In the present work, results on the physico-chemical properties of the silica aerogels prepared by sol–gel process using mixtures of TMOS and MTMS as precursor are reported. The wide range of precursor mixture was studied with ratio of MTMS/TMOS in precursor mixtures as 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, and 100:0 by volume. The gels with these precursor mixtures were successfully prepared using two step acid–base catalysis for gelation. Acetic acid (0.001 M) and NH4OH (1.5 M) were used for catalysis and resulting alcogels were subsequently dried by supercritical solvent extraction method. FTIR spectroscopy revealed that the aerogels show more intense peak at 1,260 and 790 cm−1 attributed to Si–CH3 resulting in more hydrophobic nature and these results were concurrent with adsorbed water content measurements made using Karl Fischer’s titration technique. The resulted aerogels were characterized using differential thermal analysis, thermo gravimetric analysis and surface area measurements. The surface area measurements showed an interesting trend that the surface area increased from 395 to 1,037 m2/g with increase in MTMS content in the precursor mixture from 0 to 50% and then again decreased to 512 m2/g for further increase in MTMS content from 50 to 100% in the precursor mixture. It was observed from our studies that silica aerogels prepared using a starting mixture of 50% TMOS and 50% MTMS resulted in high moisture resistance (adsorbed water content of 0.721% w/w), low density of 90 kg/m3 and the highest surface area of 1,037 m2/g, which has great potential for catalysis support applications.  相似文献

A knowledge of the complete flow curve, or rheogram, of a PVC formulation depicting the variation of the melt viscosity over industrially relevant ranges of shear rate and temperature is essential in the design of polyer-processing equipment, process optimization, and troubleshooting. These data are generated on sophisticated rheometers that are beyond the financial and technical means of most PVC processors. The only flow parameter that can be readily measured on an inexpensive apparatus is the melt flow index of the resin-mix. In the present work, a method has been proposed to estimate the rheograms of a PVC formulation at temperatures relevant to its processing conditions with the use of a master curve, knowing the melt flow index and glass-transition temperature of the formulation. A master curve that coalesces rheograms of different PVC formulations at various temperatures has been generated and proposed as a tool for estimating the flow curve.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to observe the effect of nano-composite coating on steel surface for enhancing its tribological properties. In the investigation, EN31 steel surfaces were coated with nano-composite (Ni-WS2) by pulse current co-deposition process in order to improve the tribological properties of the surface. The coatings were prepared according to different parameter settings. The effect of variations on coating thickness, microstructure, surface morphology, microhardness and tribological properties was observed. The maximum coating thickness of 117?µm with 8% by weight of WS2 particle concentration could be attained with the following parameter settings: applied voltage: 5?V; pulse frequency: 20?Hz; WS2 concentration: 20?g/l; duty factor: 0.6 and bath temperature: 50°C. The average friction coefficient of the deposited surface was 0.11, which is significantly less than that of the EN31 steel surface (average coefficient of friction >?0.5).  相似文献

Integrated urban transportation models have several benefits over sequential models including consistent solutions, quicker convergence, and more realistic representation of behavior. Static models have been integrated using the concept of Supernetworks. However integrated dynamic transport models are less common. In this paper, activity location, time of participation, duration, and route choice decisions are jointly modeled in a single unified dynamic framework referred to as Activity-Travel Networks (ATNs). ATNs is a type of Supernetwork where virtual links representing activity choices are added to augment the travel network to represent additional choice dimensions. Each route in the augmented network represents a set of travel and activity arcs. Therefore, choosing a route is analogous to choosing an activity location, duration, time of participation, and travel route. A cell-based transmission model (CTM) is embedded to capture the traffic flow dynamics. The dynamic user equilibrium (DUE) behavior requires that all used routes (activity-travel sequences) provide equal and greater utility compared to unused routes. An equivalent variational inequality problem is obtained. A solution method based on route-swapping algorithm is tested on a hypothetical network under different demand levels and parameter assumptions.  相似文献

The present work intends to investigate dynamic behaviour of draft gear using finite element method. The longitudinal force that the draft gear absorbs usually leads to the failure of its components, especially, the load bearing draft pads. Dynamic behaviour of an individual draft pad and a draft gear is determined and characterized with exciting frequencies and corresponding mode shapes. The effect of compressive prestress load on the dynamic behaviour of an individual draft pad is also determined as the draft pads in assembled state are under constant axial compressive force in the draft gear. The vibration characteristics of individual draft pad are compared with draft pads that are part of draft gear. The modal analysis gives us a basis for subjecting a draft pad to higher frequency loading for determining its fatigue behaviour.

Titanium alloy fasteners are being used in space programme. These fasteners are coated with MoS2, which serves the purpose of solid lubricant. During the trial assembly of flight spin motor to the bracket mounted on subsystem, one of the two fasteners failed such that the head of the bolt had sheared off the shank. Metallographic analysis carried out on the failed fasteners revealed variations in the microstructures all along the shank axis. Microstructure consisted of equiaxed primary alpha in transformed beta matrix within lower portion of the shank, while it was elongated primary alpha with little bulging all along prior beta grain boundaries as well as acicular alpha at some other location towards the head side, features, typical of, as if worked above beta transus temperatures.This paper highlights the details of investigations carried out on the failed fasteners.  相似文献

In a multistrand,the outlet near the inlet produces short circuiting flow.This leads to the formation of dead zones inside the tundish,and consequently,the mean residence time decreases.In the present study,numerical investigation of mixing inside a delta shaped tundish with sloping boundaries was carried out by solving the Navier-Stokes equation and employing the standard turbulence model.To decrease the dead zone volume inside the tundish,the effect of closing the outlet near the inlet for a small amount of time and further opening it on the mixing behavior of the tundish was studied.The outlets near the inlet were closed for varying amount of time,and the transient analysis of fluid flow and the tracer dispersion study were carried out to find the mixing parameters of the tundish,namely,mean residence time and the ratio of mixed to dead volume of the tundish.An optimum closure time of the near outlet has been found,which yields best mixing inside the tundish.The numerical code was validated against the experimental observation by performing the tracer dispersion study inside a multistrand tundish and the reasonably good match between the experimental and numerical results in terms of residence time distribution (RTD)curves.The results obtained from the present study confirm the strong role of choosing the right time for opening and closing the outlets to get improved characteristics for the fluid flow and mixing behavior of the tundish.The educational version of computational fluid dynamics(CFD)soft ware PHOENICS was used to solve the governing equations and interpret the results in different forms.  相似文献

Symmetric shock experiments were conducted on a 10 μm grain size coarse alumina ceramic with a gas gun to identify its Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL). To understand the damage initiation and their subsequent growth mechanisms in coarse grain alumina subjected to shock impact at levels much above the HEL, additional asymmetric shock recovery experiments with the same gas gun were then deliberately conducted on the same alumina at shock pressure levels more than three times as high as the HEL and the fragments collected by a dedicated catcher system. Detailed characterization of the shock recovered alumina fragments by X-ray diffraction, nanoindentation, scanning electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were utilized to understand the nature and process of failure initiation, incubational growth, coalescence and propagation leading to fragmentation. Based on these data a new qualitative damage model was developed to explain the deformation mechanism.  相似文献
