In this paper, we review the suitability of diamond as a semiconductor material for high-performance electronic applications. The current status of the manufacture of synthetic diamond is reviewed and assessed. In particular, we consider the quality of intrinsic material now available and the challenges in making doped structures suitable for practical devices. Two practical applications are considered in detail. First, the development of high-voltage switches capable of switching voltages in excess of 10 kV. Second, the development of diamond MESFETs for high-frequency and high-power applications. Here device data are reported showing a current density of more than 30 mA mm(-1) along with small-signal RF measurements demonstrating gigahertz operation. We conclude by considering the remaining challenges which will need to be overcome if commercially attractive diamond electronic devices are to be manufactured.  相似文献

A highly efficient Talbot array illuminator for single-shot, laser-induced-damage test measurements of optical thin-film coatings is proposed. With a periodic binary phase grating, a laser beam is transformed into an ensemble of Gaussian-like spots, which are known as the Fresnel image of the grating. For this purpose hexagonal phase gratings were fabricated and analyzed. With a peak fluence distribution of ~1 order of magnitude, the damage threshold of thin films can be deduced by use of the data from only a single shot.  相似文献

Sequence analysis of a 237 kb genomic fragment from the central region of the MHC has revealed that the HLA-B and HLA-C genes are contained within duplicated segments peri-B (53 kb) and peri-C (48 kb), respectively, and separated by an intervening sequence (IF) of 30 kb. The peri-B and peri-C segments share at least 90% sequence homology except when interrupted by insertions/deletions including Alu, L1, an endogenous retrovirus, and pseudogenes. The sequences of peri-B, IF, and peri-C were searched for the presence of Alu elements to use as markers of evolution, chromosomal rearrangements, and polymorphism. Of 29 Alu elements, 14 were identified in peri-B, 11 in peri-C, and 4 in IF. The Alu elements in peri-B and peri-C clustered phylogenetically into two clades which were classified as "preduplication" and "postduplication" clades. Four Alu J elements that are shared by peri-B and peri-C and are flanked by homologous sequences in their paralogous locations, respectively, clustered into a "preduplication" clade. By contrast, the majority of Alu elements, which are unique to either peri-B or peri-C, clustered into a postduplication clade together with the Alu consensus subfamily members ranging from platyrrhine-specific (Spqxcg) to catarrhine-specific Alu sequences (Y). The insertion of platyrrhine-specific Alu elements in postduplication locations of peri-B and peri-C implies that these two segments are the products of a duplication which occurred in primates prior to the divergence of the New World primate from the human lineage (35-44 mya). Examination of the paralogous Alu integration sites revealed that 9 of 14 postduplication Alu sequences have produced microsatellites of different length and sequence within the Alu 3'-poly A tail. The present analysis supports the hypothesis that HLA-B and HLA-C genes are products of an extended segmental duplication between 44 and 81 million years ago (mya), and that subsequent diversification of both genomic segments occurred because of the mobility and mutation of retroelements such as Alu repeats.  相似文献

We report on a Nd:YLF laser that operates at 1053 nm without optical intracavity elements for the suppression of the stronger 1047-nm transition. The Nd:YLF crystal is end pumped by a fiber optically coupled 10-W diode-laser bar. The different thermal-lensing focal lengths of the two main lasing wavelengths in a plane-parallel resonator were used to achieve the selection by tilting the end mirror slightly from its optimum position for maximum output power. With 9.8-W cw diode-laser-pumping power the 1053-nm Nd:YLF laser produces a maximum output power of 1.9 W in cw operation and nearly 1 W of average power at a Q-switch repetition rate of 15 kHz. The highest slope efficiency of 47% achieved in cw operation.  相似文献

