A mechanical separation process in a hydrocyclone is described in which disperse water droplets are separated from a continuous diesel fuel phase. This separation process is influenced by droplet-droplet interaction effects like droplet breakup and coalescence resulting in a change of droplet size distribution. A simulation model is developed coupling the numerical solution of the flow field in the hydrocyclone based on computational fluid dynamics with population balances. The droplet size distribution is discretized and each discrete droplet size fraction is assumed to be an individual phase within a multiphase-mixture model. The droplet breakup and coalescence rates are defined as mass transfer rates between the discrete phases by the aid of user-defined functions. All model equations are solved with the CFD software package FLUENT™. The investigations show the impact of the cyclone geometry on the coupled population and separation dynamics. Cyclone separators with an optimized geometry show less steep velocity gradients increasing the coalescence rates and improving the separation efficiency. The calculated droplet size distributions at the cyclone overflow and at the underflow show good accordance with experimental data. The basic modeling approach can be extended and adapted to other disperse multiphase flow systems.  相似文献

The present work investigates the formation of nanotubes by anodizing titanium at 20 V in glycerol containing either 0.175 M or 0.35 M NH4F. A photoresist-masking method of thin Ti films allows to use SEM cross-sections to directly obtain information on oxide morphology, layer thickness and metal substrate loss. Therefore not only features of the initial growth stages but also oxide expansion factors can accurately be determined. The expansion factors were found to be 2.4 for the initial formation of a barrier layer, 1.7–1.9 during pore initiation and 2.7–3.1 as the main nanotubes develop. These values (>2.6) suggest substantial contribution to steady state tube growth by a plastic oxide flow mechanism. Combined with RBS efficiency measurements the method presented here allows facile and direct investigation of the mechanism of pore/tube formation.  相似文献

The study of cerebral microvascular networks requires high-resolution images. However, to obtain statistically relevant results, a large area of the brain (several square millimeters) must be analyzed. This leads us to consider huge images, too large to be loaded and processed at once in the memory of a standard computer. To consider a large area, a compact representation of the vessels is required. The medial axis is the preferred tool for this application. To extract it, a dedicated skeletonization algorithm is proposed. Numerous approaches already exist which focus on computational efficiency. However, they all implicitly assume that the image can be completely processed in the computer memory, which is not realistic with the large images considered here. We present in this paper a skeletonization algorithm that processes data locally (in subimages) while preserving global properties (i.e., homotopy). We then show some results obtained on a mosaic of three-dimensional images acquired by confocal microscopy.  相似文献

Focused ultrasound is very well suited for inducing noninvasive local hyperthermia. Since magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be employed to obtain real-time temperature maps noninvasively the combination of these two technologies offers great advantages specifically aimed toward oncological studies. Real-time identification of the target region and accurate control of the temperature evolution during the treatment has now become possible. Thermal ablation of pathological tissue, local drug delivery using thermosensitive micro-carriers and controlled transgene expression using thermosensitive promoters have recently been demonstrated with this unique technology. Based on these experiments combined focused ultrasound and MRI thermometry holds promise for future oncological diagnostics and treatment. In this paper, we review some of the recent methodological developments as well as experimental and first clinical studies using this approach.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the role of cold condensation and fractionation on the occurrence of organochlorine contaminants (OCs) in avian marine top predators along a latitudinal gradient. We measured 24 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and six pesticide OCs in blood of great black-backed gulls (Larus marinus) from the Norwegian Coast (58 degrees N-70 degrees N) and glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreus) from Bjornoya in the Norwegian Arctic (74 degrees N). Glaucous gulls had up to 3 times higher sigmaOC concentrations compared to the great black-backed gulls, and a OC pattern dominated largely by persistent and low volatile compounds such as highly chlorinated PCBs and metabolites such as oxychlordane. This was not consistent with cold condensation and fractionation theory, but probably related to diet and elevated biomagnification. Among great black-backed gulls, however, there were indications of both cold condensation and fractionation. Higher and lower chlorinated PCBs had highest absolute concentrations in the south and in the north, respectively, except for one location at an intermediate latitude, where concentrations of most OCs exceeded all other locations. In terms of proportional contribution to sigmaOC (pattern), relatively volatile OCs such as HCB, oxychlordane and tri- to penta- PCB congeners were more important at northern latitudes, while hexa- to nona-PCBs made up a larger proportion of sigmaOC in the south. The results thus showed that differences in global distribution of compounds with different physicochemical properties could be detected in avian top predators such as large gulls, even if biomagnification and biotransformation influence both the absolute concentrations and the patterns of OCs.  相似文献

