This paper seeks to examine how considerations of future pedagogy will impact on the student experience. This examination utilises data gathered from a survey of students studying project management. The data are analysed using CATPCA in order to establish the key components of students' experiences. Overall, two key components emerged from the data (representing students' perceptions of what is significant in their project management learning experiences). The first component, transferable skills, addresses parameters such as interpersonal skills, time management, curriculum coherence, critical thinking and communicating. The second component is virtual learning which includes the quality of e-resources and how relevant and accessible information is managed online. We conclude that the effective use of virtual learning environments is more crucial for students who are less skilful at managing their studies independently. This study brings an important contribution to literature on teaching and learning project management as traditionally studies have either focused on teaching and learning (within project management) or students' experiences relating to pedagogic factors generally. The CARIN theory (C. L. Gagné & E. J. Shoben, 1997) proposes that people use statistical knowledge about the relations with which modifiers are typically used to facilitate the interpretation of modifier–noun combinations. However, research on semantic patterns in compounding has suggested that regularities tend to be associated with pairings of semantic categories, rather than individual concepts (e.g., P. Maguire, E. J. Wisniewski, & G. Storms, in press; B. Warren, 1978). In the present study, the authors investigated whether people are sensitive to interactional semantic patterns in compounding. Experiment 1 demonstrated that the influence of a given modifier on ease of interpretation varies depending on the semantic category of the head. Experiment 2 demonstrated that the relation preference of the head noun influences ease of interpretation when the semantic category of the modifier is compatible with that preference. In light of these findings, the authors suggest that people are sensitive to how different semantic categories tend to be paired in combination and that this information is used to facilitate the interpretation process. The use of Geographic Information or GI, has grown rapidly in recent years. Previous research has identified the importance of usability and user centred design in enabling the proliferation and exploitation of GI. However, the design and development of usable GI is not simply a matter of applying the tried and tested usability methods that have been developed for software and web design. Dealing with data and specifically GI brings with it a number of issues that change the way usability and user centred design can be applied. This paper describes the outcomes of a workshop held in March 2010 exploring the core issues relating to GI usability. The workshop brought together an international group of twenty experts in both human factors and GI, from a wide range of academic and industrial backgrounds. These experts considered three key issues, the stakeholders in GI, key challenges applying usability to GI and the usability methods that can be successfully applied to GI. The result of this workshop was to identify some areas for future research, such as the production of meaningful metadata and the implications of blurring of the line between data producers and data consumers. 相似文献

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common complication post‐orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). Development of CKD is detected by monitoring serum urea and creatinine, however disease can occasionally be at an advanced stage before they become abnormal. Therefore, more accurate parameters are required. In order to identify novel biomarkers of CKD, serum was obtained from 47 OLT recipients with CKD (glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min) and 23 with normal renal function (glomerular filtration rate >90 mL/min). Using the proteomic technique SELDI‐TOF‐MS, three protein biomarkers (55.6 kDa, 9.5 kDa and 11.4 kDa) were identified that, together, could stratify patients into cases or controls with a sensitivity and specificity of 93.6 and 91.3%, respectively. The area under the curve was 0.94. The primary splitter of the groups at 55.6 kDa was an alternative version of a molecule at 27.8 kDa, which was subsequently identified by 1‐D SDS‐PAGE and LC‐ESI‐MS/MS to be Apolipoprotein AI. Protein expression was shown to be reduced in CKD, by both ELISA (p = 0.057) and Western blot analysis (p = 0.003). Apolipoprotein AI is a novel, accurate marker of CKD post‐OLT. It does require further validation in a large, more diverse patient population but could potentially improve detection of CKD. 相似文献

