We derive analytic expressions for the polarization characteristics of light emerging from a magneto-optical medium possessing arbitrary contributions from linear and circular birefringence as well as magnetic circular dichroism. The medium is placed inside a static magnetic field. The rotation of the plane of polarization and the ellipticity of the resultant light exhibit interesting characteristics that can be a useful guide in the design and analysis of new photonic devices. Furthermore, the Jones matrices are derived in all cases, including for elliptical dichroism, indicating the role of hyperbolic trigonometric functions in modeling the effects of dichroism. Finally, implications for experimental detection of the polarization state and the limits on the performance of optical isolators are discussed.  相似文献

The effect of K substitution for Na on the phase, microstructure and microwave dielectric properties of the Na1?x K x Ca4Nb5O17 (x = 0–1) composition series was investigated. The compositions with x = 0, 0.5 and 1 formed single-phase Na1?x K x Ca4Nb5O17 ceramics within the detection limit of the in-house XRD facility when sintered at 1,200–1,300 °C. At x = 0.25 and 0.75, the major Na1?x K x Ca4Nb5O17 phase formed but along with a secondary CaNb2O6 phase. Relative permittivity (ε r ) and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (τf) increased from 45 to 51 and ?120 to +473 ppm/ °C respectively while the quality factor (Q × f o ) decreased from 13,838 to 2,374 GHz with an increase in x from 0 to 1. Optimum microwave dielectric properties (i.e. ε r  = 47, Q × f o  = 5,047 GHz and τf = ? 23 ppm/ °C) were achieved for the x = 0.5 (i.e. Na0.5K0.5Ca4Nb5O17) composition. Further investigations are required to improve the density and hence microwave dielectric properties of Na1?x K x Ca4Nb5O17 ceramics.  相似文献

Myocardial perfusion SPECT using the prone position improves inferior wall counts and decreases motion problems as compared with the usual supine position. Nonetheless, it is not suitable for women. In addition, it is associated with artifactual anteroseptal defects and hot spots. METHODS: The right lateral (RL) position was evaluated instead of the prone position in 72 patients (26 women). RL imaging was performed immediately after the supine imaging during a routine 2-day 99mTc-sestamibi exercise protocol. The SPECT images were scored semiquantitatively by three physicians. Moreover, regional myocardial counts, as well as extent and severity of defects, were assessed by quantitative polar map analysis. RESULTS: All patients tolerated the RL position well and there was no significant patient movement in either position. Higher inferior myocardial counts per pixel were observed in the RL than in supine images. Inferior wall defects (especially mild ones) were more common in the supine than the RL images, whereas defects in other regions were not different. Quantitative analysis confirmed these findings. Analysis of 34 patients with recent coronary arteriography revealed an overall coronary artery disease (CAD) supine- and RL-imaging specificity of 50% and 75%, respectively, and the sensitivities of both were 93%. Right CAD sensitivity, specificity and normalcy rates for the supine position were 100%, 44% and 55%, whereas those of the RL position were 94%, 75% and 90%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The RL position improves CAD diagnostic accuracy, particularly right CAD, without significant artifacts in other myocardial regions. Unlike the prone position, the RL position is well tolerated by both women and men.  相似文献

The enzymes cyclooxygenase-1 and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-1 and COX-2) catalyze the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandin (PG) H2, the precursor of PGs and thromboxane. These lipid mediators play important roles in inflammation and pain and in normal physiological functions. While there are abundant data indicating that the inducible isoform, COX-2, is important in inflammation and pain, the constitutively expressed isoform, COX-1, has also been suggested to play a role in inflammatory processes. To address the latter question pharmacologically, we used a highly selective COX-1 inhibitor, SC-560 (COX-1 IC50 = 0.009 microM; COX-2 IC50 = 6.3 microM). SC-560 inhibited COX-1-derived platelet thromboxane B2, gastric PGE2, and dermal PGE2 production, indicating that it was orally active, but did not inhibit COX-2-derived PGs in the lipopolysaccharide-induced rat air pouch. Therapeutic or prophylactic administration of SC-560 in the rat carrageenan footpad model did not affect acute inflammation or hyperalgesia at doses that markedly inhibited in vivo COX-1 activity. By contrast, celecoxib, a selective COX-2 inhibitor, was anti-inflammatory and analgesic in this model. Paradoxically, both SC-560 and celecoxib reduced paw PGs to equivalent levels. Increased levels of PGs were found in the cerebrospinal fluid after carrageenan injection and were markedly reduced by celecoxib, but were not affected by SC-560. These results suggest that, in addition to the role of peripherally produced PGs, there is a critical, centrally mediated neurological component to inflammatory pain that is mediated at least in part by COX-2.  相似文献

