An FM-CW radar system was applied to detect a human body buried in a very wet snowpack. This radar uses the L -band microwave frequency with a maximum output power of 100 mW, and utilizes digital signal processing techniques. Field experiments were carried out to detect and map a human body embedded at a depth of 125 cm in a natural snowpack. We have demonstrated and evaluated a grating array outcoupler fabricated by photoelectrochemical (PEC) etching, a manufacturable and practical approach for fabrication of grating-based III-V semiconductor waveguide devices. An array of submicron period gratings was etched into photolithographically delineated areas in a single PEC step. The fabricated devices are: 10-μm wide rib waveguides with 0.35-μm first-order outcoupling gratings; and 10-μm wide rib waveguides with 10 μm×10 μm pixellated areas of gratings. Device characterization demonstrates the effectiveness of outcoupling grating fabrication using PEC and that the pixellated grating outcoupler is an effective and simple means of generating an optical beam array 相似文献

We present a design optimization method for systems with high-dimensional parameter spaces using inductive decision trees.
The essential idea is to map designs into a relatively low-dimensional feature space, and to derive a classifier to search
for high-performing design alternatives within this space. Unlike learning classifier systems that were pioneered by Holland
and Goldberg, classifiers defined by inductive decision trees were not originally developed for design optimization. In this
paper, we explore modifications to such classifiers to make them more effective in the optimization problem. We expand the
notions of feature space, generalize the tree construction heuristic beyond the original information-theoretic definitions,
increase the reliance on domain expertise, and facilitate the transfer of design knowledge between related systems. There
is a relatively small but rapidly growing body of work in the use of inductive trees for engineering design; the method presented

The main objective of this fundamental study was to investigate effects of processing conditions and resulting matrix morphology on interfacial bond strength of fibre reinforced thermoplastic composites. Using a hot stage microscope, single fibre pull-out samples were produced with T700S high strength carbon fibre and two semicrystalline thermoplastic matrices, polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), respectively. Processing temperatures and cooling histories were the major variables in sample preparation. The T700S fibre had no clear effect on the surrounding PPS and PET matrix morphology, as long as direct cooling at constant rates was selected. A transcrystalline phase around the fibres could be induced in the T700S/PPS system, if isothermal crystallization was carried out at 227°C. Fibre pull-out tests were conducted at room temperature and two basic failure paths were observed, i.e. debonding at the fibre-matrix interface and cohesive failure of the matrix close to the fibre surface. The results indicate that slow cooling rate and a resulting coarse spherulitic morphology around the fibres correlate with high interfacial shear strength. In fact somewhat higher strength values were obtained for samples with transcrystalline layers around the fibres. 相似文献
