International migrations: A framework for directing research.

Current, large-scale, cross-cultural migrations offer promising research targets for the study of human adaptations. The opportunities for such research, however, remain substantially unused in the mainstream of psychology. The purpose here is to provide a framework encompassing components of the migration experience to aid such research. Contextual factors in the sending and receiving societies impinge on the components of the migration experience: social networks, SES, and culture. The components, treated as intertwining transitional experiences in migration, should be juxtaposed in research to examine their effects. Gender and age mediate the effects. The framework aims to benefit research that implicates, directly or heuristically, the experiences of persons exposed to rapid sociocultural change and the consequences of such changes in their lives. Propagation of flicker in electric power networks due to windenergy conversions systems

Wind energy conversion systems (WECS) produce fluctuating output power, which may cause voltage fluctuations and flicker. Flicker assessment in networks may be difficult since its evaluation requires long computing time and special procedures to calculate the flicker severity index, Pst. In this paper, a frequency domain method to study flicker propagation is presented. This method is based on propagation of frequency components from WECS output currents throughout the grid. In this way, a fast flicker analysis in a network of any size can be performed. Also, an algorithm for flicker measurement in the frequency domain, which allows Pst calculation, is proposed. Several study cases have been performed, and results have been compared with time domain simulations, showing good agreement between them     

Immunolocalization of natriuretic peptide receptor B in the rat kidney

The natriuretic peptide receptor (NPR) family consists of three receptor subtypes: two transmembrane forms that contain a guanylyl cyclase intracellular domain (NPR-A and NPR-B), and one truncated form (NPR-C). Because of the lack of specific agonists and antagonists for each receptor subtype and to the difficulty to detect the presence of small quantities of NPR-B by ligand binding studies, polyclonal antibodies against a peptide whose sequence was chosen from a region of the extracellular domain of rat NPR-B that is not homologous to sequences in NPR-A and NPR-C were developed. Western blotting with affinity-purified anti-NPR-B (413-426)-Tyr revealed a polypeptide of approximately 120 kD on COS-1 cell membranes transfected with rat NPR-B cDNA. The antibody recognized a second polypeptide, approximately 5 to 10 kD smaller, which probably represents the unglycosylated receptor. Anti-NPR-B (413-426)-Tyr did not show crossreactivity to any other NPR. Western blotting analysis with anti-NPR-B (413-426)-Tyr also identified a protein of appropriate size in renal vascular membranes. These results were supported by immunohistochemistry findings that demonstrated staining for NPR-B on papillary and medullary capillaries, glomeruli, and renal arteries. This study concludes that NPR-B is present in the rat kidney, although it was only detected in vascular structures.     

Tuning of electronic states in self-assembled InAs quantum dots using an ion implantation technique

We report the tunability of up to 150 meV of the ground state transition of self-assembled InAs quantum dots (QDs) using Mn ion implantation and subsequent annealing. Because of the exciton localization in the quantum dots, the photoluminescence efficiency (T=12K) of the quantum dot transition remains at 80% of its original value after implantation with a Mn dose of 1×10¹³ cm⁻²ions. Strong luminescence still remains at room temperature. At a high implantation dose (1×10¹⁵ cm⁻²) and rapid thermal annealing (700°C for 60s) about 25% of the QD luminescence intensity is recovered at T=12K.     

Advanced thin-film silicon-on-sapphire technology: microwavecircuit applications

This paper reviews the prospects of thin-film silicon-on-sapphire (TFSOS) CMOS technology in microwave applications in the 1-5 GHz regime and beyond and presents the first demonstration of microwave integrated circuits based on this technology, MOSFET's optimized for microwave use, with 0.5-μm optically defined gate lengths and a T-gate structure, have f_t values of 25 GHz (14 GHz) and f_max values of 66 GHz (41 GHz) for n-channel (p-channel) devices and have noise figure values below 1 db at 2 GHz, some of the best reported performance characteristics of any silicon-based MOSFET's to date. On-chip spiral inductors exhibit quality factors above ten. Circuit performance compares favorably with that of other CMOS-based technologies and approach performance levels similar to those obtained by silicon bipolar technologies. The results demonstrate the significant potential of this technology for microwave applications     

Rates of reinfection with Echinococcus granulosus, Taenia hydatigena, taenia ovis and other cestodes in a rural dog population in Uruguay

Forced thinking is an incompletely understood and rarely described epileptic aura. We studied three patients with forced thinking from left frontal lesions, two neoplastic and one vascular. All three experienced repetitive, intrusive thoughts at the onset of seizures. Their forced thinking was associated with the desire to vocalize, orobuccal movements, and speech arrest. The episodes occurred with other ictal manifestations and responded to antiseizure therapy. These patients suggest that epileptic forced thinking is a heterogeneous phenomenon; forced thinking from left frontal lesions is a manifestation of expressive language and is distinct from experiential thoughts arising from temporal limbic foci.     

Effects of growth with ethanol on fermentation and membrane fluidity of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Saccharomyces cerevisiae HSc was grown with ethanol at concentrations up to 10% (v/v). The immediate effects of additions of externally added ethanol on CO₂ production and O₂ consumption of washed organisms were studied by stopped-flow membrane inlet quadrupole mass spectrometry. Fermentative activities of organisms grown with ethanol (0–5% v/v) showed similar sensitivities to inhibition by ethanol, whereas those grown with 10% (v/v) ethanol had become protected and were markedly less sensitive. The fluidity of subcellular membrane fractions was measured by determination of the temperature dependence of the rotational order parameter of the spin label 5-doxyl stearic acid (free radical) by electron spin resonance. Mitochondria prepared from yeasts grown with 0, 7 and 9% (v/v) ethanol showed similar overall fluidity, although differences in temperature-dependent behaviour indicate altered lipid composition or lateral phase separations. On the other hand the microsomal fraction from organisms grown with 9% ethanol showed a remarkable increase in fluidity. These data suggest that the protective effects of growth with ethanol near the limit of tolerance on fermentative activities may arise from altered plasma membrane fluidity properties.
