Heavy metal removal from industrial wastewaters has been intensively studied, since it is well known that they can cause severe problems to human health and aquatic life, even at very low concentrations. In this work, it was demonstrated that electrodeposition in fluidized bed electrode (FBE) can be efficiently employed to remove metal ions from solution, avoid contamination, and recover the metal. Copper electrodeposition from diluted solutions was efficiently performed using a membraneless FBE. The average current efficiency (ACE), average energy consumption (AEC), and space–time yield (AY) was optimized taking into account the operational and process variables. It was noted that for all response variables studied, the raise of supporting electrolyte concentration (C s) contributed to improvements in the process. The operational conditions current (I) and bed expansion (E) determined the values of CE, Y, and EC under activated control, but the initial copper concentration (C 0) determined how long the electrodeposition process will work under activated or mass transfer control, thus affecting the average values of CE, Y, and EC. Considering C 0 of 500 mg L?1, copper can be optimally recovered with ACE >60 %, AY >38 kg h?1 m?3, and AEC <4.0 kWh kg?1 by applying the lowest I and the highest levels of E and C s. It was concluded that the electrochemical technology using a membraneless FBE reactor is economically competitive and be applied for the treatment of wastewaters contaminated with copper or other metals.  相似文献

The last decade has seen remarkable advances in the development of drug delivery systems as alternative to parenteral injection‐based delivery of insulin. Neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn)‐mediated transcytosis has been recently proposed as a strategy to increase the transport of drugs across the intestinal epithelium. FcRn‐targeted nanoparticles (NPs) could hijack the FcRn transcytotic pathway and cross the epithelial cell layer. In this study, a novel nanoparticulate system for insulin delivery based on porous silicon NPs is proposed. After surface conjugation with albumin and loading with insulin, the NPs are encapsulated into a pH‐responsive polymeric particle by nanoprecipitation. The developed NP formulation shows controlled size and homogeneous size distribution. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show successful encapsulation of the NPs into pH‐sensitive polymeric particles. No insulin release is detected at acidic conditions, but a controlled release profile is observed at intestinal pH. Toxicity studies show high compatibility of the NPs with intestinal cells. In vitro insulin permeation across the intestinal epithelium shows approximately fivefold increase when insulin is loaded into FcRn‐targeted NPs. Overall, these FcRn‐targeted NPs offer a toolbox in the development of targeted therapies for oral delivery of insulin.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate differences in second-, third-, and fourth-year medical students' knowledge of bloodborne pathogen exposure risks, as well as their attitudes toward, and intentions to comply with, Universal Precautions (UP). DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Surveys about students' knowledge, attitudes, and intentions to comply with UP were completed by 111 second-year (preclinical), 80 third-year, and 60 fourth-year medical students at Washington University School of Medicine in the spring of 1996. RESULTS: Preclinical students knew more than clinical students about the efficacy of hepatitis B vaccine, use of antiretroviral therapy after occupational exposure to human immunodeficiency virus, and nonvaccinated healthcare workers' risk of infection from needlestick injuries (P<.001). Students' perceived risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens and attitudes toward hepatitis B vaccine did not differ, but preclinical students agreed more strongly that they should double glove for all invasive procedures with sharps (P<.001). Clinical students agreed more strongly with reporting only high-risk needlestick injuries (P=.057) and with rationalizations against using UP (P=.008). Preclinical students more frequently reported contemplating or preparing to comply with double gloving, wearing protective eyewear, reporting all exposures, and safely disposing of sharps, whereas students with clinical experience were more likely to report compliance. Clinical students also were more likely to report having "no plans" to practice the first three of these precautions (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS: Differences in knowledge, attitudes, and intentions to comply with UP between students with and without clinical experience may have important implications for the timing and content of interventions designed to improve compliance with UP.  相似文献

In July 1996, Tennessee initiated a managed mental health and substance abuse program called TennCare Partners. This publicly funded "carve-out" experiment started chaotically and soon deteriorated into a crisis. Many patients did not receive care or lost continuity of care, and the traditional "safety net" mental health system nearly disintegrated. This qualitative case study sought to ascertain the impact of the TennCare Partners program. It points out that the program's difficulties stemmed directly from a flawed design that spread funds previously earmarked for severely mentally ill patients across the entire Medicaid population. States contemplating similar reforms should strive to protect vulnerable patients by risk-adjusting capitation payments and by focusing resources on care for severely mentally ill persons. States should also minimize program complexity and ensure the accountability of managed care networks for their patients' behavioral health care needs.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate control strategies for a scalar, one-step delay system in discrete-time, i.e., the state of the system is the input delayed by one time unit. In contrast with classical approaches, here the control action must be a memoryless function of the output of the plant, which comprises the current state corrupted by measurement noise. We adopt a first order state-space representation for the delay system, where the initial state is a Gaussian random variable. In addition, we assume that the measurement noise is drawn from a white and Gaussian process with zero mean and constant variance. Performance evaluation is carried out via a finite-time quadratic cost that combines the second moment of the control signal, and the second moment of the difference between the initial state and the state at the final time. We show that if the time-horizon is one or two then the optimal control is a linear function of the plant’s output, while for a sufficiently large horizon a control taking on only two values will outperform the optimal affine solution. This paper complements the well-known counterexample by Hans Witsenhausen, which showed that the solution to a linear, quadratic and Gaussian optimal control paradigm might be nonlinear. Witsenhausen’s counterexample considered an optimization horizon with two time-steps (two stage control). In contrast with Witsenhausen’s work, the solution to our counterexample is linear for one and two stages but it becomes nonlinear as the number of stages is increased. The fact that our paradigm leads to nonlinear solutions, in the multi-stage case, could not be predicted from prior results. In contrast to prior work, the validity of our counterexample is based on analytical proof methods. Our proof technique rests on a simple nonlinear strategy that is useful in its own right, since it outperforms any affine solution.  相似文献

