Nanocomposites of biobased thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) from dimer fatty acids and halloysite nanotubes (HNT) were elaborated by different melt processing routes such as direct mixing (1 step process) and masterbatch/dilution (2 steps process), at different temperatures (150 and 180 °C). Rheological and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses indicated that the HNT distribution and dispersion were dependent on the processing conditions: the 2 steps process produced well dispersed nanocomposites and the masterbatch dilution at 180 °C improved the HNT distribution through the TPU. Consequently, a high reinforcement was achieved, with a 40% increase in the elastic modulus and 8 °C increase in the relaxation temperature related to the glass transition of the TPU soft segments. Furthermore, a percolated network was attained, even if a large extent of HNT breaking was observed during processing, suggesting that a synergistic effect between the HNT particles and the TPU's hard segments in the molten state occurred. Thus, HNT nanotubes can be seen as highly reinforcing nanofillers when good dispersion and distribution are achieved through the polymeric matrix.  相似文献

Ferroelectrics are important technological materials with wide‐ranging applications in electronics, communication, health, and energy. While lead‐based ferroelectrics have remained the predominant mainstay of industry for decades, environmentally friendly lead‐free alternatives are limited due to relatively low Curie temperatures (T C) and/or high cost in many cases. Efforts have been made to enhance T C through strain engineering, often involving energy‐intensive and expensive fabrication of thin epitaxial films on lattice‐mismatched substrates. Here, a relatively simple and scalable sol–gel synthesis route to fabricate polycrystalline (Ba0.85Ca0.15)(Zr0.1Ti0.9)O3 nanowires within porous templates is presented, with an observed enhancement of T C up to ≈300 °C as compared to ≈90 °C in the bulk. By combining experiments and theoretical calculations, this effect is attributed to the volume reduction in the template‐grown nanowires that modifies the balance between different structural instabilities. The results offer a cost‐effective solution‐based approach for strain‐tuning in a promising lead‐free ferroelectric system, thus widening their current applicability.  相似文献

We consider two treatment comparison in a clinical trial setup where the responses from one treatment are a priori known for a fixed number of individuals and patients are allocated in a groupsequential way for the other treatment using inverse sampling. We consider the odds ratio as the measure of treatment difference at the end of each group, where for the calculation of odds ratios we consider the full data on one treatment, which are a priori known, and the available data on the other treatment up to that point of time. We have calculated the optimal number of index subjects for inverse sampling and examine the effects of different type I and type II error spending functions on group sequential testing in this context. Adsorption has been found to be significant in ultrafiltration by mixed matrix membrane. Removal of very low molecular weight solutes compared to the molecular weight cut off of the membrane is facilitated by adsorption. The modeling of the adsorption coupled with concentration polarization is presented based on the mathematical approach developed by Gekas et al. (Gekas et al. Chem Eng Sci. 1993;48:2753–2765), from the first principles. However, extensive modifications were included in theoretical development including those suggested by Ruiz‐Bevia et al. (Ruiz‐Bevia et al. Chem Eng Sci. 1997;52:2343–2352). The developed model captured the rejection dynamics with the help of retention factor. The model equations were solved under the framework of boundary layer analysis, using the integral approach. Effects of the adsorption isotherm and the different parameters affecting the system performance were also investigated. Thermal frontal polymerization was carried out with trimethylol propane triglycidyl ether using two different BF3‐amine complexes, B‐950 and B‐110 from Leepoxy, as initiators for cationic polymerization. The amounts of filler (kaolin or fumed silica), defoaming, or expansion agents were varied to study how the compositions affected the front velocity, expansion, and flexural modulus of the resulting epoxy resins. The polymer produced with B‐950 initiator showed higher modulus than the polymers produced with B‐110. Moreover, fumed silica created stronger materials than kaolin. The presence of BYK as a defoamer or an expansion agent such as the Expancel #80 was also able to affect significantly the mechanical properties. differential scanning calorimetry studies indicated that the conversion was complete and that kaolin and silica increased the rate of reaction. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) bind to the calf thymus DNA (ct‐DNA) like anionic biopolymers electrostatically, and establish equilibrium in aqueous medium at pH 7. At low concentration, ct‐DNA does not interact with anionic surfactants, sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecylbenzylsulfonate (SDBS). However, in the ground state, anionic surfactant is found to clearly establish equilibrium with ct‐DNA‐bound cationic surfactant whereby the same surfactant–DNA isosbestic point reappears. We herein report a detail ratiometric binding of CPB with ct‐DNA, and interaction of anionic SDBS with DNA‐bound CPB in comparison with the combined ct‐DNA–CTAB–SDS system. Compaction of ct‐DNA in presence of CPB and its decompaction using anionic SDBS is also studied in comparison with CTAB–SDS combination. The techniques used are tensiometry, spectrophotometry, viscometry, cyclic voltammetry, circular dichroism, isothermal titration calorimetry, and density functional theory (DFT)‐based computational calculations. The size and surface charge density of the surfactant headgroups and the phosphate group in DNA have a contributing role in the DNA compaction–decompaction phenomenon.  相似文献

