When charcoal-broiled beef was fed to human volunteers, who were then given phenacetin orally, the concentration of phenacetin in the plasma was lowered, but its half-life in the plasma was not changed. The data suggest that feeding charcoal-broiled beef enhances the metabolism of orally administered phenacetin in the intestine or during its first pass through the liver, or both. 相似文献

The posterior pole vasculature of 100 patients with different sickling haemoglobinopathies was studied prospectively over a period of three years. Various abnormalities of the posterior pole vasculature were seen in 29 per cent of the patients. Continuous remodelling of the macular and perimacular vasculature occurred. We report a case of beta 2-microglobulin-induced amyloidosis. The patient was a 40-year-old man suffering from non-amyloid nephropathy, who had been treated by haemodialysis for 20 years. Lichenoid skin lesions, consisting of groups of pin-head-sized shiny papules, were present on the arms and trunk. On histological examination, amyloid deposits were present, principally in the dermal papillae, but also around the sweat ducts and hair follicles. The amyloid displayed potassium-permanganate-resistant Congo red affinity, and green birefringence under polarized light. Immunohistochemically, beta 2-microglobulin was demonstrated in the lesions, confirming that they were a manifestation of beta 2-microglobulin-associated amyloidosis. Skin lesions of this type have not been reported previously in beta 2-microglobulin-associated amyloidosis. 相似文献

A 9-year-old girl with Rett syndrome presented with typical symptoms of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Upon investigation she was found to have a primary respiratory alkalosis associated with diabetes ketoacidaemia. Once non-ketotic normoglycaemia was achieved her respiratory alkalosis persisted. This was felt to be due to an abnormal breathing pattern of hyperventilation punctuated by apnoeas which is associated with Rett syndrome. 相似文献

While functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is now used widely for demonstrating neural activity-related signals associated with perceptual, motor, and cognitive processes in humans, to date this technique has not been developed for use with nonhuman primates. fMRI in monkeys offers a potentially valuable experimental approach for investigating brain function, which will complement and aid existing techniques such as electrophysiology and the behavioral analysis of the effects of brain lesions. There are, however, a number of significant technical challenges involved in using fMRI with monkeys. Here, we describe the procedures by which we have overcome these challenges to carry out successful fMRI experiments in an alert monkey, and we present the first evidence of activity-related fMRI signals from monkey cerebral cortex. 相似文献