In the last few decades the continuous monitoring of complex dynamic systems has become an increasingly important issue across diverse engineering areas. This paper presents a pattern recognition based system that uses visual-based efficient invariants features for continuous monitoring of induction motors. The procedures presented here are based on the image identification of the 3-D current state space patterns that allow the identification of distinct fault types and, furthermore, their corresponding severity. This automatic fault detection system deals with time-variant electric currents and is based on the identification of three-phase stator currents specified patterns. Several simulation and experimental results are also presented in order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.  相似文献

A new subspace optimization method for performing aero-structural design is introduced. The method relies on a semi-analytic adjoint approach to the sensitivity analysis that includes post-optimality sensitivity information from the structural optimization subproblem. The resulting coupled post-optimality sensitivity approach is used to guide a gradient-based optimization algorithm. The new approach simplifies the system-level problem, thereby reducing the number of calls to a potentially costly aerodynamics solver. The aero-structural optimization of an aircraft wing is performed using linear aerodynamic and structural analyses, and a performance comparison is made between the new approach and the conventional multidisciplinary feasible method. The new asymmetric suboptimization method is found to be the more efficient approach when it adequately reduces the number of system evaluations or when there is a large enough discrepancy between disciplinary solution times.  相似文献

Stem cells are present in the adult tissues of most diverse species. Bone marrow is recognized to be the most exploited site to obtain stem cells and cell progenitors. The objective of the present study was to characterize hematopoietic progenitor (HP) morphology and analyze the performance of adherent cell progenitors (ACPs) cultivated in vitro from black‐rumped agouti bone marrow (Dasyprocta prymnolopha). Bone marrow aspirates were obtained from tibia crest and used to prepare histological slides and identify cell morphology. Cells were also scattered on culture plates for later isolation, expansion, and quantification. Smears obtained from bone marrow demonstrated HPs at different stages of maturity. In culture, these cells showed fibroblastoid morphology and a strong tendency to form colonies, demonstrated by the presence of cell aggregates, cytoplasmic elongations lying side by side. An 80% cell confluence was observed at 18 days in culture and progressive reduction in the percentage of nonadherent mononuclear cells. After eight passes, a mean cell viability of 96.07% was observed, from a pool of 1.6 × 107 cells (ACP). Thirteen 25‐cm2 culture bottles were trypsinized, resuspended in freezing medium, stored in 14 criotubes at a concentration of 1 × 106 cells per milliliter, and placed in liquid nitrogen at ?196°C. Agouti bone marrow demonstrated high plasticity, moreover different HP lines, and a population of adherent cells demonstrated morphology similar to mesenchymal stem cells in culture. Microsc. Res. Inspection for corrosion of gas storage spheres at the welding seam lines must be done periodically. Until now this inspection is being done manually and has a high cost associated to it and a high risk of inspection personel injuries. The Brazilian Petroleum Company, Petrobras, is seeking cost reduction and personel safety by the use of autonomous robot technology. This paper presents the development of a robot capable of autonomously follow a welding line and transporting corrosion measurement sensors. The robot uses a pair of sensors each composed of a laser source and a video camera that allows the estimation of the center of the welding line. The mechanical robot uses four magnetic wheels to adhere to the sphere’s surface and was constructed in a way that always three wheels are in contact with the sphere’s metallic surface which guarantees enough magnetic atraction to hold the robot in the sphere’s surface all the time. Additionally, an independently actuated table for attaching the corrosion inspection sensors was included for small position corrections. Tests were conducted at the laboratory and in a real sphere showing the validity of the proposed approach and implementation.  相似文献

There are several neural network implementations using either software, hardware-based or a hardware/software co-design. This work proposes a hardware architecture to implement an artificial neural network (ANN), whose topology is the multilayer perceptron (MLP). In this paper, we explore the parallelism of neural networks and allow on-the-fly changes of the number of inputs, number of layers and number of neurons per layer of the net. This reconfigurability characteristic permits that any application of ANNs may be implemented using the proposed hardware. In order to reduce the processing time that is spent in arithmetic computation, a real number is represented using a fraction of integers. In this way, the arithmetic is limited to integer operations, performed by fast combinational circuits. A simple state machine is required to control sums and products of fractions. Sigmoid is used as the activation function in the proposed implementation. It is approximated by polynomials, whose underlying computation requires only sums and products. A theorem is introduced and proven so as to cover the arithmetic strategy of the computation of the activation function. Thus, the arithmetic circuitry used to implement the neuron weighted sum is reused for computing the sigmoid. This resource sharing decreased drastically the total area of the system. After modeling and simulation for functionality validation, the proposed architecture synthesized using reconfigurable hardware. The results are promising.  相似文献
