Seismic retrofit implementation has been a major challenge in many earthquake-prone cities. This paper examines why building owners are reluctant to adopt measures to reduce earthquake losses despite advancement in seismic design methods and the enactment of intervening legislative frameworks. A case study approach revealed the socio-behavioural barriers affecting seismic retrofit implementation. Significant barriers identified included the perception of earthquake risks, a lack of trust in seismic strengthening techniques and a lack of support for pro-social mitigation behaviours from public authorities. The findings suggest that a reappraisal of the policy implementation approach used by government agencies is required, and that greater attention should be given to seismic designs recommended by professionals and approved by regulatory authorities in order to earn building owners' trust regarding the efficacy of earthquake risk-reduction measures.

La mise aux normes parasismiques des constructions existantes est un défi majeur dans de nombreuses villes sujettes aux tremblements de terre. Le présent article examine pourquoi les propriétaires d'immeubles sont peu disposés à adopter des mesures permettant de réduire les sinistres dus aux tremblements de terre en dépit des progrès réalisés dans les méthodes de conception parasismique et malgré la promulgation de cadres législatifs d'intervention. Une approche par étude de cas a mis en évidence les barrières sociocomportementales affectant la mise en ?uvre des normes parasismiques dans les immeubles existants. Ont été identifiés parmi ces obstacles importants la perception des risques de tremblements de terre, un manque de confiance dans les techniques de renforcement parasismique et un manque de soutien de la part des autorités publiques en faveur de comportements pro-sociaux permettant d'adoucir ces politiques. Les résultats obtenus suggèrent qu'il est nécessaire d'opérer une réévaluation de l'approche utilisée par les organismes publics pour mettre en ?uvre ces politiques, et qu'il devrait être porté une plus grande attention aux conceptions parasismiques recommandées par les professionnels et homologuées par les organismes de réglementation de façon à gagner la confiance des propriétaires d'immeubles, s'agissant de l'efficacité des mesures de réduction des risques liés aux tremblements de terre.

Memory, suggestibility, stress arousal, and trauma-related psychopathology were examined in 328 3- to 16-year-olds involved in forensic investigations of abuse and neglect. Children's memory and suggestibility were assessed for a medical examination and venipuncture. Being older and scoring higher in cognitive functioning were related to fewer inaccuracies. In addition, cortisol level and trauma symptoms in children who reported more dissociative tendencies were associated with increased memory error, whereas cortisol level and trauma symptoms were not associated with increased error for children who reported fewer dissociative tendencies. Sexual and/or physical abuse predicted greater accuracy. The study contributes important new information to scientific understanding of maltreatment, psychopathology, and eyewitness memory in children. Document understanding, the interpretation of a document from its image form, is a technology area which benefits greatly from the integration of natural language processing with image processing. We have developed a prototype of an Intelligent Document Understanding System (IDUS) which employs several technologies: image processing, optical character recognition, document structure analysis and text understanding in a cooperative fashion. This paper discusses those areas of research during development of IDUS where we have found the most benefit from the integration of natural language processing and image processing: document structure analysis, optical character recognition (OCR) correction, and text analysis. A polar nephelometer that measures the light scattered into a two dimensional plane by a stream of aerosols that intersect a 350 milliwatt diode laser beam with a wavelength of 670 nm is described. A half wave plate is used to orient the laser light both parallel and perpendicular to the measurement plane. This scattering information combined with simultaneously measured size distribution information is used to determine the real (mr) refractive index of the aerosols using a Genetic Algorithm search method. Errors in the retrieved mr based on noise in the scattering measurement as well as uncertainties in the size distribution measurement are examined. The mr of polystyrene latex spheres and ammonium sulfate droplets are determined and match expectations within experimental uncertainties using Mie-Lorenz theory. The angular scattering properties of spherical secondary organic aerosols generated by oxidizing α -pinene do not follow this theory and calls into question the inferred mr.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Microalgae, with both high biomass productivity and oil content, are regarded as attractive candidates for the production of alternative biodiesel as well as for CO2 biofixation. In the present study, four microalgal strains native to southeastern Louisiana's waters were isolated and identified to evaluate their potential for the production of biodiesel. Selected strains were identified through genomic DNA in sequencing of either 16S rRNA or 18S rRNA genes followed by lipid and fatty acid content characterization and quantification. RESULTS: High correlation was found with known nucleotide sequence identities at 98% with Sellaphora pupula, and 99% with Synechococcus sp., Chlorella sorokiniana, Scenedesmus abundans, and Chlorella vulgaris (control). The fatty acid profiles of these organisms changed when using 5% CO2 aeration. Total fatty acids (TFA) decreased from 20.63 to 17.62, 54.83 to 24.4, and 29.82 to 23.99 g kg?1 in Synechococcus sp., Sellaphora pupula and Chlorella sorokiniana, respectively. TFA increased from 14.14 to 31.49 and 15.14 to 47.52 g kg?1 dry biomass in Scenedesmus abundans and Chlorella vulgaris (control), respectively. CONCLUSION: Chlorella sorokiniana, with a lower C18:3 and the highest biomass yield at 5% CO2 aeration, was found to be the best candidate for biodiesel production. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Detection of doping agents in urine frequently requires extensive separation prior to chemical analyses. Gas or liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry has produced accurate and sensitive assays, but chromatographic separations require time and, sometimes, chemical derivatization. To avoid such tedious and lengthy procedures, vacuum matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (vMALDI) coupled with the linear ion trap mass spectrometry (LIT/MS) technique is tested for its applicability as a rapid screening technique. Commonly used doping agents like nandrolone, boldenone, trenbolone, testosterone, and betamethasone were chosen as study compounds. Different MALDI matrixes like alpha-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid (CHCA), dihyroxy benzoic acid (DHB) with and without cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), a surfactant, and meso-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl) porphyrin (F20TPP) were tested. Among them, F20TPP (MW 974.57 Da) was selected as the preferred matrix owing to the lack of interfering matrix peaks at the lower mass range (m/z 100-700). Urine samples spiked with study compounds were processed by solid-phase extraction (SPE) and consistently detected through a linear range of 0.1-100 ng/mL. The limit of detection and lower limit of quantification for all five analytes have been determined to be 0.03 and 0.1 ng/mL, respectively, in urine samples. Testosterone-d3 was used as an internal standard, and the quantitative measurements were achieved by the selective reaction monitoring (SRM) mode. The method was validated and showed consistency in the results. Hence, vMALDI-LIT/MS can be used as a rapid screening method to complement the traditional GC/MS and LC/MS techniques for simultaneous identification, confirmation, and quantification of doping agents in urine.  相似文献

