Using small-angle scattering, together with density measurements, X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, and both transmission and scanning electron microscopy, the microstructural evolution during sintering in nanostructured ceramic oxides has been studied. The availability of samples with sufficient size and uniformity has permitted absolute calibration of the scattering data and made possible determinations of microstructural parameters and surface areas that are statistically representative of the undisturbed nanophase morphologies. A fully quantitative microstructural model has been developed, and the effects of varying processing parameters during powder synthesis and sintering have been assessed. Predictions are made regarding the achievable sintered full-density microstructures. 相似文献

Surface temperatures were measured on dry Douglas fir sapwood specimens during Cone Calorimeter tests using thermocouples and an infra-red pyrometer. Good agreement between the thermocouples and the pyrometer was obtained when (1) the emissivity was assumed to be 1.0 and (2) the thermocouples were in good contact with the surface and were not located in the proximity of a fissure. The major fissures were normal to the grain of the wood and the volatiles vented through the fissures. Char oxidation in the region between the vertical fissures resulted in higher surface temperatures. 相似文献

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether therapy with nitroglycerin (GTN) would lead to abnormal coronary artery responses to the endothelium-dependent vasodilator acetylcholine. BACKGROUND: Nitroglycerin therapy is associated with specific biochemical changes in the vasculature that may lead to increased vascular sensitivity to vasoconstrictors. METHODS: Patients were randomized to continuous transdermal GTN, 0.6 mg/h (n = 8), or no therapy (n = 7), for 5 days prior to a diagnostic catheterization. Patients had similar risk factors for endothelial dysfunction. Quantitative angiography was performed in the morning to measure the mean luminal diameter of the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) in response to intracoronary acetylcholine (peak concentration, 10(-4) mol/liter). The transdermal preparation was removed from the GTN group, and 3 h later experimental procedures were repeated. RESULTS: In the morning, the GTN group experienced greater coronary constriction in response to acetylcholine infusion than those not receiving GTN (-19.6+/-4.2 vs. -3.8+/-3.0%; p = 0.01). Three hours later, the GTN group continued to display greater constriction to acetylcholine (-24.1+/-5.9%) as compared to the non-GTN group (-1.8+/-4.8%). When the morning and afternoon responses to acetylcholine were compared, the increase in coronary constriction in the GTN group was greater than the change observed in the non-GTN group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that therapy with GTN causes abnormal coronary vasomotor responses to the endothelium-dependent vasodilator acetylcholine, changes that were persistent for up to 3 hours after GTN discontinuation. This nitrate-associated vasomotor dysfunction has implications with respect to the development of nitrate tolerance and the potential for adverse events during nitrate withdrawal. 相似文献

A review of liver trauma treated by the major trauma care facilities of Tasmania in the 5 year period between 1989 and 1993 is presented. The aim of this retrospective review was to provide an audit of the management of liver trauma in the island of Tasmania and to analyse the risk factors contributing to mortality and major morbidity. Thirty-seven patients were treated with a median Injury Severity Score (ISS) of 14 (range 9-34). The overall mortality rate of this series was 5.8%. Age, mechanism of injury (blunt or penetrating), delay prior to hospital presentation and modality of treatment (operative or non-operative) were not significant risk factors for mortality and morbidity; however, transfusion requirement of over 10 units of blood (P < 0.005), ISS score of over 20 (P < 0.0005), haemodynamic instability at presentation (P < 0.05) and a Hepatic Injury Score (HIS) grade of 3 or more (P < 0.05) were statistically significant risk factors. 相似文献

This correspondence presents a scheme for artifact reduction of low bit rate discrete-cosine-transform-compressed (DCT-compressed) images. First, the DC coefficients are calibrated using gradient continuity constraints. Then, an improved Huber-Markov-random-field-based (HMRF-based) smoothing is applied. The constrained optimization is implemented by the iterative conditional mode (ICM). Electrolyte addition to nonionic contrast media has been suggested to further reduce the incidence of ventricular fibrillation during coronary arteriography. The present study was designed to investigate the effects of adding 30 mM NaCl, 0.9 mM KCl, 0.15 mM CaCl2 and 0.1 mM MgCl2 to iohexol on cardiac electrophysiology and hemodynamics (iohexol+electrolytes = IPE). Contrast media were injected into the left main coronary artery in 9 open-chest, anesthetized dogs before and after induction of acute ischemic heart failure. IPE increased left ventricular inotropy (LV dP/dtmax) with no initial decrease, even during heart failure. During heart failure IPE induced the same hemodynamic effects as iohexol without electrolyte addition. IPE slightly lengthened epicardial monophasic action potential duration before heart failure. We conclude that IPE appears to be well tolerated hemodynamically. The electrophysiologic differences between IPE and iohexol are small when the injection time is not longer than 5 s. 相似文献

