Propulsion Method for Swimming Microrobots   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper presents a novel swimming method mediated by traveling waves in elastic tails. The propulsion method is potentially appropriate for maneuvering microrobots inside the human body. The swimming action relies on the creation of a traveling wave along a piezoelectric layered beam divided into several segments. This requires that a voltage with the same frequency, but different phases and amplitudes, be applied to each segment. The swimming pattern was analyzed theoretically by solving the coupled electric-elastic-fluidic problem, and was optimized to attain reasonable thrust. It was found that despite extreme size limitations, a tail manufactured by current microelectromechanical-devices technology, using piezoelectric material, is able to swim in water at a speed of several centimeters per second. The swimming theory was verified experimentally using an upscaled model that produced propulsion of 0.04 mN, which matches closely the theoretically predicted propulsion  相似文献

The optimised acidification power test (APT) of brewer's yeast quality includes storing the yeast slurry at 2°C under beer (AP remains constant for up to 6 days), a 15 min sample equilibration to room temperature, decantation, and washing by triple centrifugation in deionised water. The final yeast pellet keeps its AP for up to 6 h at room temperature under water and thus the APT does not need to be performed immediately after yeast collection. The correct AP value (maximum acidification produced by given yeast) is determined at 25 ± 0.1°C in a 15 mL sample containing ≥5% glucose and ≥1.5 g yeast wet weight. The cell concentration is conveniently measured as absorbance (A660). Cell flocculation and/or sedimentation that can distort APT results can be prevented by stirring the sample at ≥200 rpm. The AP of yeast of different generations used to pitch brewery fermentations in cylindroconical tanks had a very low correlation with the wort half‐attenuation time (T1/2) due to large scatter, while each yeast generation separately showed a clear T1/2‐AP relationship. The lowest AP of yeast cropped from cylindroconical tanks was displayed by the first cropped fraction. Post‐cropping cooling had no effect on AP. Variations in pitching yeast vitality and their effect on the outcome of a brewery fermentation can be masked by variations in pitching rate, wort composition, ambient conditions in the cylindroconical tanks and other factors.  相似文献

Virtual reality (VR) is considered as one of the technological megatrends of 2020s, and today, VR systems are used in various settings, digital gaming being among the most popular ones. However, there has been a dearth of understanding regarding the central factors behind VR gaming acceptance and use. The present study therefore aimed to explain the factors that drive the use and acceptance of VR games. We extended the hedonic-motivation system acceptance model with utilitarian and inconvenience factors to capture the pertinent features of VR systems more holistically. We proposed a theoretical model and analyzed it through covariance-based structural equation modeling using an online survey sample of 473 VR gamers. Our findings help explain the role of different antecedents behind VR gaming acceptance and demonstrate that VR gaming is driven more by the hedonic gaming aspects than by the utilitarian health and well-being aspects of VR games, enjoyment being the strongest driver behind VR gaming intention and immersion. Moreover, findings also suggested that use intentions and immersion levels are not significantly diminished by physical discomfort and VR sickness. The findings, which potentially extend to other VR systems as well, also pose important implications for the providers of VR games. As the main contribution, based on our empirical findings, we provide a greater theoretical understanding on VR gaming acceptance and use.

This paper reports studies of the photoelectrocatalytic and photocatalytic disinfection of E. coli suspensions by titanium dioxide in a sparged photoelectrochemical reactor.

Two types of titanium dioxide electrode have been used. ‘Thermal’ electrodes were made by oxidation of titanium metal mesh; ‘sol–gel’ electrodes were made by depositing and then heating a layer of titania gel on titanium mesh. Cyclic voltammetry was used to carry out an initial characterisation and optimisation of both electrode types. The best ‘thermal electrodes’—i.e. those with the highest photocurrents—were prepared by heating titanium mesh at 700 °C in air. For sol–gel derived electrodes, optimum performance was obtained by heating at 600 °C. These electrodes were then used, in a gas sparged reactor, to disinfect E. coli suspensions with an initial concentration of 107 colony forming units (cfu) ml−1. Films prepared by the oxidation of titanium metal were shown to be superior to sol–gel derived films. Direct experimental comparison demonstrates that the photoelectrochemical system is more efficient than photocatalytic disinfection effected by slurries of Degussa P25 titanium dioxide.

Since in practical systems the TiO2 would be exposed to a variety of species additional to those that are targeted, we also examined the effects of H2PO4 and HCO3 ions on the measured disinfection rates. Phosphate addition poisons both the electrode and particulate-slurry systems and is only partially reversible. By contrast, although bicarbonate addition affects all three systems, the effects are reversible.  相似文献