This work identifies a link between on-line statistical process control (SPC) and the learning effect for the process standard deviation (PSD) caused by the quality improvement (QI) program. The learning curve (LC) is used to describe and forecast, and the exponentially weighted root mean square control chart is used to monitor the progress in reducing PSD. A modification of the quality control chart (QCC) that considers LC of PSD is proposed. The reduction rate of PSD may be large during the initial stage of the QI program, and influences QCC construction. Simulation is used to compare the shift-detecting ability of the Shewhart- control chart and EWMA- control chart, without- and with- consideration of LC. The EWMA- chart with consideration of LC performs best. In comparison, the Shewhart- chart without LC consideration has almost no shift-detecting ability when the shift magnitude of the process mean is small, leading to rendering quality control ineffective.  相似文献

Incubation of bovine muscle at 37°C promoted a more drastic proteolytic change in myofibrillar proteins, as determined from sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gels of isolated myofibrils, than incubation at 4°C. Degradation of myosin and troponin-T were the most noticeable changes at 37°C. Loss of α-actinin was observed in the 4°C incubated muscle. Ground bovine muscle incubated at pH 5·4 and 7 revealed that alterations in myosin and troponin-T were the most noticeable changes at ph 5·4 while troponin-T and α-actinin were altered at pH7. More troponin-T degradation occurred at pH 5·4 and 37°C than at pH7 and 4°C (similar to the degradation of myosin), indicating that troponin-T degradation in post-mortem muscle may be an indicator of overall myofibrillar proteolysis and not responsible for post-mortem tenderisation per se. Myosin degradation in the ground samples incubated at pH 5·4 and in whole samples incubated at 37°C was compared with the digestion of myofibrillar myosin by papain. Both pyrophosphate and Guba-Straub extracts of the 37°C and pH 5·4 treated samples confirmed that myosin degradation did occur to a much greater extent at this temperature and pH than at 4°C and pH7, and, in addition, at pH 5·4 frequent cleavage occurred near the papain sensitive site of myosin.  相似文献
