Soil nitrogen cycle processes in urban riparian zones   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Riparian zones have been found to function as "sinks" for nitrate (NO3-), the most common groundwater pollutant in the U. S., in many areas. The vast majority of riparian research, however, has focused on agricultural watersheds. There has been little analysis of riparian zones in urban watersheds, despite the fact that urban areas are important sources of NO3- to nitrogen (N)-sensitive coastal waters in many locations. In this study, we measured stream incision, water table depths, and pools, production (mineralization, nitrification), and consumption (denitrification) of NO3- in urban soils. Samples were taken from soil profiles (0-100 cm) of three forested urban and suburban zones and one forested reference riparian zone in the Baltimore, Maryland metropolitan area. Our objectives were to determine (1) if stream incision associated with urbanization results in lower riparian water tables, and (2) if pools, production, and consumption of NO3- vary systematically with stream incision and riparian water table levels. Two of the three urban and suburban streams were more incised and all three had lower water tables in their riparian zones than the forested reference stream. Urban and suburban riparian zones had higher NO3- pools and nitrification rates than the forested reference riparian zone, which was likely due to more aerobic soil profiles, lower levels of available soil carbon, and greater N enrichment in the urban and suburban sites. At all sites, denitrification potential decreased markedly with depth in the soil profile. Lower water tables in the urban and suburban riparian zones thus inhibit interaction of groundwater-borne NO3- with near surface soils that have the highest denitrification potential. These results suggest that urban hydrologic factors can increase the production and reduce the consumption of NO3- in riparian zones, reducing their ability to function as sinks for NO3- in the landscape.  相似文献

Purpose

First, to examine how wearing high and low modulus lenses with two different base curves affected lens fit, and the corneal tissue and bulbar conjunctival vascular tissue (bulbar redness and blood velocity). Secondly, to quantify the associations between these baseline and outcome variables and the third purpose was to correlate these variables with end of day comfort.

Methods

Thirty participants wore higher (PureVision (PV) 8.3, 8.6) and lower (Acuvue Advance (AA) 8.3, 8.7) modulus silicone hydrogel lenses for two weeks on a daily wear basis. Lens fitting characteristics were examined. Corneal epithelial thickness was measured and the cornea and conjunctiva were assessed. RBC velocity was estimated from high magnification bulbar conjunctival images. Subjective comfort/dryness was reported by participants using visual analogue scales.

Results

AA lenses were rated the most comfortable (ANOVA, p = 0.041). The least movement was while using the AA 8.3 base curve lens (Tukey p = 0.028). Steep AA and PV lenses showed significantly higher conjunctival staining at the 2 week visit (ANOVA, p = 0.029). There was a significant decrease in RBC velocity with both steeper AA lenses vs PV lenses (Tukey, p = 0.001). Comparing baseline and 2 week visits, there was a significant negative correlation for the PV 8.3 between comfort and superior bulbar staining (r = ?0.53). For both the PV 8.3 and AA 8.3 reduced RBC velocity was correlated with dryness (r = 0.61 and r = 0.91, respectively).

Conclusions

Physical differences in contact lenses affect structural and vascular functional aspects of the ocular surface and these may be associated with symptoms of dryness.  相似文献

In previous studies it has been shown that reaction of crystalline horse spleen apoferritin with hemin leads to a protoporphyrin IX-apoferritin complex [Précigoux et al. (1994) Acta Crystallogr. D50, 739-743]. We show here the following. (i) Hemin binds to two classes of sites in horse spleen apoferritin at pH 8, each with a binding stoichiometry of 0.5 hemin/subunit; protoporphyrin IX also binds to horse spleen apoferritin with an apparent binding stoichiometry of 1 molecule of protoporphyrin IX/subunit. (ii) When Fe(III)-protoporphyrin IX binds to apoferritin, there is a pH-dependent loss of the metal ion, extremely slow at alkaline pH values (half-time of weeks) and much more rapid at acidic pH values (half-time of seconds below pH 5.0); maximum rates of demetallation are found at pH 4.0, and at lower pH values they decrease. (iii) Chemical modification of 11 carboxyl groups/subunit in horse spleen apoferritin does not affect hemin binding at alkaline pH values; however, it prevents hemin demetallation at acidic pH values. (iv) Hemin that has been demetallated at acidic pH values can be remetallated by increasing the pH; the rate of remetallation is greater at more alkaline pH values. (v) When around 20 atoms of iron/molecule are incorporated into horse spleen apoferritin and protoporphyrin IX is then bound, iron can subsequently be transferred to the porphyrin at pH 8.0. A mechanism is proposed to explain demetallation of heme, involving attack on the tetrapyrrole nitrogens of the protoporphyrin IX-Fe by protons derived from protein carboxylic acid groups and subsequent complexation of the iron by the corresponding carboxylates and binding of protoporphyrin IX to a preformed pocket in the inner surface of the apoferritin protein shell. The cluster of carboxylates involved is situated at the entrance to the pocket in which the protoporphyrin IX molecule is bound and has been previously identified as the site of iron incorporation into L-chain apoferritins. This appears to be the first example of iron removal and incorporation into porphyrins under relatively mild physiological conditions.  相似文献

