Comparison of the potentiation of specific tumor immunity in mice by Corynebacterium parvum or BCG

Two independent studies have compared killed C. parvum (CP) vaccine with viable BCG (Pasteur) and BCG (Glaxo) vaccines, respectively, for potentiation of antitumor immunity when injected with irradiated tumor cells into B6D2F1 AND CBA-T6T6 mice. Both studies concurred that, for a given number of irradiated tumor cells, larger amounts (dry weight equivalent) of BCG than CP were required to produce similar degrees of tumor immunity. Evidence also showed that stronger and more protracted immunity was mediated by CP than by BCG.     

Ascorbic acid stimulates chloride transport in the amphibian cornea

The cornea of the toad, Bufo marinus, actively transports chloride from the endothelial to the epithelial surface. This transport process has been related to the maintenance of the normal transparency of the cornea. Ion transport, as evidenced by the short-circuit current (SCC), is markedly stimulated by physiologic concentrations of ascorbic acid. Measurement of the unidirectional fluxes of 36Cl and 22Na shows that the increase in SCC is due primarily to a stimulation of the active transport of chloride.     

Nonionic detergent degradation. i. thin-layer chromatography and foaming properties of alcohol polyethoxylates

The thin-layer Chromatographic method for determination of nonionic detergents has been used for the chemical assessment of alcohol polyethoxylates and material derived from them during degradation under simple laboratory conditions. Foaming capacity during degradation was also measured on a representative selection of the materials under test. With one exception (a material with a highly branched alkyl chain) the disappearance of all the alcohol-ethoxylates tested was rapid; a small increase in time required for complete disappearance was observed with the more highly ethoxylated materials, and with the materials which had some slight branching in the alkyl chain. Residues of the polyethylene glycol type, which were generally more persistent than the original materials, were observed to build up as the original materials disappeared, increasing ethoxylation present in the original material giving rise to increasing quantities of residues. The foaming capacity at every stage of the degradation, that is, foam formation alone or synergistic effect on foam formation because of other detergents, could be closely correlated with the results obtained by using the thin-layer Chromatographic procedure.     

Operation Research Methodologies in Industrial Engineering: A Survey

This study presents the results of a survey taken among members of the Operations Research Division of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers as to perceived utility and familiarity with twelve methodologies commonly used in Industrial Engineering practice. A modification to the method of majority rule for weighting the opinions of respondents, based upon their degree of familiarity or expertise, is also presented.     

The charismatic leader: Asset or liability?

Charismatic leaders have the ability to gain a following of persons who are willing to place personal gain secondary to the will and wishes of the leader. Such a charismatic situation has tremendous potential for good or evil. Therapy groups seem to be natural arenas for the charismatic situation. Group members often perceive their leaders as "more than" human, and this seems to serve some important function in the life of the group. The present author assesses the place of the charismatic leader, along with its assets and liabilities, in the practice of group psychotherapy. Validity of an operational management assessment program.

Examined the validity of an assessment program by reviewing the career progress of 1,086 employees in sales, service, and administrative functions after they were assessed. Although Ss participating in the program were nominated on the basis of being promotable, raters found that more than 1/4 were unqualified, and the others were widely differentiated. Ratings were used to move Ss into 1st-line management, but the relationship of ratings to 1st promotions was moderate enought to reduce fears of "crown prince" or "kiss of death" effects. Participation did not seem to demotivate these Ss. Assessment ratings substantially correlated with 2 major criteria, 2nd-level promotions and demotions from 1st-line management. Utility system effects of space plasmas

Space plasmas and their unpredictable effects are objects of intensive study by NASA, the armed services, and participants in the International Geophysical Year investigations. There seems to be a direct correlation between solar hyperactivity and geomagnetic, as well as magnetotelluric, field fluctuations. Cosmic rays increase in intensity; and radio communications suffer. Various agencies are predicting an unusual increase in solar activity by the end of this year. What, if any, will be the observable result?
