This article includes an updated review of the classification, uses and side effects of surfactants for their application in the cosmetic, personal care and pharmaceutical industries. Based on their origin and composition, surfactants can be divided into three different categories: (i) synthetic surfactants; (ii) bio-based surfactants; and (iii) microbial biosurfactants. The first group is the most widespread and cost-effective. It is composed of surfactants, which are synthetically produced, using non-renewable sources, with a final structure that is different from the natural components of living cells. The second category comprises surfactants of intermediate biocompatibility, usually produced by chemical synthesis but integrating fats, sugars or amino acids obtained from renewable sources into their structure. Finally, the third group of surfactants, designated as microbial biosurfactants, are considered the most biocompatible and eco-friendly, as they are produced by living cells, mostly bacteria and yeasts, without the intermediation of organic synthesis. Based on the information included in this review it would be interesting for cosmetic, personal care and pharmaceutical industries to consider microbial biosurfactants as a group apart from surfactants, needing specific regulations, as they are less toxic and more biocompatible than chemical surfactants having formulations that are more biocompatible and greener.  相似文献

The local hydrophobicity of an amino acid residue in a peptide sequence can be determined by measuring the hydrophobicity index (φ0) by reversed-phase (RP) HPLC. Herein, the impact on the local hydrophobicity of the replacement of an amide by a monofluoroalkene unit in short peptides is discussed. Monofluoroalkene-containing dipeptides and tripeptides were synthesized, as well as their natural parent compounds, and the hydrophobicity indexes of these short peptides and peptidomimetics were determined. Comparison between the natural parent peptides and their alkene-containing analogues was made, and the dependence of the peptidomimetic analogues’ behaviour on the pH and the solvent was studied. It was found that the presence of a monofluoroalkene unit enhanced a peptide's hydrophobicity.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The direct and close relationship between fish consumption and blood and hair mercury (Hg) levels is well known, but the influence of fish consumption on inorganic mercury in blood (B-IHg) and in urine (U-Hg) is unclear. OBJECTIVE: Examine the relationship between fish consumption, total, inorganic and organic blood Hg levels and urinary Hg concentration. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 171 persons from 7 riparian communities on the Tapajós River (Brazilian Amazon), with no history of inorganic Hg exposure from occupation or dental amalgams. During the rising water season in 2004, participants responded to a dietary survey, based on a seven-day recall of fish and fruit consumption frequency, and socio-demographic information was recorded. Blood and urine samples were collected. Total, organic and inorganic Hg in blood as well as U-Hg were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. RESULTS: On average, participants consumed 7.4 fish meals/week and 8.8 fruits/week. Blood total Hg averaged 38.6+/-21.7 microg/L, and the average percentage of B-IHg was 13.8%. Average organic Hg (MeHg) was 33.6+/-19.4 microg/L, B-IHg was 5.0+/-2.6 microg/L, while average U-Hg was 7.5+/-6.9 microg/L, with 19.9% of participants presenting U-Hg levels above 10 microg/L. B-IHg was highly significantly related to the number of meals of carnivorous fish, but no relation was observed with non-carnivorous fish; it was negatively related to fruit consumption, increased with age, was higher among those who were born in the Tapajós region, and varied with community. U-Hg was also significantly related to carnivorous but not non-carnivorous fish consumption, showed a tendency towards a negative relation with fruit consumption, was higher among men compared to women and higher among those born in the region. U-Hg was strongly related to I-Hg, blood methyl Hg (B-MeHg) and blood total Hg (B-THg). The Odds Ratio (OR) for U-Hg above 10 microg/L for those who ate >4 carnivorous fish meals/week was 4.00 [1.83-9.20]. CONCLUSION: This study adds further evidence to a positive relation between fish consumption and IHg in both blood and urine, which may result from absorption of IHg from fish or from demethylation of MeHg. The findings support the importance of assessing IHg exposure in fish-eating communities. Further studies should examine the potential toxicity of IHg in heavy fish consumers.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: Short term associations between air pollution indicators and hospitalizations for cardiovascular diseases have been suggested by epidemiological and clinical studies. The present study aims at estimating the association between particles with diameter <10 microm (PM(10)), nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)) and ozone and hospitalizations for cardiovascular diseases in eight French cities during the 1998-2003 period. METHODS: The daily number of hospitalizations in each city was extracted from the French hospital information system (PMSI) for cardiovascular diseases, cardiac diseases, ischemic heart diseases and stroke. Excess relative risks (ERRs) of hospitalization associated with a 10 microg/m(3) increase in pollutant levels were estimated in each city by fitting a Poisson regression model, controlling for well-known confounding factors and temporal trends. City-specific results were then combined by inverse variance weighting. RESULTS: Daily number of hospitalizations for cardiovascular diseases was associated with PM(10) levels (for a 10 microg/m(3) increase, ERR=0.8%, 95% CI: [0.2, 1.5]), with NO(2) (1.1%, [0.6, 1.6]) but not with ozone (0.1% [-0.2%, 0.5%]). Associations were stronger in people aged 65 years and over, and when only hospitalizations for ischemic heart diseases were considered. No association was found between strokes and air pollution levels. DISCUSSION: Our study suggests that the ambient levels of air pollutants currently experienced in the eight French cities, which are close to European air quality guidelines, are yet linked to a short term increase of hospitalizations for cardiovascular diseases. These results are consistent with epidemiological and toxicological data on the cardiovascular effects of air pollution.  相似文献

