The safe and effective application of thermal therapies is restricted due to lack of reliable noninvasive temperature estimators. In this paper, the temporal echo-shifts of backscattered ultrasound signals, collected from a gel-based phantom, were tracked and assigned with the past temperature values as radial basis functions neural networks input information. The phantom was heated using a piston-like therapeutic ultrasound transducer. The neural models were assigned to estimate the temperature at different intensities and points arranged across the therapeutic transducer radial line (60 mm apart from the transducer face). Model inputs, as well as the number of neurons were selected using the multiobjective genetic algorithm (MOGA). The best attained models present, in average, a maximum absolute error less than 0.5 degrees C, which is pointed as the borderline between a reliable and an unreliable estimator in hyperthermia/diathermia. In order to test the spatial generalization capacity, the best models were tested using spatial points not yet assessed, and some of them presented a maximum absolute error inferior to 0.5 degrees C, being "elected" as the best models. Presently, several bone graft substitutes are being developed or already available for clinical use. However, the limited number of clinical and in vivo trials for direct comparison between these products may complicate this choice. One of the main reasons for this scarcity it is the use of models that do not readily allow the direct comparison of multiple bone graft substitutes, due especially to the small number of implantation sites. Although sheep cancellous bone models are now well established for these purposes, the limited availability of cancellous bone makes it difficult to find multiple comparable sites within a same animal. These limitations can be overcome by the monocortical model here proposed as it consists in 5–6 holes (5 mm Ø), in the femoral diaphysis, with similar bone structure, overlying soft tissue and loading pattern for all defects. Associated to this model, it is also described a fast histomorphometric analysis method using a computer image segmentation test (Threshold method) to assess bone regeneration parameters. The information compiled through the experimental use of 45 sheep in several studies allowed determining that this ovine model has the potential to demonstrate differences in bone-forming performance between various scaffolds. Friction surfacing was performed to produce multi-layer coatings of AISI 1024, AISI 1045 and AISI H13 over mild steel substrates where a continuous joining was achieved between adjacent layers and between the clad and the substrate. Microscopic and hardness characterization revealed the presence of bainitic and martensitic microstructures which influenced the hardness of the coatings. The study aimed to determine which material combination was more wear-resistant. The analysis suggested that AISI 1024 presents the least wear, both in terms of friction coefficient and wear rate. Fungal strains were screened for lipase producing activities and 10 strains were classified as good producers. Aspergillus sp., Fusarium sp., and Penicillium sp. exhibited the highest activities when fermented in wheat bran (WB) and soybean bran (SB). No fungal growth was observed using sugarcane bagasse (CB). An experimental design was applied to incorporate CB into the fermentation process for lipase production by Aspergillus sp. and Penicillium sp., and to evaluate the best moisture content for the substrate. Strains studied achieved maximum lipase activities with 25% CB combined with 75% WB or SB at 40% moisture content. The highest lipase activities were observed for WB and SB, and for SB combined with CB using Aspergillus sp. Fermentation of 96 h was the optimum period for enzyme production. 相似文献

In this study, the influence of magnesium content on thermal and structural parameters during the unsteady-state unidirectional
solidification of Al–Mg alloys is analyzed. Using a special device, Al–Mg alloys containing 5, 10, and 15 wt% Mg were submitted
to unidirectional solidification. Using a data acquisition system, the temperature variations along the casting during solidification
were measured. From these results, the variations of solidification parameters as growth rate of dendrite tips, thermal gradient,
cooling rate, and local solidification time were determined. The variation of global heat transfer coefficient at metal/mould
interface was estimated through the adjustment of experimental temperature variation close to the interface and numerical
predictions. Primary and secondary dendrite arms spacing variations during solidification were measured by optical microscopy.
From these results, comparative analysis were developed to determine the influence of magnesium content. 相似文献
