A bistatic dual-Doppler network consisting of an existing single transmitting pencil-beam weather radar and a remotely located, nontransmitting, passive bistatic receiver with a low-gain antenna was constructed and tested during 1993. High-quality dual Doppler vector winds were retrieved from this system. The windfields were compared with those collected with a traditional two-transmitter dual-Doppler system. Several interesting engineering challenges relating to frequency and timing synchronization were resolved in order to retrieve successfully Doppler velocities at a remote bistatic site. Frequency synchronization was achieved by using extremely stable local oscillators, linked by both Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) signals and transmitter sidelobe coupling. Both methods provided the necessary one part in 109 coherence necessary for calculating accurate Doppler velocities. Timing/gating synchronization with submicrosecond accuracy was achieved by using local oscillators at each site linked with GPS and sidelobe coupling. The successful testing of this system demonstrates that inexpensive and practical bistatic multiple-Doppler networks can be deployed. These systems can provide three-dimensional vector winds for a number of purposes in research, aviation, media, weather prediction, education, meteorological modeling and severe weather detection  相似文献

This paper explores the issues involved in moving from ethnographic explorations of work in context to a practical contribution to system design. It does so using the example of an interdisciplinary research project involving sociologists and computer scientists in the domain of air traffic control systems. It forms a pair with another paper (Sommerville et al., 1992) exploring these questions from the perspective of our computer science partners. We characterise ethnography as a research method, and consider the differences between undertaking it for strictly sociological or anthropological purposes by contrast with interdisciplinary and design purposes. We summarise some of our results in ethnographic explications of the work of air traffic controllers, and the sociality which it manifests. We describe the dialogues involved in rendering these observations informative for systems design, and the mutual translations implied in attempting to reconcile sociological with software engineering questions about supporting the work. We conclude by specifying some features of cooperative work which an engineering approach is in danger of overlooking; the ways, and limits, in which ethnographers can form a bridge between users and designers; and some of the conflicts of interest entrained in generating technical change.The research is funded by the UK MRC/SERC/ESRC Cognitive Science/HCI Initiative with the title Social Analysis of Control Systems for HCI Design, grant number SPG 8931598. Peanut skin, when treated with formaldehyde to polymerize tannins, is a highly efficient substrate for removal of many heavy metal ions from aqueous waste solutions. The ions Ag1+, Cd2+, Cr6+, Cu2+, Hg2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, as well as Ca2+ and Mg2+, were contacted with formaldehyde-treated peanut skin. Quantitative removal could be achieved with Ag1+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Hg2+, Pb2+, and Zn2+. Capacity of the substrate for ions was promising for Pb2+ (2.1 meq/g substrate), Cu2+ (3.0 meq/g), and Cd2+ (1.3 meq/g). Sorption from a solution containing Cd2+, Cu2+, Hg2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, on a packed column of formaldehyde-treated peanut skin indicated that Hg2+, Pb2+, and Cu2+ were rapidly and completely bound to the packing, while Cd2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+ were poorly bound until the preferred ions had been removed from solution.  相似文献

A method of preparing transmission electron microscopy (TEM) specimens of coated ceramic fibers has been developed, which produces large electron transparent areas due to the minimal preferential milling of the fiber, coating, or epoxy matrix. Multiple individual fibers or tows are impregnated with a high-temperature epoxy and contained to assure a high fiber-to-epoxy volume ratio. The samples are then sectioned and mechanically thinned either parallel or normal to the fiber axes using a wedge polisher on diamond lapping films to achieve a thickness of less than 5 μ.m. The thinned sample is then ion-milled to electron transparency in less than 30 min, giving representative specimens of the coating, fiber, and coating-fiber interface. This technique is also well suited to preparing extremely flat specimens for scanning electron microscopy analysis of thin coatings. Examples of TEM sections of coated fibers prepared using this technique are presented.  相似文献

Reduced and internally biased oxide wafer (RAINBOW) actuators are fabricated by a controlled reduction of Pb(Zr, Ti)O3-based piezoelectric material. The reduction process results in a conductive layer composed of an interconnected metallic lead phase and refractory oxides (ZrTiO4, ZrO2, La2O3, etc.). The nature of the reduction is discovered to be the result of a complex volume change leading to a nanoscale interconnected metallic structure. The distribution of phases within the cermet vary within the thickness of the wafer. Within the piezoelectric ceramic phase, the reduction process modifies the grain-boundary structure to give two distinct types of fracture: transgranular and intergranular. The complexed microstructures of the RAINBOW actuator materials are discussed in relation to their dielectric and piezoelectric properties.  相似文献

