 'living fossil' Polypterus senegalus. This fish belongs to the ancient family Polypteridae, which first appeared 96 million years ago during the Cretaceous period and still retains many of their characteristics. The mechanistic origins of penetration resistance (approximating a biting attack) were investigated and found to include the juxtaposition of multiple distinct reinforcing composite layers that each undergo their own unique deformation mechanisms, a unique spatial functional form of mechanical properties with regions of differing levels of gradation within and between material layers, and layers with an undetectable gradation, load-dependent effective material properties, circumferential surface cracking, orthogonal microcracking in laminated sublayers and geometrically corrugated junctions between layers.  相似文献

A parametric method to estimate frequency-dependent phase velocity and attenuation is presented in this paper. The parametric method is compared with standard nonparametric Fourier analysis techniques using numerical simulations as well as real pulse-echo experiments. Approximate standard deviations are derived for both methods and validated with numerical simulations. Compared to standard Fourier analysis, the parametric model gives considerably lower variance when estimating attenuation and phase velocity. In contrast to nonparametric techniques, the proposed estimator avoids the phase unwrapping problem because analytical expressions for the continuous phase velocity and attenuation can be derived.  相似文献

We introduce an imaging technique based on second-harmonic generation with cylindrical vector beams that is extremely sensitive to three-dimensional orientation and nanoscale morphology of metal nano-objects. Our experiments and second-harmonic field calculations based on frequency-domain boundary element method are in very good agreement. The technique provides contrast for structural features that cannot be resolved by linear techniques or conventional states of polarization and shows great potential for simple and cost-effective far-field optical imaging in plasmonics.  相似文献

The way in which GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions associated with grid electricity consumption is handled in different LCA (life cycle assessment) studies, varies significantly. Apart from differences in actual research questions, methodological choices and data set selection have a significant impact on the outcomes. These inconsistencies result in difficulties to compare the findings of various LCA studies. This review paper explores the issue from a methodological point of view. The perspectives of ALCA (attributional life cycle assessment) and CLCA (consequential life cycle assessment) are reflected. Finally, the paper summarizes the key issues and provides suggestions on the way forward. The major challenge related to both of the LCA categories is to determine the GHG emissions of the power production technologies under consideration. Furthermore, the specific challenge in ALCA is to determine the appropriate electricity production mix, and in CLCA, to identify the marginal technologies affected and related consequences. Significant uncertainties are involved, particularly in future-related LCAs, and these should not be ignored. Harmonization of the methods and data sets for various purposes is suggested, acknowledging that selections might be subjective.  相似文献

The surface pretreatments of the austenitic stainless steel and copper surfaces for the sol-gel coating were carried out by chemical, plasma electrolytic or CO2 cryoblasting techniques. With the austenitic stainless steel the smoothest surfaces were obtained with plasma electrolytic cleaning, after which the measured contact angles of water were clearly decreased revealing improved hydrophilicity. As well with the copper samples the smooth surface and improved hydrophilicity was obtained with the plasma electrolytic cleaning, but oxide layer formed to the copper surface immediately after the treatment. CO2 cryoblasting provided rough surface with wetting properties close to the original surface both for austenitic stainless steel and copper surfaces. CO2 cryoblasting provided best appearance for the copper surface because no oxidation happened with that treatment. XPS and SIMS studies showed that with the plasma electrolytic treatment the surface layer of the austenitic stainless steel enriched of chromium and the oxide layer formed on the surface was less than 10 nm thick. With the chemical cleaning and CO2 cryoblasting, the chromium enrichment to the stainless steel surface was less. However XPS and SIMS studies showed that chemical treatment provided thinner oxide layer to copper surface than plasma electrolytic treatment.  相似文献
