Synthesis and characterization of core–shell SiO2@(Er3+,Yb3+):Lu2O3

We synthesized crystalline Erbium Er³⁺ and Ytterbium Yb³⁺ codoped -Lu₂O₃ nanolayers on SiO₂ microspheres using the modified Pechini method. Two different kinds of precursors, nitrates and chlorides, have been used leading to a layer-to-layer morphology and necklaces structures, respectively. In both cases, the size of nanocrystallites constituting the optical active layer is around 5 nm. We performed X-ray powder diffraction to confirm the cubic crystalline structure of the sesquioxides layer. High resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses corroborate the crystalline nature of the layer. The optical emission of Er³⁺ in the visible range has been recorded.     

Causal attribution, perceived benefits, and morbidity after a heart attack: An 8-year study.

In a sample of 287 heart attack victims who were interviewed 7 weeks and 8 years after their attack or who were known to have died during follow-up, interrelations among causal attributions for the attack, perceived benefits of the attack, survivor morbidity, and heart attack recurrence were explored. Analyses focused on early cognitive predictors of heart attack recurrence and 8-year morbidity and on the effects of surviving another heart attack on cognitive appraisals. Independently of sociodemographic characteristics and physicians' ratings of initial prognosis, patients who cited benefits from their misfortune 7 weeks after the first attack were less likely to have another attack and had lower levels of morbidity 8 years later. Attributing the initial attack to stress responses (e.g., worrying, nervousness) was also predictive of greater morbidity in 8-year survivors and blaming the initial attack on other people was predictive of reinfarctions. Men who survived a subsequent heart attack were more likely than men who did not have additional attacks to cite benefits and made more attributions 8 years after the initial attack. MMP and TIMP expression pattern in pleural effusions of different origins

The matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) are proteolytic enzymes that are essentially involved in the turnover of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Their activity is counterbalanced by specific antagonists, the tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMP). In this study, we sought to analyze the expression of MMP and TIMP isoforms in pleural effusions from 88 patients. We compared MMP and TIMP isoform expression in transudates (n = 21) and exudates (n = 67), the latter divided into exudates of paraneoplastic (n = 46) or parainfectious (n = 21) origin. Zymographic and Western blot analyses revealed constant expression of interstitial collagenase (MMP-1), gelatinase-A (MMP-2), and TIMP-1 in all 88 samples. In contrast, analyses of gelatinase-B (MMP-9) demonstrated a specific expression pattern, with high expression in exudates and lack of expression in transudates. Neutrophil collagenase (MMP-8) was detected in trace amounts, and correlated with the number of neutrophils in the effusion. Low levels of TIMP-2 were detected only in exudates and not in transudates. Quantitative analysis of the expression ratio of gelatinase-B to gelatinase-A revealed statistically significant differences between effusions of different origin. The ratio was highest in exudates of paraneoplastic origin and lowest in transudates. Our data thus suggest that interstitial collagenase, gelatinase-A, and TIMP-1 play a role in homeostasis of the pleural space in vivo as constitutively expressed proteins, whereas gelatinase-B and TIMP-2 expression are induced in specific disease states. These observations contribute to the understanding of the pathophysiology of pleural effusions, and may help to characterize and possibly distinguish effusions of different origin.     

A micro computer decision support system for the total-productivity model (TPM)

The Total Productivity Model (TPM), developed by Sumanth in 1979, has been applied to a number of situations involving manufacturing as well as service-oriented operations. The diversity of applications on the one hand, and the flexibility of usage of the microcomputers on the other hand, have helped to focus the need for a micro-computer based Decision Support System (DSS). This paper presents such a system using the Macintosh Computer. This DSS is a highly interactive, menu-driven program that can provide on-the screen capabilities of individual operational units as well as the firm that comprises of them. The system has several convenient features to assess the “PRODUCTIVITY- ORIENTED PROFITABILITY” of any type companies/organizations. The system logic and flow chart, data input and output formats, and sensitivity analysis will be shown and discussed in the paper. A balanced critique will be offered to view the system in a proper perspective with respect to structural elements of the Decision Support System.