In vitro probiotic attributes of Pediococcus acidilactici, viz. tolerance to acidity and bile salt, phenol resistance, lactic acid production, antioxidant activity, cell surface hydrophobicity, lysozyme resistance and the presence of β‐galactosidase, proteolytic, lipase and peptidoglycan hydrolase activities, were studied. The strain was found to be rich in different proteolytic activities, β‐galactosidase and antioxidant activities, and produced lactic acid. The studies conducted support that P. acidilactici national collection of dairy cultures (NCDC) 252 is a potential probiotic for humans with all the essential basic probiotic properties. This testing is useful to gain insight into this strain and its mechanism of action. All these attributes add to its therapeutic importance and industrial significance.  相似文献

Sugarcane juice is a very popular drink in India and other Asian countries, where sugarcane is an important crop. Since sugarcane juice spoils very quickly and there is a lack of research in this area, no commercialized sugarcane juices are available in India. Here, stabilized sugarcane juice was developed using response surface methodology. Total soluble solids, reducing sugar, total sugar, polyphenol oxidase activity, ascorbic acid, pH, optical density, transmittance, titrable acidity, microbiological properties, and sensory scores of the stabilized juice were evaluated using a Box–Behnken design. The composition was optimized and the sugarcane drink was further processed using blending and hot filling techniques. The processed juice was hot-filled into glass bottles under aseptic conditions. The predicted shelf life of the processed sugarcane juice was 3 months at 18 °C and 6 months at 10 °C.  相似文献

We here investigate drawing of multi-layered Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid fibers, drawn under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. We first develop one-dimensional equations governing mass, momentum, and energy balances and solve them numerically to obtain steady state draw root shape, velocity, and temperature profiles. These solutions are then used to perform linear stability analysis. For the case of isothermal draw, the system displays an oscillatory instability when the draw ratio (ratio of cross-sectional areas of fiber at the entrance and exit of the drawing) is higher than a critical draw ratio (highest stable draw ratio) of about 20.21. Investigation of stability behavior under non-isothermal draw conditions is performed by considering radiative heating and convective cooling. Employing only radiative heating enhances the critical draw ratio, and simultaneous heating and convective cooling increase the critical draw ratio even further. For the case of simultaneous heating and cooling, with increasing convective cooling strength, the critical draw ratio first increases, reaches a maximum, and then gradually decreases. However, with only convective cooling, the critical draw ratio decreases with an increase in convective cooling strength. We also find that the stabilizing effect of a non-isothermal operation can be enhanced by considering fluids with higher viscosity sensitivity to temperature, increasing the maximum temperature, and for sharper attenuation of the fiber cross-sectional area with length. For the case of isothermal drawing of non-Newtonian fluid fibers, the system has a higher critical draw ratio for shear thickening fluids (power-law exponent, n>1). In contrast, the use of a shear thinning fluid (n<1) reduces the critical draw ratio. Consideration of a non-isothermal operation of non-Newtonian fluid fibers reveals that the critical draw ratio is primarily determined by the non-Newtonian behavior rather than the non-isothermal drawing.  相似文献