The current heterogeneity in networks and devices demands for a high degree of flexibility in IPTV systems for digital television. A scalable video coding scheme (in this paper we focus on H.264/AVC’s scalable video coding extension SVC) accommodates this flexibility from the coding point of view. Because the IP-based network delivery chain in IPTV systems may suffer from packet loss (having a severe impact on the visual quality) it is necessary to provide means for error concealment. In this paper we propose a novel method that performs adaptation on impaired SVC bitstreams so that the resulting adapted bitstream is compliant to the SVC specification and that the reconstruction result at the decoder is equivalent compared to the approach where the error concealment is implemented in the decoder itself. The adapted bitstreams have a significantly higher visual quality while our approach does not require any modification to existing SVC-compliant decoders. The results of several experiments show that the proposed method is extremely fast (over 900 frames/s) and that it introduces a negligible overhead in terms of bit rate (ca. 0.02%).  相似文献

We report on the successful preparation and characterization of fluorescent magnetic core∕shell Fe(3)O(4)∕ZnSe nanoparticles (NPs) with a spherical shape by organometallic synthesis. The 7 nm core∕3 nm shell NPs show good magnetic and photoluminescence (PL) responses. The observed PL emission∕excitation spectra are shifted to shorter wavelengths, compared to a reference ZnSe NP sample. A dramatic reduction of PL quantum yield is also observed. The temperature dependence of the magnetization for the core∕shell NPs shows the characteristic features of two coexisting and interacting magnetic (Fe(3)O(4)) and nonmagnetic (ZnSe) phases. Compared to a reference Fe(3)O(4) NP sample, the room-temperature Néel relaxation time in core∕shell NPs is three times longer.  相似文献

Correct identification of a peptide sequence from MS/MS data is still a challenging research problem, particularly in proteomic analyses of higher eukaryotes where protein databases are large. The scoring methods of search programs often generate cases where incorrect peptide sequences score higher than correct peptide sequences (referred to as distraction). Because smaller databases yield less distraction and better discrimination between correct and incorrect assignments, we developed a method for editing a peptide-centric database (PC-DB) to remove unlikely sequences and strategies for enabling search programs to utilize this peptide database. Rules for unlikely missed cleavage and nontryptic proteolysis products were identified by data mining 11 849 high-confidence peptide assignments. We also evaluated ion exchange chromatographic behavior as an editing criterion to generate subset databases. When used to search a well-annotated test data set of MS/MS spectra, we found no loss of critical information using PC-DBs, validating the methods for generating and searching against the databases. On the other hand, improved confidence in peptide assignments was achieved for tryptic peptides, measured by changes in DeltaCN and RSP. Decreased distraction was also achieved, consistent with the 3-9-fold decrease in database size. Data mining identified a major class of common nonspecific proteolytic products corresponding to leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) cleavages. Large improvements in identifying LAP products were achieved using the PC-DB approach when compared with conventional searches against protein databases. These results demonstrate that peptide properties can be used to reduce database size, yielding improved accuracy and information capture due to reduced distraction, but with little loss of information compared to conventional protein database searches.  相似文献

Body mass index (BMI) has been suggested to play an important role in the relationship between the APOLIPOPROTEIN (APO)E genotype and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Using data from the BODYCON cross-sectional study (n = 360 adults) we assessed the association between body composition and CVD risk markers according to APOE genotype, with examination of the role of BMI. In this study cohort, the APOE2/E3 group had lower fasting blood lipids than APOE4 carriers and APOE3/E3 group (p ≤ 0.01). After stratifying the group according to BMI, APOE4 carriers in the normal BMI subgroup had a higher lean mass compared with the APOE3/E3 group (p = 0.02) whereas in the overweight/obese subgroup, the android to gynoid percentage fat ratio was lower in APOE4 carriers than APOE3/E3 group (p = 0.04). Fasting lipid concentrations were only different between the APOE2/E3 and other genotype groups within the normal weight BMI subgroup (p ≤ 0.04). This finding was associated with a lower dietary fibre and a higher trans-fat intake compared with APOE4 carriers, and a lower carbohydrate intake relative to the APOE3/E3 group. Our results confirm previous reports that BMI modulates the effect of APOE on CVD risk markers and suggest novel interactions on body composition, with diet a potential modulator of this relationship.  相似文献
