Optical switching of a GaAs triangular barrier switch grown by MBE

A 100 ?m-diameter GaAs triangular barrier switch (TBS) has been optically switched using a GaAlAs laser diode. The resulting transient response has been measured to have a leading edge of ~ 295 ps.     

Measurement of Torsion from Multitemporal Images of the Eye Using Digital Signal Processing Techniques

Two methods of measuring ocular torsion from digital images of the eyes were developed and tested. One method measures torsion from the translation of two landmarks using a rectilinear coordinate system. The second method measures torsion from the translation of two landmarks using a polar coordinate system. The center for the polar sampling is the center of the pupil. After thresholding and filtering the images, landmark translation is measured from the interpolated peak in the normalized cross correlation of the reference landmark with the image.     

Some Observations on the Role of Dopants in Phase Transitions in Zirconia from Atomistic Simulations

Attempts to calculate the free energy of the polymorphs of zirconia are reported. The results suggest a theoretical basis for the phase transitions in terms of the removal of lattice instabilities (evidenced by imaginary phonon frequencies). Dopant stabilization of the higher symmetry structures is seen to arise because of changes to the phonon frequencies due to the different mass and effective charge of the dopant.     

Orally active, hydrolytically stable, semisynthetic, antimalarial trioxanes in the artemisinin family

In only three chemical operations, natural trioxane lactone artemisinin (1) was converted into a series of C-10 carbon-substituted 10-deoxoartemisinin compounds 4-9. The three steps involved lactone reduction, replacement of the anomeric lactol OH by F using diethylaminosulfur trifluoride, and finally boron trifluoride-promoted substitution of F by aryl, heteroaryl, and acetylide nucleophiles. All of these C-10 nonacetal, chemically robust, enantiomerically pure compounds 4-9 have high antimalarial potencies in vitro against Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasites, and furans 5a and 5b and pyrrole 7a are antimalarially potent also in vivo even when administered to rodents orally.     

Small vessel enhancement in MRA images using local maximum meanprocessing

The enhancement of small vessels in MRA imaging is an important problem. In this paper, we propose using local maximum mean (LMM) processing to enhance the detectability of small vessels. At each voxel in the original three-dimensional (3-D) data set, the LMM over the line segments in the cube centered at the voxel is taken and used to form the 3-D LMM data set. The maximum intensity projection (MIP) is then applied to the LMM data to produce the two-dimensional (2-D) LMM-MIP image. Through LMM processing, the variance of background tissue is reduced, thus increasing the detectability of small vessels. Moreover, the single bright voxels are suppressed and the disconnected small vessels can be connected. However, the LMM processing widens the larger, brighter vessels. To keep the advantages provided by both the LMM-MIP and MIP images, it is proposed that weight functions be used to combine them. The performance of the LMM-MIP algorithm is analyzed and compared with the performance of the MIP algorithm under three measures: The vessel voxel projection probability, the vessel receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and the vessel-tissue contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). Closed forms of the three measures are obtained. It is shown that the LMM-MIP algorithm improves the detectability of small vessels under all three measures. The longer the projection path and the larger the CNR of the original data, then the greater the improvement. Confirming the theoretical analysis, results of an experiment utilizing practical MRA data demonstrate the improved visual quality of small vessels.     

Planar-junction, top-illuminated GaInAs/InP pin photodiode with bandwidth of 25 GHz

A top-illuminated GaInAs/InP pin photodiode has been produced in a planar-junction configuration, which combines high reliability (no change in dark current over 4700 h at 175 degrees C) with the widest bandwidth (25 GHz), and highest quantum efficiency (80% at 1.55 mu m), yet reported for this type of device.<>
