Presents results of 3 studies on the psychometric properties of the LP-ABC (M. Loranger and M. Pépin, 1993), a French-language instrument for assessing general functioning in adults with mental retardation. The studies involved a total of 299 male and female Canadian adults with mental retardation. Results confirm the internal consistency, construct validity, criterion validity, discriminant validity, interrater reliability, and test–retest reliability of the LP-ABC. Primary hybrid total hip arthroplasty: an interim followup

The senior authors' initial experience with primary hybrid hip replacement in patients with osteoarthritis was studied to evaluate the efficacy of the procedure. Hybrid total hip arthroplasty (uncemented Harris-Galante acetabular component and cemented Iowa precoated femoral component) was performed in 131 consecutive, nonselected hips in 118 patients with the diagnosis of primary osteoarthritis. Followup was performed at 8 to 9 years after the procedure. The average age at the time of the procedure was 68 years (range, 45-87 years). There were 50 men (55 hips) and 68 women (76 hips). At final followup 19 patients (22 hips) had died. The femoral component had been revised for aseptic loosening in 8 hips (6.1%). One additional hip showed definite radiographic loosening. Hence, the prevalence of radiographic femoral failure was 6.9% (9 hips). No acetabular component had been revised for aseptic loosening and no acetabular component had migrated. The senior author continues to perform hybrid total hip arthroplasty in all patients with primary osteoarthritis. However, design modifications have been made in the femoral component that is used.     

Involvement of protein kinase C in agonist-stimulated goldfish ovulation

The effects of two protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitors, calphostin C and staurosporine, on the in vitro ovulation of goldfish (Carassius auratus) oocytes were investigated. Ovulation was stimulated by prostaglandin (PG) F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha, 2.0 micrograms/ml), by sodium orthovanadate (0.1 mM), by a combination of the phorbol ester phorbol 12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA, 0.1 micrograms/ml) and calcium ionophore A23187 (0.05 micrograms/ml), by thapsigargin (0.2 micrograms/ml), and by elevated pH (8.1). In addition, the effects of these inhibitors on the PKC activity of the goldfish follicle wall was determined by use of a specific peptide substrate phosphorylation assay. At 0.1 microM, staurosporine significantly blocked ovulation induced by all agents. However, at lower (0.01 microM) levels it blocked only PMA/A23187-induced ovulation. In contrast, calphostin significantly blocked only PMA/A23187-induced ovulation, although there was a decrease in pH-induced ovulation at lower calphostin concentrations. Both calphostin and staurosporine blocked follicular PKC activity at levels that were inhibitory to ovulation. In addition, staurosporine significantly blocked PKC activity at levels even lower than those needed to block ovulation. The combined results suggest that orthovanadate, PGF2 alpha, and thapsigargin do not require PKC activation for the induction of ovulation, whereas PMA/A23187 does.     

Golden interfaces: The Surface of Self-Assembled Monolayers

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiols and disulfides on gold form organic interfaces with properties largely controlled by the end groups of the molecules composing the film. SAMs provide a unique link between the science of organic surfaces and technologies that seek to exploit their adaptable character. Many techniques are useful for probing the structure of SAMs although only scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at picoamperes reveals the details of the packing of their end groups at the sub-angstrom level. This review demonstrates that STM effectively tests new types of control over the microscopic structure–property relationships characteristic of SAMs on gold that should prove useful to their application.     

La réputation sociale de l'enfant en milieu scolaire.

Studied the social reputations of elementary school children. Ss were 76 2nd-grade (mean age 7.5 yrs), 71 3rd-grade (mean age 8.5 yrs), and 83 4th-grade students (mean age 9.7 yrs). Using the peer nomination technique, Ss were assessed collectively on 8 dimensions requiring both social and academic judgments. A cluster analysis was performed to identify groups with different sociometric profiles. Correlations between peer evaluations and teacher evaluations of Ss' social reputations were determined. Early American neurologic textbooks

Although European treatises were translated and available to American doctors interested in neurology during the 19th century, the early American neurologic textbooks were distinctive in their comprehensive integration of basic and clinical science. William A. Hammond, in 1871, published the first comprehensive American textbook of neurology, preceding the manuals by Gowers (1886) and Oppenheim (1894) by more than a decade. Four other American adult neurologic textbooks expanded on Hammond's model and incorporated other important topics, including neurologic anatomy, the formal examination, neurochemistry, and complete bibliographies. Bernard Sachs' 1895 textbook was the first pediatric neurologic textbook published in America and made significant contributions to the organization of childhood neurologic disorders. These works functioned as centralized resources for neurologic information, were influential educational tools, and helped foster a growing appreciation of the American neurologic school both nationally and internationally.

Recent developments of stability control in mines, essentially based on Ge-doped fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) are reported including results about the different aspects of the system: accurate characterizations of FBG, sensor network topology and multiplexing method, user interface design and sensor packaging     

Standards and industrial property

This article is primarily concerned with standards seen as a means for collective appropriation of technological information. It begins with an attempt to throw light on the relationships between standards, patents and licenses. Then we develop a two-stage duopolistic model whereby each firm must decide on a programme of standardization before choosing its level of production. The risks of multiple or inefficient equilibria are strong enough to justify the intervention of standardization organizations to inform and coordinate individual firms. But the paper also explains why some organizations likeetsi try to play a new role by promoting open access to master patents when used in the definition of a standard.