Organic UV filters are used in personal care products such as sunscreen products, and in cosmetics, beauty creams, skin lotions, lipsticks, hair sprays, hair dyes, shampoos, and so forth. The compounds enter the aquatic environmentfrom showering, wash-off, washing (laundering), and so forth via wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) ("indirect inputs") and from recreational activities such as swimming and bathing in lakes and rivers ("direct inputs"). In this study, we investigated the occurrence of four important organic UV filter compounds (benzophenone-3, BP-3; 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, 4-MBC; ethylhexyl methoxy cinnamate, EHMC; octocrylene, OC) in wastewater, and in water and fish from various Swiss lakes, using gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric analyses. All four UV filters were present in untreated wastewater (WWTP influent) with a maximum concentration of 19 microg L(-1) for EHMC. The data indicate a seasonal variation with influent loads higher in the warmer season (June 2002) than in the colder one (April 2002). The influent loads were in the order EHMC > 4-MBC approximately BP-3 > OC. The concentrations in treated wastewater (WWTP effluent) were considerably lower, indicating substantial elimination in the plants. 4-MBC was usually the most prevalent compound (maximum concentration, 2.7 microg L(-1)), followed by BP-3, EHMC, and OC. UV filters were also detected in Swiss midland lakes and a river (Limmat) receiving inputs from WWTPs and recreational activities. However, all concentrations were low (<2-35 ng L(-1)); no UV filters (<2 ng L(-1)) were detected in a remote mountain lake. Data from passive sampling using semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) supported the presence of these UV filters in the lakes and the river and suggested some potential for accumulation of these compounds in biota. SPMD-derived water concentrations increased in the order Greifensee < Zürichsee < Hüttnersee. This order is reversed from that observed for methyl triclosan, used as a chemical marker for WWTP-derived lipophilic contaminants in the lakes. This indicated inputs of UV filters from sources other than WWTPs to the lakes during summer,for example,inputs from recreational activities. Fish (white fish, Coregonus sp.; roach, Rutilus rutilus; perch, Perca fluviatilis) from these lakes contained low but detectable concentrations of UV filters, in particular, 4-MBC (up to 166 ng g(-1) on a lipid basis). 4-MBC concentrations relative to methyl triclosan were lower in fish than in SPMDs exposed in the same lakes, suggesting that 4-MBC is less bioaccumulated than expected or metabolized in fish. The lipid-based bioconcentration factor (BCF(L)) estimated from the fish (roach) data and SPMD-derived water concentrations was about 1-2.3 x 10(4) and thus approximately 1 order of magnitude lower than expected from its Kow value.  相似文献

The combination of gallium nitride (GaN) device technology with the now well established efficiency enhancing Doherty power amplifier (PA) architecture is presented for the first time. The experimental structure exhibits a power density of approximately 1 W/mm and linearity that remains comparable to that observed in other GaAs structures, demonstrating that GaN can be highly effective when used within this type of PA architecture.  相似文献

We show here that limited proteolysis can probe the structural and dynamic differences between the holo and apo form of horse myoglobin (Mb). Initial nicking of the polypeptide chain of apoMb (153 amino acid residues, no disulfide bonds) by several proteases (subtilisin, thermolysin, chymotrypsin and trypsin) occurs at the level of chain segment 89-96. In contrast, holoMb is resistant to proteolytic digestion when reacted under identical experimental conditions. Such selective proteolysis implies that the F-helix of native holoMb (residues 82 to 97) is disordered in apoMb, thus enabling binding and adaptation of this chain segment at the active site of the proteolytic enzymes for an efficient peptide bond fission. That essentially only the F-helix in apoMb is largely disrupted was earlier inferred from spectroscopic measurements and molecular dynamics simulations. The results of this study provide direct experimental evidence for this and emphasize therefore that limited proteolysis is a useful and reliable method for probing structure and dynamics of proteins, complementing other experimental techniques such as NMR and X-ray crystallography.  相似文献

We present experimental results on the intracavity generation of radially polarized light by incorporation of a polarization-selective mirror in a CO(2)-laser resonator. The selectivity is achieved with a simple binary dielectric diffraction grating etched in the backsurface of the mirror substrate. Very high polarization selectivity was achieved, and good agreement of simulation and experimental results is shown. The overall radial polarization purity of the generated laser beam was found to be higher than 90%.  相似文献

We report on the results of proton and gamma irradiation tests performed on nonlinear crystals for second- (SHG) and third-harmonic generation. Beta-barium borate (BBO), lithium triborate (LBO), and KTP crystals were exposed to three different energies of proton radiation (8, 70, and 300 MeV) and incremental doses of gamma radiation (up to 139 krad) in order to investigate the change in SHG performance and transmission spectra. BBO and LBO crystals turned out to be a suitable choice for SHG under radiative conditions.  相似文献
