This study addresses economic aspects of introducing renewable technologies in place of fossil fuel ones to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Unlike for traditional fossil fuel technologies, greenhouse gas emissions from renewable technologies are associated mainly with plant construction and the magnitudes are significantly lower. The prospects are shown to be good for producing the environmentally clean fuel hydrogen via water electrolysis driven by renewable energy sources. Nonetheless, the cost of wind- and solar-based electricity is still higher than that of electricity generated in a natural gas power plant. With present costs of wind and solar electricity, it is shown that, when electricity from renewable sources replaces electricity from natural gas, the cost of greenhouse gas emissions abatement is about four times less than if hydrogen from renewable sources replaces hydrogen produced from natural gas. When renewable-based hydrogen is used in a fuel cell vehicle instead of gasoline in a IC engine vehicle, the cost of greenhouse gas emissions reduction approaches the same value as for renewable-based electricity only if the fuel cell vehicle efficiency exceeds significantly (i.e., by about two times) that of an internal combustion vehicle. It is also shown that when 6000 wind turbines (Kenetech KVS-33) with a capacity of 350 kW and a capacity factor of 24% replace a 500-MW gas-fired power plant with an efficiency of 40%, annual greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by 2.3 megatons. The incremental additional annual cost is about $280 million (US). The results provide a useful approach to an optimal strategy for greenhouse gas emissions mitigation.  相似文献

For arbitrary Reynolds number Re, aFNS theory O(1; δ2; δ3) significance scaled state variable achieves analytical closure of rigorously space filtered thermal, multi-species Navier–Stokes (NS) conservation principle partial differential equation (PDE) system well-posed on bounded domains (Part I). Validation of boundary commutation error (BCE) and nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition (DBC) resolution strategies results in ADh-GWSh-BCEh-DBCh algorithm coupling with aFNS theory optimal Galerkin GWSh?+?θTS CFD algorithm (Part II), including accuracy/convergence assessments. For Reynolds numbers ranging E+02 <Re?<?2E+04, aFNS theory fully coupled k?=?1 basis Galerkin CFD code generated a posteriori data enable theory quantitative validation. For assured laminar Re range, NS no-slip BC reduced and coupled aFNS theory code predicted quasi-steady thermal-velocity transition to periodic unsteady is validated via linear stability predicted critical Re. For Re exceeding assured laminar, theory coupled CFD data quantify spatial filtering annihilation of (laminar) NS predicted large wave number spectral content. For sufficiently large Re, coupled CFD code a posteriori data document first principles prediction of unsteady periodic wall attached velocity profile transitioning-from-laminar, then separation, fully turbulent profile reattachment followed by relaminarization. These large Re CFD data as well enable validation of perturbation theory O(1; δ2; δ3) significance scaled state variable, ADh-GWSh-DBCh algorithm prediction of O(δ2) state variable non-homogeneous Dirichlet BC DOF data and in concert thoroughly quantify theory generated O(δ2; δ3) state variable distributions.  相似文献

Streptococcus uberis is an important cause of mastitis in dairy cows throughout the world, particularly during the dry period, the period around calving, and during early lactation. Strategies for controlling Strep. uberis mastitis are poorly defined and are currently inadequate. Objectives of the present study were to evaluate efficacy of ceftiofur, a new broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic, for treatment of experimentally induced Strep. uberis intramammary infections (IMI) in lactating dairy cows during early lactation and to determine whether extended therapy regimens enhanced efficacy of ceftiofur. Efficacy of extended ceftiofur intramammary therapy regimens was investigated in 37 mammary quarters of 23 dairy cows that developed clinical mastitis following experimental infection with Strep. uberis during early lactation. Cows that developed clinical mastitis during the challenge period were allocated randomly to 3 groups representing 3 different ceftiofur treatment regimens: 2-d (n = 7 mammary quarters), 5-d (n = 16 mammary quarters), and 8-d (n = 14 mammary quarters) treatment regimens. For all groups, 125 mg of ceftiofur hydrochloride was administered via intramammary infusion. A bacteriological cure was defined as an experimentally infected quarter that was treated and was bacteriologically negative for the presence of Strep. uberis at 7, 14, 21, and 28 d posttreatment. Percentage of Strep. uberis IMI eliminated was 43, 88, and 100% for the 2-, 5-, and 8-d ceftiofur treatment regimens, respectively. Both the 5- and 8-d ceftiofur extended therapy treatment regimens had significantly higher bacterial cure rates than the standard 2-d ceftiofur treatment regimen. The bacterial cure rate of the 8-d ceftiofur extended therapy group was marginally better (P = 0.052) than the 5-d ceftiofur extended therapy group. Results of this study indicate that ceftiofur therapy was effective for eliminating Strep. uberis experimental IMI, and 5- and 8-d extended ceftiofur therapy regimens were more effective than the standard 2-d treatment.  相似文献

Eleven columns were set up under various groundwater geochemistry conditions to investigate the competitive effect of trichloroethylene (TCE) on hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] removal by zero-valent iron (Fe0). They were found to be electron competitors in the redox reactions. In the presence of TCE, the Cr(VI) removal capacities of Fe0 were decreased by about 40% when compared with their respective Cr(VI) removal capacities with identical groundwater geochemistry but without TCE. The specific reaction rate constant (kSA) of TCE was decreased by about 50% when Cr(VI) was singly applied. The kSA of TCE was further decreased by 75% in the presence of both Cr(VI) and carbonate. However, there was no apparent effect on the kSA of TCE when Cr(VI), hardness and carbonate were all present. It revealed that TCE was a stronger electron competitor of Cr(VI) and the degradation of TCE became more favorable when both hardness and carbonate were present. This suggests that the passivated precipitates formed on the Fe0 surface in the presence of both hardness and carbonate may significantly affect the Cr(VI) removal by Fe0 but has insignificant effect on the TCE removal.  相似文献

Nanocrystalline (Y0.7Gd0.3)2O3 powder, synthetised via polymer complex solution method, was compacted into 25 pellets applying high pressures (173-867 MPa) for 30 s that were subsequently sintered at different temperatures (800-1400 °C) for 18 h. The morphology and optical characteristics of the starting powder and prepared ceramic samples were monitored and discussed in order to identify the changes induced with the variations of initial compacting pressure, which influence is often neglected, and with sintering temperature. The grain size tends to decrease significantly with increasing pressure, even when elevated temperatures are used for annealing, while low compacting pressure resulted in grain coarsening and, in some cases, even in anomalous morphology of ceramic samples. Luminescence emission in ceramic samples decays faster than in nanopowders, that is in complete agreement with the grain formation and gradual transformation to the bulk material. Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters and branching ratios were calculated taking into account the difference in effective refractive index for nanopowder and ceramic samples.  相似文献