Object

Delta relaxation enhanced magnetic resonance (dreMR) is a new imaging technique based on the idea of cycling the magnetic field B 0 during an imaging sequence. The method determines the field dependency of the relaxation rate (relaxation dispersion dR 1/dB). This quantity is of particular interest in contrast agent imaging because the parameter can be used to determine contrast agent concentrations and increases the ability to localize the contrast agent.

Materials and methods

In this paper dreMR imaging was implemented on a clinical 1.5?T MR scanner combining conventional MR imaging with fast field-cycling. Two improvements to dreMR theory are presented describing the quantification of contrast agent concentrations from dreMR data and a correction for field-cycling with finite ramp times.

Results

Experiments demonstrate the use of the extended theory and show the measurement of contrast agent concentrations with the dreMR method. A second experiment performs localization of a contrast agent with a significant improvement in comparison to conventional imaging.

Conclusion

dreMR imaging has been extended by a method to quantify contrast agent concentrations and improved for field-cycling with finite ramp times. Robust localization of contrast agents using dreMR imaging has been performed in a sample where conventional imaging delivers inconclusive results.  相似文献

Current magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology allows the determination of patient-individual coronary tree structure, detection of infarctions, and assessment of myocardial perfusion. Joint inspection of these three aspects yields valuable information for therapy planning, e.g., through classification of myocardium into healthy tissue, regions showing a reversible hypoperfusion, and infarction with additional information on the corresponding supplying artery. Standard imaging protocols normally provide image data with different orientations, resolutions and coverages for each of the three aspects, which makes a direct comparison of analysis results difficult. The purpose of this work is to develop methods for the alignment and combined analysis of these images. The proposed approach is applied to 21 datasets of healthy and diseased patients from the clinical routine. The evaluation shows that, despite limitations due to typical MRI artifacts, combined inspection is feasible and can yield clinically useful information.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out in a 50‐m3 cylindrical tank to determine the influence of strong momentum on the formation of large‐scale gas‐core vortices. Gas‐core lengths were measured for varying volume flow rates and submergence depths. The critical Froude numbers were also determined and the efficiency of different vortex suppressors on the gas‐core formation was investigated. The horizontal velocity field inside the vortex core region was additionally recorded using particle image velocimetry. The experimental results were used to verify numerical simulations and compared to vortex models and correlations from literature.  相似文献

Thermotropic liquid crystalline polyesters with varied chemical structure are synthesized by melt transesterification polycondensation. They are employed as matrix for blends with lignin materials to obtain melt-spinnable precursors for carbon fibers. The lignin samples are carefully purified by fractionation, enzymatic removal of reducing sugars, and subsequent modification of the terminal OH groups. Effective melt blending is achieved with liquid-crystalline aromatic–aliphatic polyesters having melting ranges that match the softening temperature of the lignin fractions, which is necessary to prevent thermal decomposition of the lignin. Polyester/lignin blends are partially compatibilized, phase-separated materials. The polyester/lignin materials are melt-spun successfully. The fiber properties depend on the lignin purification process. X-ray scattering reveals that orientation in lignin-containing fibers is maintained. For the evaluation of mixing processes in microreactors, it is necessary to be able to investigate them in detail. For this purpose, a novel optical measuring system is presented, which allows the visualization of mixing and diffusion‐limited processes as well as concentration differences in fluid films. It consists of focusing optics with a microscope objective. In combination with a Raman spectrometer, various processes such as diffusion in the microreactor can be measured and investigated non‐invasively.  相似文献