Camptothecin (CPT) is a topoisomerase I inhibitor that acts against a broad spectrum of cancers. Unfortunately clinical application of CPT is limited by insolubility, instability, and toxicity problems. To circumvent these delivery problems of CPT, we propose biocompatible, targeted sterically stabilized micelles (SSM) as nanocarriers for CPT (CPT-SSM). SSM composed of polyethylene glycol (PEGylated) phospholipids are attractive nanocarriers for CPT delivery because they are sufficiently small to extravasate through the leaky microvasculature of tumor and inflamed tissues for passive targeting. The purpose of this study was to develop a novel method of preparing CPT-SSM based on its pH dependent, reversible carboxylate-lactone conversion chemistry. CPT carboxylate was added to SSM at pH 5 that favored the formation of active but hydrophobic CPT lactone for spontaneous association with SSM. The kinetics of CPT conversion and CPT-SSM formation, and the effect of varying CPT-PEGylated phospholipid molar ratio on CPT-SSM properties and CPT solubilization were evaluated. CPT converted gradually from the carboxylate form to lactone, and CPT-SSM were formed after 12 h incubation. The mean size of CPT-SSM was approximately 14 nm. CPT solubilization (approximately 12 microg/ml) and other CPT-SSM micelle properties did not change significantly with increasing CPT to PEGylated hospholipid molar ratios using this novel method, unlike the coprecipitation/reconstitution technique previously reported. This reproducible CPT solubilization in SSM was attributed to avoidance of drug aggregate formation by this method. The advantages of our solvent pH change method to prepare CPT-SSM support further investigations of this approach to other hydrophobic drugs similar to CPT in chemistry and also CPT molecular solubilization in other nanocarriers.  相似文献

A micrototal analytical method assembling in-channel preconcentration, separation, and electrochemical detection steps has been developed for trace phenolic compounds. A micellar electrokinetic chromatography separation technique was coupled with two preconcentration steps of field-amplified sample stacking (FASS) and field-amplified sample injection (FASI). An amperometric detection method with a cellulose-dsDNA-modified, screen-printed carbon electrode was applied to detect preconcentrated and separated species at the end of the channel. The microchip was composed of three parallel channels: first, two are for the sample preconcentration using FASS and FASI methods, and the third one is for the separation and electrochemical detection. The modification of the electrode surface improved the detection performance by enhancing the signal-to-noise characteristic without surface fouling of the electrode. The method was examined for the analysis of eight phenolic compounds. Experimental parameters affecting the analytical performance of the method were assessed and optimized. The preconcentration factor was increased by about 5200-fold as compared with a simple capillary zone electrophoretic analysis using the same channel. Reproducible response was observed during multiple injections of samples with a RSD of <8.0%. The calibration plots were shown to be linear (with the correlation coefficient between 0.9913 and 0.9982) over the range of 0.4-600 nM. The sensitivity was between 0.17 +/- 0.001 and 0.48 +/- 0.006 nA/nM, with the detection limit of approximately 100 to approximately 150 pM based on S/N = 3. The applicability of the method to the direct analysis of trace phenolic compounds in water samples was successfully demonstrated.  相似文献

This research was aimed at processing of metallic fiber hybrid spun yarns consisting of polyester/stainless steel and viscose/stainless steel staple fibers to achieve better electrical conductivity. Conventional ring spinning machine and ring twister machine were used to produce the single and plied yarns respectively. The linear electrical resistance of yarns was analyzed with reference to the three levels of twist multiplier (TM) for same yarn count, three levels of yarn fineness (Ne) at the same TM level, and number of plies for the same final yarn count. These results showed that by increasing twist, the electrical conductivity of yarn was increased. However, yarn fineness was in inverse relation with the electrical conductivity of yarns. The effect of yarn plying and twisting to produce the Ne 10s yarn was also found critical in governing the electrical properties. The electrical conductivity of viscose and stainless steel hybrid yarn was found more sensitive to increase with an increase in relative humidity contrary to that of polyester and stainless steel hybrid yarns. The findings of the study are significant to produce the hybrid spun conductive yarns for their potential applications in a variety of tailor-made functional, protective and smart textiles.  相似文献
