Low-temperature (400 °C) pyrolysis of Texas lignite produced volatile products typical of coal tars, with tar evolution beginning at about 300 °C. n-Alkanes up to about C30 were observed among the products and these were accompanied by smaller but significant amounts of 1 -alkenes. Similar pyrolyses were performed on pyridine extracts and sodium hydroxide extracts of lignite. The alkanes and alkenes were seen among the pyrolysis products from the pyridine extracts and from the residual lignite from both types of extractions, but they were not seen among the pyrolysis products from the sodium hydroxide extracts. Pyrolyses of some model compounds suggested that dealkylation of alkyl-substituted arenes can be significant at 400 °C and can account for the production of the alkanes and alkenes from the lignite. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: In transmission and scanning electron microscopy imaging, the ability to obtain sufficient contrast between the components of a blend when they are both of a similar chemical structure still remains problematic. This paper investigates the domain morphology of a polymer blend containing two polyamides, nylon 6 and the semi‐aromatic polyamide poly(m‐xylene adipamide) (MXD6), using scanning electron microscopy in backscattered electron imaging mode. The efficiency of three staining agents, ruthenium tetroxide, phosphotungstic acid and silver sulfide, in obtaining optimum phase contrast between the two polymers is discussed. RESULTS: The use of silver sulfide as a staining agent was found to be a fast and reliable approach which required basic sample preparation and provided excellent compositional contrast between the phases present in the nylon 6/MXD6 blends compared to the other staining agents. CONCLUSIONS: The technique described in this paper is believed to be a novel and versatile method that has the potential to further improve the ability to study complex polymer blends where one polymer contains an aromatic ring. The effect of chlorine and oxygen concentrations on the removal of mercury at an FGD-batch reactor 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A series of laboratory scale experiments were conducted in an FGD-batch reactor. A synthetic flue gas was produced and directed through a CaCO3 suspension contained in a glass reactor vessel. The suspension temperature was set at 54 °C through a water bath. In order to observe the distribution of mercury species in the system, solid, liquid and gaseous samples were taken and analysed. For gaseous mercury determination, continuous measurements were carried out, up and downstream the reactor. Furthermore, the concentration of chlorine in the scrubber solution of the system was varied from 0 to 62 g/l under different oxidative conditions.In a first approach, a concentration drop of elemental mercury coming out of the system was observed. The latter occurs only when high concentrations of Cl− are present, combined with a high O2 availability in the scrubber. It was also observed that mercury species distribution in the different phases varies, depending on the available chemical form of chlorine and oxygen concentration. 相似文献

The traditional models of sintering predict a pronounced dependence of densification rate on the scale of the microstructure as measured by the grain size. This study evaluates the grain size exponent for densification during isothermal sintering of an aggregated nanocrystalline zirconia powder, and for a submicrometer alumina powder. The results gave grain size exponents that are much higher than those anticipated for the expected sintering mechanisms. Furthermore, microstructural analysis showed that this overestimate of the exponent could be due to the spatial heterogeneity in the microstructure on the scale of the diffusion distance. To assess this issue, pore boundary tessellation was used to determine a new measurement of effective diffusion distance that takes into account the local spatial arrangement of pores. This measurement gives exponents much closer to those expected for the sintering of tetragonal zirconia by volume diffusion, and for the sintering of the alumina by grain-boundary diffusion. 相似文献

An integrated multibeam echo sounder and acoustic Doppler current profiler field survey was conducted in July 2008 to investigate the morphodynamics of the St. Clair River at the outlet of Lake Huron. The principal morphological features of the upper St. Clair River included flow-transverse bedforms that appear weakly mobile, erosive bedforms in cohesive muds, thin non-cohesive veneers of weakly mobile sediment that cover an underlying cohesive (till or glacio-lacustrine) surface, and vegetation that covers the bed. The flow was characterized by acceleration as the banks constrict from Lake Huron into the St. Clair River, an approximately 1500-m long region of flow separation downstream from the Blue Water Bridge, and secondary flow connected to: i) channel curvature; ii) forcing of the flow by local bed topography, and iii) flow wakes in the lee side of ship wrecks. Nearshore, sand-sized, sediment from Lake Huron was capable of being transported into, and principally along, the banks of the upper St. Clair River by the measured flow. A comparison of bathymetric surveys conducted in 2007 and 2008 identifies that the gravel bed does undergo slow downstream movement, but that this movement does not appear to be generated by the mean flow, and could possibly be caused by ship-propeller-induced turbulence. The study results suggest that the measured mean flow and dredging within the channel have not produced major scour of the upper St. Clair River and that the recent fall in the level of Lake Huron is unlikely to have been caused by these mechanisms. 相似文献

