Reinforcing bars, popularly termed “rebars,” are used to impart tensile strength to concrete structures. Concrete has high resistance to weathering and fire and high compressive strength but almost no tensile strength, hence rebars are used to provide the latter to concrete. Property consistency along the length of rebars is an important prerequisite. When the finished product is subjected to thermomechanical treatment (TMT), proper control of rolling and water box parameters and efficient pinch rolling are needed to achieve acceptable properties. Variation of yield strength (YS) along TMT bars from the front to back end has been observed within the same heat treatment. In the presented investigation, it was observed that pinch rolling ineffectiveness is the main reason for the poor mechanical properties at the back end. The pinch roller was unable to support the back end of the TMT bars properly to maintain the speed and tension of the bars, resulting in nonuniform cooling of the back end through the water box and subsequent mechanical property failure. Due to the substandard material of the pinch roller, it was unable to hold the back end of the bar properly. Based on analysis of the roller it was concluded that it failed due to improper microstructure, resulting in inadequate hardness and toughness for the stringent operating conditions. AISI H13 is a better material to use in such high-service-temperature conditions. Moreover, proper heat treatment is needed to achieve adequate hardness and microstructure properties. After proper heat treatment of pinch rollers, their service life was increased twofold, minimizing the YS variation along the rebars.  相似文献

Abstract

Correlation properties of light scattered by a moving diffuser are determined by studying the spectral characteristics of the light that emerges from two pinholes placed after the diffuser. These properties are used to determine the correlation functions of the heights of diffuser surface and the speed of the diffuser. The phase of the light on the two pinholes after it has passed through the moving diffuser, is also determined.  相似文献

Negative‐imaginary systems are important in engineering practice as this class of systems appears quite often in practical problems, for example, lightly damped flexible structures with collocated position sensors and force actuators. In this paper, an analytical framework for robust performance of uncertain negative‐imaginary systems is proposed. The results are obtained by transforming negative‐imaginary systems into a bounded‐real framework via the positive‐real property. This paper deals with all the significant technical difficulties that appear due to the transformation and the punctured j ω‐axis frequency condition of negative‐imaginary systems. The problem is equivalently cast into a structured singular value condition that gives a quantitative performance test for this class of systems. This result also gives an analytical framework for robust stability when the perturbations are mixture of bounded‐real and negative‐imaginary uncertainties. In the present investigation, boric acid was used in the ball formation of iron ore fines to improve the compressive strength (CS) of fired pellet. Boric acid was used in combination with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and saw dust and the pellets were fired at different firing temperatures from 1000 to 1300 °C. Box–Behnken statistical design was followed for analyzing the CS at different levels of boric acid, CMC and firing temperature. Results were discussed using 2D surface plots. Response function predictions determined by the regression analysis showed coefficient of correlation (R2) for CS as 0.96. Highest CS of 450 kg/pellet was obtained with addition of 1% boric acid, 0.1% CMC and a temperature of 1300 °C within the range of parameters under investigation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Solvent–antisolvent recrystallization produced ~8 µm average size RDX particles (UF-RDX) that were subsequently subjected to mechanical methods of ultrasonication and ball-milling to find further achievable reduction in particle size. Long duration ultrasonication for 20 h and 300 rpm ball milling for 4 h of UF-RDX decreased its average particle size to ~2 µm. RDX produced by all the three processes (solvent–antisolvent recrystallization, ultrasonication and ball-milling) was similar to coarser RDX in structure and thermal decomposition behavior. However, UF-RDX produced by solvent–antisolvent recrystallization was significantly less impact sensitive than that produced by ball-milling and ultrasonication. The issues of residual solvent and the metal contamination during RDX processing were addressed by process parameter optimization. Solvent–antisolvent recrystallization and mechanical methods even when used sequentially could not bring average particle size of RDX to nano-scale.  相似文献

Natural slopes consist of non-homogeneous soil profiles with distinct characteristics from slopes made of homogeneous soil. In this study, the limit equilibrium modified pseudo-dynamic method is used to analyze the stability of two-layered c-φ soil slopes in which the failure surface is assumed to be a logarithmic spiral. The zero-stress boundary condition at the ground surface under the seismic loading condition is satisfied. New formulations derived from an analytical method are proposed for the predicting the seismic response in two-layered soil. A detailed parametric study was performed in which various parameters (seismic accelerations, damping, cohesion, and angle of internal friction) were varied. The results of the present method were compared with those in the available literature. The present analytical analysis was also verified against the finite element analysis results.  相似文献

Due to rapid construction, necessity for raw materials of concrete, especially coarse aggregate, tends to increase the danger of early exhaustion of the natural resources. An alternative source of raw materials would perhaps delay the advent of this early exhaustion. Recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) plays a great role as an alternative raw material that can replace the natural coarse aggregate (NCA) for concrete. Previous studies show that the properties of RCA concrete are inferior in quality compared to NCA concrete. This article attempts to study the improvement of properties of RCA concrete with the addition of bacteria named as Bacillus subtilis. The experimental investigation was carried out to evaluate the improvement of the compressive strength, capillary water absorption, and drying shrinkage of RCA concrete incorporating bacteria. The compressive strength of RCA concrete is found to be increased by about 20% when the cell concentration of B. subtilis is 106 cells/ml. The capillary water absorption as well as drying shrinkage of RCA are reduced when bacteria is incorporated. The improvement of RCA concrete is confirmed to be due to the calcium carbonate precipitation as observed from the microstructure studies carried out on it such as EDX, SEM, and XRD.  相似文献

A series of CdS/Nix nanocomposite photocatalysts, containing ca. 0.6–15 wt% Ni, were synthesized using a one-step hydrothermal method and characterized for their crystallographic, morphological, interfacial, and optical properties. Rietveld refinement of powder XRD data revealed the coexistence of wurtzite (hexagonal) and zinc blende (cubic) phases of CdS in ratios dependent on Ni content. Only a fraction of Ni existed as a secondary phase of NiS while the majority occupied the lattice positions of hexagonal CdS. Whereas up to 10-fold enhancement in H2 evolution compared with pure CdS was observed for samples containing ∼1.5–4.5 wt% Ni, samples with smaller or larger Ni content displayed poor activity for visible-light-induced splitting of water in presence of sulfide–sulphite ions as sacrificial electron donors. In contrary to recent findings, our study reveals that the enhanced CdS photoactivity is not a result of charge transfer between p-type NiS and n-type CdS, Ni-induced visible-region absorbance, or the coating of CdS particles by non-photoactive NiS. Instead, the preparation-dependent hexagonal/cubic CdS phase boundaries and particle morphology may play a crucial role. Additionally, certain Ni-doping-induced sub-bandgap shallow energy levels contribute to charge carrier separation.  相似文献
