Graft copolymerization of hydrophilic monomers onto irradiated polypropylene fibers

A method of graft copolymerization of hydrophilic monomers, such as 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, and acrylamide, onto irradiated polypropylene fibers has been studied. γ ray as well as electron beam were employed for the irradiation processes. Graft-copolymerization kinetics and the properties of grafted fibers have been investigated. Moisture regain, dyes absorption, and melting point of the grafted fibers were found to increase with the increasing of the degree of grafting. Polypropylene for 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone grafted fibers showed excellent dye absorption for almost all kinds of dyes such as direct, basic, acid, reactive, disper, and naphthol dyes. However, for polypropylene acrylic acid grafted fibers, the colorfastness to washing was found to be unsatisfactory. The colorfastness to washing for polypropylene 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone grafted fibers was found to be fairly good for certain types of dyes such as vat and naphthol dyes.     

Friction factors in pulsed turbulent flow

An apparatus for investigating pulsed turbulent liquid flow in a 2 in. diameter, 80 ft. pipeline is described. The pulsation unit was powered by compressed air with a consumption of up to 2.7 std. cu.ft./min. at 35 lb/in² gauge. The pressure drop for water flowing at mean velocities of 7.66 to 12.28 ft./sec. has been measured, both for steady flow and for pulsed flow, at frequencies between 0.48 and 0.82 Hz. The experimentally measured pressure versus time curves for pulsed flow can be matched fairly closely by a solution of Euler's equation employing the friction factors measured under steady flow conditions.     

Novel fluorescent polynorbornenes with multi-functional armed structure by using highly stable block macroinitiators via a combination of living ring-opening metathesis polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization

Novel organosoluble fluorescent polynorbornenes with multi-functional armed structure were designed and prepared by using highly stable block macroinitiators via a combination of living ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). A bromo-containing functional norbornene (NBMBr) was prepared from the Diels-Alder reaction of cyclopentadiene and allyl bromide. The diblock copolymer of 5-(N-carbazolyl methyl)bicycle[2.2.1]hept-2-ene (CbzNB) and NBMBr was successfully prepared using living ROMP and used as a novel macroinitiator [poly(CbzNB-b-NBMBr)] for ATRP. Carbazoyl-containing multi-functional armed copolymer with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was prepared by using poly(CbzNB-b-NBMBr) as a macroinitiator for ATRP. Strong fluorescence emissions (370-450 nm) were observed in the low excimer-forming multi-functional armed fluorescent polynorbornenes. The fact is that low excimer-forming carbazole-containing polymeric compound would apparently be favorable in photoconductive materials. The multi-functional armed structure make this compound an attractive candidate for applications as multi-modified hole transport materials in molecular electronic devices. Multi-modification could be further considered to be carried out by using such a functional bromo group at the end of multi-arms.

Infrared reflectance and transmission spectra of semiconducting non-stoichiometric CdGe x As2

The infrared reflectance and transmission spectra of amorphous CdGe _x As₂ were investigated to study the amorphous structure with varying Ge content. The mid-infrared optical absorption edges of amorphous CdGe _x As₂ with 0<x<1.2, were observed in the range 1.6–1.7 m, indicating a structural similarity in short-range order throughout. Comparing the reflectance and transmission spectra of amorphous and devitrified crystalline phases established that the structures of amorphous CdGe _x As₂ transformed from the CdAs₂ basic structure to the chalcopyrite (CdGeAs₂) structure, as one progressed fromx=0 tox=1.2. The infrared spectra were interpreted interactively with radial distribution function, magnetic susceptibility, density measurements, and crystallization studies. The crystallization behaviour of amorphous CdGe _x As₂ that was heat treated at different temperatures was investigated using far-infrared transmission spectra.     

Positive holes in magnesium oxide. Correlation between magnetic, electric, and dielectric anomalies

Magnetic susceptibility measurements of high purity MgO single crystals (<50-wt. ppm transition metals) by means of a vibrating-sample magnetometer shows an anomaly at 800 K. At the same temperature the electric conductivity increases anomalously, the static dielectric constant epsilon increases from 9 to approximately 150, a pronounced positive surface charge appears, and Fe2+ in the MgO matrix oxidizes to Fe3+. The data are consistent with O2(2-) (peroxy) defects, representing self-trapped, spin-paired positive holes at Mg2+ vacancy sites. Diamagnetic at low temperatures, the holes start to decouple their spins > 600 K, probably forming at first V0 centers (two O- at an Mg2+ vacancy), then V- centers (single O- at an Mg2+ vacancy), and releasing mobile O- states. These O- represent itinerant charge carriers on acceptor levels near the O 2p-dominated valence band and conduct by O- /O2- valency fluctuations. The O- concentration is of the order of 8 X 10(19) cm-3.