Pacific salmon were introduced to the Great Lakes in the 1960s and now support major recreational fishery. Population declines resulting from invasive species have prompted agencies to consider diversifying sport fisheries through stocking. Atlantic salmon are native to Lake Ontario, but a small fishery has developed in northern Lake Huron since the 1990s that appears suited to the Lake Huron food web leading to requests for increased stocking by anglers and consideration by agencies. However, no study has evaluated the trophic ecology of Atlantic salmon in relation to other salmonine predators in northern Lake Huron. In this study, we used stable isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N), along with mercury (Hg) concentrations to assess resource use, niche overlap, and contaminant accumulation in Atlantic salmon compared to select Lake Huron predators. Atlantic salmon exhibited considerable niche overlap with Chinook and coho salmon but were strongly differentiated from lake trout. In addition, we observed that Atlantic salmon had similar Hg concentrations as coho but were lower than both Chinook salmon and lake trout. Based upon the relationship between fish size, δ15N, and Hg, Atlantic salmon bioaccumulate Hg similarly to Pacific salmon but likely have lower consumptive demands than Chinook salmon. Continued attention should be placed on understanding how Atlantic salmon fit into the current Lake Huron food web in order to evaluate the long-term efficacy of the Atlantic salmon stocking program. 相似文献

A novel MINLP-based representation of the original complex model for predicting gasoline emissions 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced Reformulated Gasoline (RFG) requirements as a measure to reduce emissions from gasoline-powered vehicles in certain geographic areas. As part of this effort, the EPA developed empirical models for predicting emissions as a function of gasoline properties and established statutory baseline emissions from a representative set of gasolines. All reformulated gasoline requires certification via this model, known as the Complex Model, and all refiners and importers calculate emissions performance reductions from the statutory baseline gasoline. The current representation of the Complex Model is extremely difficult to implement within refinery operations models or to use in combination with models for designer gasoline. RFG and boutique fuels are key driving forces in the North American refining industry.The RFG models introduce increasingly complex constraints with the major limitation that they are implicitly defined through a series of complicated disjunctions assembled by the EPA in the form of spreadsheets. This implicit and cumbersome representation of the emissions predictive models renders rigorous optimization and sensitivity analysis very difficult to address directly. In this paper, we discuss how the federal government requirements for reformulated gasoline can be restated as a set of mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) constraints with the aid of disjunctive programming techniques. During the freezing of lamb adenosinetriphosphate disappearance markedly accelerates over the latent heat phase and contines virtually to completion with 20–30 days frozen storage at – 12°C. At commercial freezing rates in which carcasses are fully frozen in ~ 6–20 h the ATP concentration falls to 0.4–1.2 μmol/g or about 5–20% of that present immediately post-slaughter. Although small in quantity it is still capable of inducing severe thaw contracture (60–70% in boneless strips) due to active ATP turnover of ~ 60 μmol/g linked to the glycolytic production of ~ 30 μmol/g of lactate. Glycolysis does not occur during frozen storage whereas the ATP concentration further falls through enzymic hydrolysis to ~0.1 μmol/g, insufficient to cause thaw contracture. Thus through the disappearance of ATP in the frozen meat, toughness development from thaw contracture is avoided. 相似文献

Drift‐flux analyses are a common way of estimating the phase fractions and fluxes in vertical multiphase flows. However their use has had scant impact on the flotation and foam fractionation communities despite the publication of a number of such analyses over the past two decades. By recognizing that the physics that underpin the hydrodynamics of the froth are dissimilar to those that pertain to the bubbly liquid beneath, we present a drift‐flux analysis with two characteristic curves. Hydroelectric dams may affect anadromous fish survival and recruitment by limiting access to upstream habitats and adversely affecting quality of downstream habitats. In the Manistee River, a tributary to Lake Michigan, two hydroelectric dams potentially limit recruitment of anadromous rainbow trout (steelhead) by increasing tailrace water temperatures to levels that significantly reduce survival of young‐of‐year (YOY) fish. The objectives of this study were to determine whether proposed restoration scenarios (dam removals or a bottom withdrawal retrofit) would alter the Manistee River thermal regime and, consequently, improve wild steelhead survival and recruitment. Physical process models were used to predict Manistee River thermal regimes following each dam alteration scenario. Empirical relationships were derived from historical field surveys to quantify the effect of temperature on YOY production and potential recruitment of Manistee River steelhead. Both dam alteration scenarios lowered summer temperatures and increased steelhead recruitment by between 59% and 129%, but total recruitments were still low compared to other Great Lakes tributaries. Considering only temperature effects, bottom withdrawal provides the greatest promise for increasing natural steelhead recruitment by decreasing the likelihood of year‐class failures in the warmest summers. Results of this study may allow managers to evaluate mitigation alternatives for Manistee River dams during future relicensing negotiations, and illustrate the utility of physical process temperature models in groundwater‐fed rivers.