Spectral properties of quarter-wave stacks deposited on microspheres are investigated with Mie theory. These properties are converted into colorimetric spaces to deal with visual applications. An ion-beam-sputtering process is then implemented to produce elementary stacks on the spheres, and the resulting powders are characterized.  相似文献

SYBR®Green qPCR methods for the detection of the Roundup Ready® “CP4-EPSPS”, LibertyLink® “PAT” and “BAR,” and the Bacillus thuringiensis “CryIAb” traits as present in genetically modified organisms (GMO) were developed. Their specificity, sensitivity, and PCR method efficiency were determined. All methods are specific and generate amplicons of 108, 73, 109, and 69 bp, respectively, for “CP4-EPSPS,” “CryIAb,” “PAT,” and “BAR” targets. They perform well at low target levels and can detect down to 5 copies of their respective targets extracted from a sample. The PCR efficiency of the methods ranges between 91 and 109%. Due to their trait-specific nature, these methods allow an efficient screening between the different GMO. In this way, the number of possible GMO candidates present in a sample can be reduced what results in lower global costs due to limiting of further the number of analytical identification steps. The application of these methods in CoSYPS GMO analysis is illustrated using two GEMMA proficiency test samples and a reference material from the GM rapeseed event RF3. This set of SYBR®Green qPCR trait-specific methods represents a very interesting novel set of GMO analysis methods allowing cost-effective identification of GM materials in products.  相似文献

Fibronectin (FN) assembles into fibrillar networks by cells through an integrin-dependent mechanism. We have recently shown that simple FN adsorption onto poly(ethyl acrylate) surfaces (PEA), but not control polymer (poly(methyl acrylate), PMA), also triggered FN organization into a physiological fibrillar network. FN fibrils exhibited enhanced biological activities in terms of myogenic differentiation compared to individual FN molecules. In the present study, we investigate the influence of topological cues on the material-driven FN assembly and the myogenic differentiation process. Aligned and random electrospun fibers were prepared. While FN fibrils assembled on the PEA fibers as they do on the smooth surface, the characteristic distribution of globular FN molecules observed on flat PMA transformed into non-connected FN fibrils on electrospun PMA, which significantly enhanced cell differentiation. The direct relationship between the fibrillar organization of FN at the material interface and the myogenic process was further assessed by preparing FN gradients on smooth PEA and PMA films. Isolated FN molecules observed at one edge of the substrate gradually interconnected with each other, eventually forming a fully developed network of FN fibrils on PEA. In contrast, FN adopted a globular-like conformation along the entire length of the PMA surface, and the FN gradient consisted only of increased density of adsorbed FN. Correspondingly, the percentage of differentiated cells increased monotonically along the FN gradient on PEA but not on PMA. This work demonstrates an interplay between material chemistry and topology in modulating material-driven FN fibrillogenesis and cell differentiation.  相似文献

Thermoelectric generators (TEGs) are outstanding devices for automotive waste heat recovery. Their packaging, lack of moving parts, and direct heat to electrical conversion are the main benefits. Usually, TEGs are modeled with a constant hot-source temperature. However, energy in exhaust gases is limited, thus leading to a temperature decrease as heat is recovered. Therefore thermoelectric properties change along the TEG, affecting performance. A thermoelectric generator composed of Mg2Si/Zn4Sb3 for high temperatures followed by Bi2Te3 for low temperatures has been modeled using engineering equation solver (EES) software. The model uses the finite-difference method with a strip-fins convective heat transfer coefficient. It has been validated on a commercial module with well-known properties. The thermoelectric connection and the number of thermoelements have been addressed as well as the optimum proportion of high-temperature material for a given thermoelectric heat exchanger. TEG output power has been estimated for a typical commercial vehicle at 90°C coolant temperature.  相似文献