Shortly after birth, plasma glucose and fructose concentrations of the neonate decline and thus leave blood sugar below the homeostatic mode. Two trials were conducted to determine the plasma glucose and fructose kinetics in control and supplemented calves for 108 h after birth. In the short-term trial, six Holstein calves were given 40 g of either fructose, lactose, or water (control) orally at 1 and 96 h after birth. Treatments were administered with a colostrum substitute (Life Boost) at 1 h and whole milk at 96 h. Rectal temperatures and changes in plasma glucose and fructose concentrations were monitored at close intervals for 12 h after supplementation. In the long-term trial, 15 Holstein calves were given 40 g of either lactose, fructose, or water (control) at 1 h after birth and at 12-h intervals for 81 h. Plasma glucose and fructose concentrations were determined before and 4 h after each of the seven feedings. Early postpartal feeding of fructose suppressed plasma glucose (approximately 50%), with a reciprocal rise in plasma fructose. Irrespective of treatment, plasma glucose concentrations did not stabilize (approximately 100 mg/dL) until 17 to 24 h after birth. After 24 h, lactose supplements increased concentrations of plasma glucose 4 h after supplementation (169.7 +/- 8.2 mg/dL), compared with those in calves that did not receive the additional lactose. After 24 h, fructose supplements did not affect plasma glucose, but plasma fructose concentrations increased (82.6 +/- 12.4 mg/dL) 4 h after administration. The response to fructose supplements declined by 11.4 mg x dL(-1) x d(-1). Fructose was not detected in the plasma of control or lactose-treated calves after 17 h after birth. Calves that received fructose supplements had rectal temperatures 8 and 10 h after birth that were higher than those of the other calves. The mechanisms of sugar metabolism change quickly following birth. Oral sugar supplements increase the total plasma sugar concentrations of treated calves.  相似文献

A method to predict etching results by analyzing plasma emission spectra during in-situ cleaning was investigated, where the plasma emission spectra indicate the surface condition of etching reactor walls. Plasma-wall interaction was evaluated by using both principal component regression of plasma emission spectra and attenuated-total-reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. We found that differences in the amount of silicon oxide deposition on the reactor wall affected radical composition in the plasma during in-situ cleaning and consequently affected the etching results. Etching result predictions using the plasma spectra corresponded very well to the etching result measurements, which are used to improve etching stability.  相似文献

Proper storage and handling of refrigerated ready-to-eat foods can help reduce the risk of listeriosis. A national Web-based survey was conducted to measure consumer awareness and knowledge of Listeria and to estimate the prevalence of the U.S. Department of Agriculture-recommended consumer storage and handling practices for frankfurters and deli meats. The demographic characteristics of consumers who are unaware of Listeria and who do not follow the recommended storage guidelines were also assessed. In addition, predictive models were developed to determine which consumers engage in risky storage practices. Less than half of the consumers surveyed were aware of Listeria, and most of those aware were unable to identify associated food vehicles. Awareness was lower among adults 60 years of age and older, an at-risk population for listeriosis, and individuals with relatively less education and lower incomes. Most households safely stored and prepared frankfurters. Most households stored unopened packages of vacuum-packed deli meats in the refrigerator within the U.S. Department of Agriculture-recommended storage guidelines (< or =14 days); however, many stored opened packages of vacuum-packed deli meats and freshly sliced deli meats for longer than the recommended time (< or =5 days). Men, more-educated individuals, and individuals living in metropolitan areas were more likely to engage in risky storage practices. This study identified the need to develop targeted educational initiatives on listeriosis prevention.  相似文献

Novel chalcones (3-phenyl-1-phenylprop-2-en-1-ones) substituted on one end (position 3) with electron donating diphenylaminophenyl substituent and on the other end (position 1) with thiophenes with variable electronic effects (CH-1-CH-5) were prepared. The spectral properties of these molecules in solvents such as chloroform, cyclohexane, acetonitrile, methanol and incorporated into polymer matrices of polystyrene (PS), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) were compared with those of 3-[4-(N,N-dimethylamino)-phenyl]-1-phenylprop-2-en-1-one (CH-1m) and 3-[4-(N,N-dimethylamino)phenyl]-1-(4-nitrophenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (CH-2m). The longest wavelength absorption band of model chalcones CH-1m and CH-2m was in the range of 400-420 nm and did not appear to be influenced by the medium. The fluorescence increased with the addition of acetonitrile, while it was effectively quenched in methanol. The strong electron-attracting nitro group quenched the fluorescence of CH-2m in nearly all solvents. In contrast, the fluorescence became more intense when the molecule was incorporated in a polymer matrix. The longest wavelength absorption band of novel chalcones was observed in the range of 410-450 nm in all media. The fluorescence of chalcones was red-shifted to the range of 530-575 nm and was most intense in chloroform. The quantum yield of fluorecence was the highest in chloroform for the chalcone with a methyl-thiophene (0.49) and low for the chalcone with a fluorenyl-thiophene group (0.07). The fluorescence of all chalcones (CH-1-CH-5) was effectively quenched in polar acetonitrile and methanol, and was less intense relative to chloroform when incorporated into a polymer matrix and more intense relative to other solvents. The lifetime of fluorescence was in the range of 1-4 ns. The Stokes shift was in the range of 4000-5000 cm−1 in chloroform, and lower in all other media. The spectral behavior of model chalcones CH-1m and CH-2m and novel chalcones with diphenylamino substituents was similar, producing observable fluorescence in several polymer matrices. The effect of the solvent on the fluorescence is discussed in terms of negative and positive solvatokinetic effects.  相似文献
