We examine the likelihood of delisting the Hamilton Harbour as an Area of Concern, if the nutrient loading reductions proposed by the Remedial Action Plan are actually implemented. Our analysis suggests that the chl a criterion of 10 μg L− 1 is achievable, but the water quality setting process should explicitly accommodate the natural variability by allowing for a realistic percentage of violations, e.g., exceedences of less than 10–15% of the weekly samples during the stratified period should still be considered as compliance of the system. The current epilimnetic total phosphorus criterion of 17 μg L− 1 is probably stringent and therefore a somewhat higher value (e.g., 20 μg L− 1) may provide a more realistic goal. Phosphorus dynamics in the sediment–water column interface need to be revisited, as the internal nutrient loading can conceivably be a regulatory factor of the duration of the transient phase and the recovery resilience of the Harbour. We also pinpoint two critical aspects of the system dynamics that invite further investigation and will likely determine our predictive capacity to assess compliance with the chlorophyll a criterion of 10 μg L− 1, i.e., the nutrient recycling mediated by the microbial food web and the structural shifts towards a zooplankton community dominated by large-sized and fast-growing herbivores. The latter prospect highlights the notion that the bottom-up (i.e., nutrient loading reduction) approach historically followed in the Harbour was sufficient to bring the system in its present state, but any further improvements should be viewed in the context of a combined bottom-up and top-down (i.e., alleviation of the zooplanktivorous pressure) control.  相似文献

The photocatalytic degradation of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) was investigated in the aqueous slurry of titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles irradiated with xenon lamp in a batch reactor. The reaction was found to follow a pseudo-first-order kinetics and the reaction rate increased by raising the TiO2 loading and the UV light intensity. The reaction rate constant was proportional to the square root of the UV intensity. An upper plateau level was observed for the reaction rate constant, corresponding to a steady photoproduction of hydroxyl radicals at high catalyst concentrations. The experimental data was analyzed using a modified Turchi–Ollis model to account for changes in the catalyst loading. It was found that this model predicted the observed trend in the pseudo-first-order rate constant if the reaction pathway involves the interaction between adsorbed hydroxyl radicals and solvated molecules.  相似文献

Chlamydomonas shows both positive and negative phototaxis. It has a single eyespot near its equator, and as the cell rotates during the forward motion, the light signal received by the eyespot varies. We use a simple mechanical model of Chlamydomonas that couples the flagellar beat pattern to the light intensity at the eyespot to demonstrate a mechanism for phototactic steering that is consistent with observations. The direction of phototaxis is controlled by a parameter in our model, and the steering mechanism is robust to noise. Our model shows switching between directed phototaxis when the light is on and run-and-tumble behaviour in the dark.  相似文献

The Wnt signalling pathway is a central communication cascade between cells to orchestrate polarity and fate during development and adult tissue homeostasis in various organisms. This pathway can be regulated by different signalling molecules in several steps. One of the coordinators in this pathway is Nemo-like kinase (NLK), which is an atypical proline-directed serine/threonine mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase. Very recently, NLK was established as an essential regulator in different cellular processes and abnormal NLK expression was highlighted to affect the development and progression of various diseases. In this review, we focused on the recent discoveries by using NLK-deficient mice, which show a phenotype in the development and function of organs such as the lung, heart and skeleton. Furthermore, NLK could conduct the function and differentiation of cells from the immune system, in addition to regulating neurodegenerative diseases, such as Huntington’s disease and spinocerebellar ataxias. Overall, generations of NLK-deficient mice have taught us valuable lessons about the role of this kinase in certain diseases and development.  相似文献

We address non-preemptive non-clairvoyant online scheduling of parallel jobs on a Grid. We consider a Grid scheduling model with two stages. At the first stage, jobs are allocated to a suitable Grid site, while at the second stage, local scheduling is independently applied to each site. We analyze allocation strategies depending on the type and amount of information they require. We conduct a comprehensive performance evaluation study using simulation and demonstrate that our strategies perform well with respect to several metrics that reflect both user- and system-centric goals. Unfortunately, user run time estimates and information on local schedules does not help to significantly improve the outcome of the allocation strategies. When examining the overall Grid performance based on real data, we determined that an appropriate distribution of job processor requirements over the Grid has a higher performance than an allocation of jobs based on user run time estimates and information on local schedules. In general, our experiments showed that rather simple schedulers with minimal information requirements can provide a good performance.  相似文献

One of the effective ways to reduce power consumption is using clustered voltage scaling technique. The level converter flip‐flop is needed to control static current when the block with Low Supply Voltage (VDDL) drives the block with High Supply Voltage (VDDH). One of the big challenges of design is that level converter flip‐flop has low power and high speed. In this paper, pulse triggered level converter flip‐flop and double edge pulse generator were proposed. This level converter flip‐flop used conditional data mapping technique for reducing power consumption. An explicit double edge pulse generator could be shared among several level converter flip‐flops so that power consumption would be reduced. Also, the number of stack transistor was reduced in the discharging path that causes delay decrease. The simulation results showed that the proposed flip‐flop reduced 20% of power consumption and 17% of delay in comparison with other flip‐flops at 50% data switching activity. A thorough knowledge and understanding of the principles underlying the preparation and the clinical application of hemodialysates can help us provide exemplary patient care to individuals having end-stage renal disease. It is prudent to be conversant with the following: (a) how each ingredient in a dialysate works, (b) the clinical circumstances under which the concentration of an ingredient can be altered, and (c) the special situations in which unconventional ingredients can be introduced into a dialysate. The potential to enrich dialysates with appropriate ingredients (such as iron compounds) is limited only by the boundaries of our imagination.  相似文献