Prostacyclin (or epoprostenol), an arachidonic acid metabolite, is an effective treatment for patients with primary pulmonary hypertension. Interruption of chronic prostacyclin infusion can result in recurrent symptoms of dyspnea and fatigue. The etiology of this phenomenon is unknown. We hypothesized that sympathoadrenal activation could lead to increased vascular tone after abrupt termination of the infusion. To evaluate this effect, we monitored six chronically instrumented, awake sheep during and after infusion of prostacyclin. Prostacyclin decreased mean arterial pressure (MAP) by 14% and increased cardiac output by 33%. After the infusion ceased, MAP rebounded 23% above baseline, and cardiac output decreased by 28% from peak values within 10 min. We were unable to demonstrate an increase in norepinephrine levels after cessation of prostacyclin, nor did alpha-adrenergic blockade affect postinfusion hemodynamics. However, plasma renin activity increased >10-fold at peak infusion and remained elevated for up to 2 h after discontinuation of prostacyclin. Coinfusion of the angiotensin II-receptor antagonist L-158,809 resulted in complete abrogation of the postcessation rise in MAP. We conclude that renin-angiotensin system activation is primarily responsible for systemic hypertension occurring after abrupt cessation of prostacyclin infusion in sheep and that angiotensin II receptor blockade prevents this response. Our data do not support a role for sympathetic nervous system activation in the systemic pressor response after prostacyclin infusion. 相似文献

We have studied the role of proteoglycans in the function of Macrophage Inflammatory Protein-1 alpha (MIP-1alpha), a member of the proteoglycan binding chemokine family. Sequence and peptide analysis has identified a basic region within MIP-1alpha which appears to be the major determinant of proteoglycan binding and we have now produced a mutant of MIP-1alpha lacking the basic charges on two of the amino acids within this proteoglycan binding site. This mutant (Hep Mut) appears to have lost the ability to bind to proteoglycans. Bioassay of Hep Mut indicates that it has retained stem cell inhibitory properties but has a compromised activity as a monocyte chemoattractant, thus suggesting uncoupling of these two properties of MIP-1alpha. Receptor studies have indicated that the inactivity of Hep Mut on human monocytes correlates with its inability to bind to CCR1, a cloned human MIP-1alpha receptor. In addition, studies using proteoglycan deficient cells transfected with CCR1 have indicated that the proteoglycan binding site in MIP-1alpha is a site that is also involved in the docking of MIP-1alpha to the monocyte receptor. The site for interaction with the stem cell receptor must therefore be distinct, suggesting that MIP-1alpha utilizes different receptors for these two different biological processes. 相似文献

Studies were conducted examining the subcellular distribution of β-carotene (BC), α-tocopherol (E) and retinol (A) in livers
of control and BC-fed male White Leghorn chicks. Chicks were fed Cornell B chick starter diet with or without the addition
of 0.5 g BC/kg diet. A first study involved liver fractionation by differential centrifugation in 0.25 M sucrose followed
by high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) analyses of all fractions for quantitation of BC, E and A. A second study
employed both intravenous injection of Triton WR-1339 four days prior to sacrifice and centrifugation in 1.0 M sucrose to
separate mitochondria from lysosomes more efficiently. Fraction purity was assessed by marker enzyme analyses. Results showed
that (i) chick liver accumulated BC; (ii) BC-fed chicks had higher concentrations of BC in all fractions relative to controls,
and (iii) the mitochondrial fraction contained the highest concentration of BC, followed by lysosomes, microsomes and nuclei,
respectively. Plasma BC increased more than fivefold in BC-fed chicks. Dietary BC increased A and E levels in liver and in
the mitochondrial and lysosomal fractions while the plasma E level was decreased. Plasma A changed little with BC feeding.
While dietary BC had no effect on fatty acid composition of subcellular fractions, the increase in E resulted in a large increase
in the molar ratio of E to polyunsaturated fatty acids. The incorporation of BC and increased amounts of E into cellular mebranes

Far infrared phase and amplitude reflectivity measurements have been made on two bulk CdxHg1?xTe mixed crystals with composition x=0.29 and x=0.22 by dispersive Fourier transform spectroscopy (DFTS). The results have been used to calculate the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function (?′, ?″) from the Fresnel relations. A plasma contribution is observed in the spectra in addition to the phonon response. For both samples a broad but weak reflection band around 95–105 cm?1 is observed as well as the expected two-oscillator response from the HgTe-like and CdTe-like optical phonons. This feature is attributed to absorption due to phonon combination bands, but it is too broad to enable assignments to be made. There is no evidence of additional features in the CdTe region due to clustering. 相似文献
