In recent years, neural networks have been used as a tool for modeling an industrial process. An improvement in their performance may be expected either by divining more efficient training algorithms or by intelligently manipulating the data set. The second method is examined. The problem chosen is one of predicting the properties of cotton yarn from the fiber properties. When the input data are known to correlate with each other, principal component analysis can be used to improve the performance of neural networks. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. During the last decade, worldwide attention of researchers has focused on nano-ceramic composites with superior mechanical behavior and improved reliability for structural applications. Here we report the development of a multi-layer composite (MLC) of tape cast nano zirconia with high failure energy. The MLC samples were fabricated by thermocompression of green tapes prepared from 3 mole % yttria stabilized zirconia (3-YSZ) powder with a primary crystallite size of 27 nm. Depending on the number of layers, the MLC samples exhibited failure energy (238.97 KJm-3) more than two times higher than that of the single tape (≈107 KJm-3) with a reasonably high bi-axial flexural strength (≈630 MPa), high hardness (≈ 13 GPa at 49 N), and indentation fracture toughness nearly four times as high as that of the single tape. In addition, these MLC materials showed the presence of a R-curve behavior.  相似文献

Oncogenic mutations resulting in activated Ras Guanosine Triphosphate (GTP) are prevalent in 30% of all human cancers, but not primary nervous system tumors. Several growth factors/receptors are implicated in the pathogenesis of malignant astrocytomas including epidermal growth factor (EGFR) and platelet derived growth factor (PDGF-R) receptors, plus the highly potent and specific angiogenic vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). A significant proportion of these tumors also express a truncated EGFR, which is constitutively activated. Our work demonstrates that the mitogenic signals from both the normal PDGF-R and EGFR and the truncated EGFR activate Ras. Inhibition of Ras by genetic or pharmacological strategies leads to decreased astrocytoma tumorgenic growth in vitro and decreased expression of VEGF. This suggests that these agents may be potentially important as novel anti-proliferative and anti-angiogenic therapies for human malignant astrocytomas. In contrast to astrocytomas, where increased levels of activated Ras GTP results from transmitted signals from activated growth factor receptors, the loss of neurofibromin is postulated to lead to functional up-regulation of the Ras pathway in neurofibromatosis-1(NF-1). We have demonstrated that NF-1 neurofibromas and neurogenic sarcomas, compared to non-NF-1 Schwannomas, have markedly elevated levels of activated Ras GTP. Increased Ras GTP was associated with increased tumor vascularity in the NF-1 neurogenic sarcomas, perhaps related to increased VEGF secretion. The role of Ras inhibitors as potential therapy in this tumor is also under study.  相似文献

Alkaline phosphatase, which is present in curds made from raw milk as well as from boiled milk, does not serve to differentiate them. It was found that incubation time or acidity (lactic acid equivalent of curd acidity incubated aseptically with heated milk) does not revive heat-denatured phosphatase. The reappearance was found to be due to phosphatase of microbial origin; it was not a case of reactivation of the denatured enzyme. Low intensity, but increasing slowly, of the activity of regenerated phosphatase in curd (permeability of the microbial cells to the testing reagents is probably limiting in the rate of reaction), presence of the enzyme in the sonicated cells of curd-forming microflora and absence of activity in the supernatant of the growth medium suggest that the formed enzyme is an intracellular one.  相似文献

Phase equilibria in the binary system Bi2O3-ZnO were studied by quenching technique. Heat-treated compositions were subjected to X-ray diffraction for phase identification, and differential thermal analysis, optical and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the solid-liquid equilibria occurring in this system. The data thus obtained revealed that incorporation of a small amount of ZnO to the high-temperature face-centered cubic lattice of Bi2O3 leads to the formation of a body-centered cubic solid solution (-Bi2O3), which extends up to a composition of 2.2 mol% ZnO at a temperature near 750°C. On cooling, the -Bi2O3 solid solution undergoes a eutectoid transformation at a temperature of 710°C to yield the low-temperature monoclinic polymorph of Bi2O3 (-Bi2O3) and Bi38ZnO58. The eutectoid occurs at a composition of 1.8 mol% ZnO. The compound Bi38ZnO58 has a crystal structure analogous to the body-centered cubic -Bi2O3 solid solution and melts incongruently at a temperature near 753 ± 2°C to yield -Bi2O3 and liquid. A binary eutectic occurs between Bi38ZnO58 and ZnO at a composition near 25 ± 1.0 mol% ZnO with a melting temperature of 738 ±2°C. Based on the data obtained in this study, a revised phase diagram of the binary system Bi2O3-ZnO is proposed.  相似文献

The reaction chemistry involved in the synthesis of perovskite Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 [Pb3MgNb2O9] was studied by the solid state reaction technique using precursor oxides as reactants. At the initial stage of the reaction process, a large fraction of PbO present in the mixtures combined with Nb2O5 and a small amount of MgO to form an oxygen-deficient pyrochlore phase with a composition Pb1.714(Mg0.286Nb1.714)O6.286 [Pb6MgNb6O22]. The pyrochlore phase thus formed further reacted with the remaining PbO and MgO to yield the perovskite Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3. The pyrochlore Pb1.714(Mg0.286Nb1.714)O6.286 accomodates a small amount of PbO into its lattice and forms a narrow homogeneity range which extends from the composition Pb1.714(Mg0.286Nb1.714)O6.286 [Pb6MgNb6O22] to a composition Pb2(Mg0.286Nb1.714)O6.571 [Pb7MgNb6O23] with a corresponding increase in the lattice constant value from a = 10.586 to 10.601 Å. The pyrochlore phase melts incongruently at a temperature near 1230°C to yield Mg4Nb2O9 and a liquid. Below this temperature, the perovskite Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 coexists with the pyrochlore solid solutions. However, the compound Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 is not compatible with Nb2O5 and these two phases react with one another to form the pyrochlore Pb1.714(Mg0.286Nb1.714)O6.286 and MgO.  相似文献

The mechanism of sintering in chromium(III) oxide in the presence of varying amounts of lanthanum oxide under firing conditions which simulate a controlled reducing atmosphere, has been investigated. The investigation is based on isothermal shrinkage measurements at different temperatures. The data suggest that the vapour-phase transport mechanism becomes predominant with evidence of a grain-boundary diffusion process.  相似文献