Two important problems which can affect the performance of classification models are high-dimensionality (an overabundance of independent features in the dataset) and imbalanced data (a skewed class distribution which creates at least one class with many fewer instances than other classes). To resolve these problems concurrently, we propose an iterative feature selection approach, which repeated applies data sampling (in order to address class imbalance) followed by feature selection (in order to address high-dimensionality), and finally we perform an aggregation step which combines the ranked feature lists from the separate iterations of sampling. This approach is designed to find a ranked feature list which is particularly effective on the more balanced dataset resulting from sampling while minimizing the risk of losing data through the sampling step and missing important features. To demonstrate this technique, we employ 18 different feature selection algorithms and Random Undersampling with two post-sampling class distributions. We also investigate the use of sampling and feature selection without the iterative step (e.g., using the ranked list from a single iteration, rather than combining the lists from multiple iterations), and compare these results from the version which uses iteration. Our study is carried out using three groups of datasets with different levels of class balance, all of which were collected from a real-world software system. All of our experiments use four different learners and one feature subset size. We find that our proposed iterative feature selection approach outperforms the non-iterative approach.  相似文献

The content and positional distribution of CLA in TAG fractions of lamb tissues was examined with either preformed CLA or the linoleic acid precursor of CLA in the diet as experimental treatments. The CLA content of phospholipid (PL) from these tissues was also examined. Thirteen lambs were randomized to the following dietary treatments: (i) control diet (no supplement); (ii) CLA supplementation (0.33 g d−1 for 21 d prior to weaning) to milk-replacer of pre-ruminating lambs, or (iii) feeding linoleic acid-rich oil (6% safflower oil on a dry matter basis) to weaned ruminating lambs. At slaughter, tissue samples were procured from diaphragm, rib muscle, and subcutaneous (SC) adipose tissue. Safflower oil supplementation in the diet resulted in an increase in CLA content of the TAG from diaphragm, rib muscle, and SC adipose tissue by about threefold (P<0.05) on a mol% basis. CLA was localized to the sn-1/3 positions of TAG. Animals that received pre-formed CLA, however, had increased proportions of CLA at the sn-2 position of TAG from SC adipose tissue, suggesting that there were tissue-specific dietary effects and possible age-related effects on the mode of FA incorporation into TAG. Safflower oil supplementation in the diet had no effect on the CLA content of PL from diaphragm, rib muscle, and SC adipose tissue, suggesting that CLA was preferentially incorporated into the TAG of these tissues.  相似文献

Subcellular fractions of nuclei, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, plasma membrane and cytosol were prepared from liver and hepatoma 72288CTC. Marker enzyme activities, biochemical compositions and electron microscopy were used to establish purity. Hepatoma NADH: cytochrome C reductase and 5′-nucleotidase exhibited abnormal subcellular distributions. The lipids from the subcellular fractions were examined in detail. Mitochondria and plasma membranes were characterized by elevated percentages of diphosphatidylglycrerol and sphingomyelin, respectively, in both tissues. All hepatoma subcellular fractions contained dramatically elevated levels of sphingomyelin and cholesterol, two components that form preferential strong complexes in vitro. The fatty acid composition of hepatoma sphingomyelin differed markedlg from liver and, unlike liver, did not exhibit organelle specific compositions. Some hepatoma lipid classes contained reduced percentages of palmitate while others contained higher levels. Hepatoma phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine from organelles contained lower percentages of long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids than liver. Generally, unique fatty acid profiles exhibited by individual phospholipid classes of liver subcellular fractions were absent or much reduced in the hepatoma. The ratios of oleate to vaccenate were near one for most of the phospholipid classes of most liver fractions, but all hepatoma classes, with few exceptions, contained a much higher percentage of oleate in all subcellular fractions. The hypothesis is proposed that the origin of some acyl moieties for the biosynthesis of various hepatome lipid classes differs from liver sources. The possible changes in acyl pools, sources and compartments for complex lipid biosynthesis could result in change in the quantities of molecular species that could contribute to the abnormal properties of the hepatoma membranes.  相似文献

A multiple sequence alignment algorithm is described that usesa dynamic programming-based pattern construction method to aligna set of homologous sequences based on their common patternof conserved sequence elements. This pattern-induced multi-sequencealignment (PUMA) algorithm can employ secondary-structure dependentgap penalties for use in comparative modelling of new sequenceswhen the three-dimensional structure of one or more membersof the same family is known. If the direct feed approach to vitrify the Hanford's tank waste is implemented, the low activity waste (LAW) will comprise higher concentrations of alkali/alkaline-earth sulfates than expected under the previously proposed vitrification scheme. To ensure a minimal impact of higher sulfate concentrations on the downstream operations and overall cost of vitrification, advanced glass formulations with enhanced sulfate loadings (solubility) are needed. While, the current sulfate solubility predictive models have been successful in designing LAW glasses with sulfate loadings <2 wt.%, it will be difficult for them to design glass compositions with enhanced loadings due to our limited understanding of the fundamental science governing these processes. In this pursuit, this article unearths the underlying compositional and structural drivers controlling the sulfate solubility in model LAW glasses. It has been shown that the preferentially removes non-framework cations from the modifier sites in the silicate network, thus, leading to the polymerization in the glass network via the formation of ring-structured borosilicate units. Furthermore, though the sulfate solubility slightly decreases with increasing Li+/Na+ in the glasses, the prefers to be charge compensated by Na+, as it is easier for to break Na–O bonds instead of Li–O bonds.  相似文献
