The high molecular weight (MW) polypropylene with average particle size of 60 nm was synthesized by controlled growth mechanism using Ziegler–Natta catalyst. The atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies showed that PP nanoparticles were spherical in shape. Structure and crystallinity were concomitantly studied through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction, respectively. It shows nanospherical PP particles with more crystallinity (~ 75%) compared with macrosized PP (~ 59%). In addition, differential scanning calorimetry studies revealed the finite particle size effect on Tg and the scale dependence Tg followed a first order exponential trend. As particle size goes down to nano‐ scale from macrosize, continuous elevation of Tg's were observed from ?25 to ?11°C. This phenomenon was directed to configuration entropy of single spherical nanoparticles of PP. The mechanical properties and surface roughness were also evaluated through AFM. An uncooled mid-wave infrared (MWIR) detector is developed by doping an n-type 4H-SiC with Ga using a laser doping technique. 4H-SiC is one of the polytypes of crystalline silicon carbide and a wide bandgap semiconductor. The dopant creates an energy level of 0.30 eV, which was confirmed by optical spectroscopy of the doped sample. This energy level corresponds to the MWIR wavelength of 4.21 μm. The detection mechanism is based on the photoexcitation of electrons by the photons of this wavelength absorbed in the semiconductor. This process modifies the electron density, which changes the refractive index, and, therefore, the reflectance of the semiconductor is also changed. The change in the reflectance, which is the optical response of the detector, can be measured remotely with a laser beam, such as a He-Ne laser. This capability of measuring the detector response remotely makes it a wireless detector. The variation of refractive index was calculated as a function of absorbed irradiance based on the reflectance data for the as-received and doped samples. A distinct change was observed for the refractive index of the doped sample, indicating that the detector is suitable for applications at the 4.21 μm wavelength. 相似文献

Poly(o‐toluidine) (POT) is an electroactive polymer with poor mechanical and thermal characteristics. We examined the scope for improving such properties by making blends of POT with ethylene–propylene–diene rubber (EPDM). We prepared POT–EPDM blends containing different weight fractions of POT by intimately mixing known volumes of separate solutions of the two polymers (POT in THF and EPDM in toluene). Films of EPDM and POT–EPDM blends in solution were obtained by spreading, solvent evaporation, and film casting techniques. POT, EPDM, and their blends were characterized in solution by ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy, and the respective dried samples were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetry. The polymer samples were further analyzed morphologically by scanning electron microscopy, and their tensile strengths were also evaluated. Spectroscopic and thermal studies of the blends indicated some sort of interaction between the two constituent polymers. The direct current electrical conductivity of the blends in increasing order of POT loading (12.5–100%) was in the range 9.9 × 10?5 to 11.6 × 10?2 S cm?1. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the present study, skill of an extended range forecast system has been evaluated for identifying droughts over central India 20-days in advance. Rainfall forecasts from 44 ensemble members of the forecast system developed Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune have been used to prepare probabilistic rainfall forecasts. It is seen that the uncertainties in the forecasts (in terms of ensemble spread) increases from day-5 to day 20. As the focus of the study is for drought predictions, forecasts in the bins 0-5 mm/5 day and 5-25 mm/5 day (no rain or less rain) were studied in detail. It is found that the modeling system has a tendency to over-forecast rainfall probabilities. With bias correction, the forecasts become more reliable. Various drought indices were computed using the mean of the forecast distribution up to 20-days in advance. Standardized precipitation index (SPI) computed using Gamma and Pearson type-III distributions are similar in the study region. It was found that these are in reasonable agreement with those from observations. Probabilistic forecasts of standardized precipitation index (SPI) were made and the relative operating characteristics (ROC) scores indicate that the forecasted SPI values are suitable for application. 相似文献

Zinc oxide thin films grown by sol–gel and RF sputtering methods have been characterized. The characterization techniques used involve ellipsometry, optical absorption, scanning tunneling microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The films grown by sol–gel spin method which followed zinc acetate route exhibited a smoother texture than the films, which were deposited by using zinc nitrate route. The later type of films showed a dendritic character. Nano-structured fine grains of size ranging from 20 to 60 nm were observed with zinc nitrate precursor film. Individual grains show a sharp contrast with different facets and boundaries. Crystal planes and lattice parameters calculated by electron diffraction and X-ray diffraction are quite close and in agreement with the reported values in literature. Scanning tunneling microscopy has been used for measuring the average roughness of the surface and estimating the lattice constants. The STM studies of RF sputtered films, although showing a ZnO structure, exhibited a disturbed lattice. This was presumably due to the fact that after deposition the films were not annealed. The price of computers is a key factor in explaining the growth of computer spending. However, it remains unclear whether the price elasticity of the demand for computers is constant over time. Findings on the pattern of price elasticity will have important implications in the study of information technology (IT) innovation diffusion. To test the hypothesis of dynamic price elasticity, we extend existing growth models to include a price factor with different elasticity specifications. Nested specifications of three growth models were tested using spending data from 1955 to 1984 adjusted by a quality price index for computers. The results indicate that three out of four competing models depict dynamic price elasticity over the investigated period. A similar pattern is also observed when the models are estimated using more recent data on mainframe computer spending. Our results underscore the dynamic behavior of price sensitivity in computer spending over time. They offer a new perspective to study innovation attributes and to examine their impacts empirically over time. Recent progress in wind-power generation has led to the use of grid-connected and self-excited induction generators (SEIGs). Aluminum has been the common conductor material for squirrel-cage induction machines for a long time, largely because of low cost and ease of manufacturing. Recent developments in materials engineering have brought forth copper-rotor induction machines with promising results. In these machines, skin effect as well as temperature effect on the machine equivalent-circuit parameters during operation are expected to play an important role in the evaluation of induction-machine performance. ABSTRACT Equipment availability is the most significant factor in the productivity of many mines and processing plants. Machine breakdowns are not only expensive in terms of production losses but also important in meeting production schedules. In the case of an equipment breakdown, a large portion of the downtime is spent in locating the fault. For this reason, it is felt that an automated method is needed to assist the operator in the diagnostic process. In this paper, a diagnostic procedure is developed by modelling the partially known or imprecise relations and poorly defined variables found in a diagnostic environment. A diagnostic algorithm which relates the possible causes of a failure to their respective symptoms through fuzzy logic paths is presented.