Vision problems of preschool children are detectable with a comprehensive eye examination; however, it is estimated that only 14% of children below the age of 6 years receive an eye examination. Screening is advocated as a cost-effective alternative to identify children in need of further vision care. Thirty-four states recommend or require vision screening of preschool children. Although laws and guidelines exist, only 21% of preschool children are actually screened for vision problems. There is little agreement concerning the best screening methods, and no validated, highly effective model for screening vision of preschool children. Newer screening tests have been designed specifically for preschool populations, and can be administered by lay screeners. Many have not been validated. Several are recommended by states or organizations without convincing scientific evidence of their effectiveness. This paper summarizes current laws and guidelines for preschool vision screening in the United States, reviews advantages and disadvantages of several test procedures, and provides recommendations for developing future preschool vision screening programs. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the roles of certain potential risk factors on the vertical transmission of HIV-1. DESIGN: Prospective registry of infants born to HIV-1-infected women in Catalonia (north-east Spain) from 1987 to 1992. METHODS: A total of 599 infants, born in Catalan hospitals to 520 women who were identified as being HIV-1-infected during gestation or at delivery, were included. Data on mode of delivery, birth weight, gestational age and breast-feeding as well as the mother's age, her route of HIV-1 infection, clinical stage and p24 antigenaemia, were recorded. HIV-1 infection status of 489 (82%) of the infants was determined according to the criteria of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Risk estimates and odds ratio (OR) were calculated and logistic regression was performed. RESULTS: The overall rate of vertical transmission was 18.6% (95% confidence interval, 15.2-22.0%). Multivariate analyses revealed that Cesarean section was associated with a lower rate of vertical transmission (OR = 0.3; P = 0.001), as was maternal HIV-1 infection via injecting drug use (OR = 0.44; P = 0.02). Breast-feeding (OR = 6.9; P = 0.001), very low birth weight (< 1500 g; OR = 6.3; P = 0.001) and p24 antigenaemia (OR = 4.6; P = 0.04) were all related to increased risk. The crude rate of HIV-1 transmission was 6% among Cesarean births compared with 21% for infants born via vaginal deliveries. The population-attributable risk for vaginal deliveries was 61.7%. CONCLUSIONS: The results show a protective effect of Cesarean section in the absence of zidovudine prophylaxis. However, current research should be directed towards the individual and combined effects that antiretroviral agents and Cesarean section may have on mother-to-child HIV-1 infection. 相似文献

The diverse physiological actions of galanin are thought to be mediated through activation of galanin receptors (GalRs). We report the genomic and cDNA cloning of a mouse GalR that possesses a genomic structure distinct from that of GalR1 and encodes a functional galanin receptor. The mouse GalR gene consists of two exons separated by a single intron within the protein-coding region. The splicing site for the intron is located at the junction between the third transmembrane domain and the second intracellular loop. The cDNA encodes a 370-amino acid putative G protein-coupled receptor that is markedly different from human GalR1 and rat GalR3 (38 and 57%) but shares high homology with rat GalR2 (94%). In binding studies utilizing membranes from COS-7 cells transfected with mouse GalR2 cDNA, the receptor displayed high affinity (K(D) = 0.47 nM) and saturable binding with 125I-galanin (Bmax = 670 fmol/mg). The radioligand binding can be displaced by galanin and its analogues in a rank order: galanin approximately = M40 approximately = M15 approximately = M35 approximately = C7 approximately = galanin(2-29) approximately = galanin(1-16) > galanin(10-29) approximately = galanin(3-29), which resembles the pharmacological profile of the rat GalR2. Receptor activation by galanin in COS-7 cells stimulated phosphoinositide metabolism, which was not reversed by pertussis toxin. Thus, the galanin receptor encoded in the cloned mouse GalR gene is the type 2 galanin receptor and is active in both ligand binding and signaling assays. 相似文献

The CorA transport system is the major Mg2+ influx pathway for bacteria and the Archaea. CorA contains three C-terminal transmembrane segments. No conserved charged residues are apparent within the membrane, suggesting that Mg2+ influx does not involve electrostatic interactions. We have mutated conserved residues within the third transmembrane segment to identify sites involved in transport. Mutation of conserved aromatic residues at either end of the membrane segment to alternative aromatic amino acids did not affect total cation uptake or cation affinity. Mutation to alanine greatly diminished uptake with little change in cation affinity implying that the conserved aromatic residues play a structural role in stabilizing this membrane segment of CorA at the interface between the bilayer and the aqueous environment. In contrast, mutation of Tyr292, Met299, and Tyr307 greatly altered the transport properties of CorA. Y292F, Y292S, Y292C, or Y292I mutations essentially abolished transport, without effect on expression or membrane insertion. M299C and M299A mutants exhibited a decrease in cation affinity for Mg2+, Co2+, or Ni2+ of 10-50-fold without a significant change in uptake capacity. Mutations at Tyr307 had no significant effect on cation uptake capacity; however, the affinity of Y307F and Y307A mutations for Mg2+ and Co2+ was decreased 3-10-fold, while affinity for Ni2+ was unchanged compared with the wild type CorA. In contrast, the affinity of the Y307S mutant for all three cations was decreased 2-5-fold. Projection of the third transmembrane segment as an alpha-helix suggests that Tyr292, Met299, and Tyr307 all reside on the same face of the alpha-helix. We interpret the transport data to suggest that a hydroxyl group is important at Tyr307, and that these three residues interact with Mg2+ during transport, forming part of the cation pore or channel within CorA. 相似文献
